Atheros wifi with kernel 2.6.30

Now that Puppy is moving from kernel version 2.6.25 to 2.6.30 with the upcoming Puppy 4.3, there appears to be some (extra) confusion about drivers for Atheros wifi devices.

Under the 2.6.25.16 kernel in Puppy v4.1 / v4.2 / v4.3-retro:
- the ath_pci module from the MADWiFi project is provided as standard. It supports most, but not all, G-mode PCI and cardbus wifi devices.
- for the AR5007EG wifi chipset variant, a special version of the ath_pci driver is required, available here -

- the ath5k module is also available, but at this early stage of development it's generally unreliable.
- Atheros N-mode wifi devices are not supported.
- Atheros USB wifi devices are not supported.

Under the 2.6.30.x kernel in Puppy 4.3:
- the ath5k wifi module is now working and reliable. It supports all PCI and cardbus G-mode wifi devices.
- the new ath9k module supports Atheros PCI/cardbus N-mode wifi devices.

EDIT:
- the new ar9170usb module supports Atheros "otus" 802.11n USB devices (but N-mode speeds not yet working).

In the new kernel, cards that formerly used ath_pci'
now use ath5k.

It may take a few runs through the connect wizard to work.

Also I did a frugal install on my EeePC901 but no joy with wifi as there was no rt2860 module? Is this available for the pup43 kernel?

Thanks for your suggestion. pup43b2 found an interface wlan0 with ath5k but despite scanning umpteen times it never found my wpk encrypted router (but found everyone else's in the village!).

So I resorted to ndiswrapper with a 802bg.zip I got from somewhere. (Too big to attach) and have used before successfully. With this the scan found my router first time.

So I am sending this from 43b2 right now.

Thanks for your suggestion. Briefly looking through that thread:

I guess with a new kernel the drivers need to be complied specifically for this? Maybe they are on the forum somewhere but I have not found them. Perhaps there is a ndiswraper solution?

Well if an access point can be found (regardless of whether it's your access point) then the driver is clearly working.
You just need to configure it.

And what configuration tool did you use? Pwireless? Pwireless apparently doesn't support WPA encryption.
You should always try the Network Wizard first.

Scanning might fail because your wifi router isn't broadcasting its SSID ...
but even if the scanning is failing, who cares?!
It's your router, you should know the SSID and passphrase. Just enter these values without scanning.

You just need to configure it. Oddly the scan seems to find non-existent routers that I don't see for example in pup412 (my default OS). Mike

And there's the newer WPA encryption standard which has many variants, the most common being WPA-PSK/TKIP, sometimes referred to as WPA1.
