used IPP for the connection protocol, the samba settings are irrelevant

samba shouldn't hurt, you can leave it enabled

on ubuntu server:

open the admin->printer

on the left pane, there's a "server settings"

make sure "share printers" is checked in right pane

then in left pane under local printers, your printer should be named (mine is "PSC_1600_series"

now on puppy:

open the cups config screen, printers, add printer (http://localhost:631/admin)

use ipp: protocol

and the uri is:

ipp://ip/printers/name

for me that is ipp://192.168.0.102/printers/PSC_1600_series

And for the driver, had to try a couple, and i don't remember exactly which

one, but i think it 's v1.1.x , cause that s what it says on my printer's test

page.

and that was it

test page worked, and page spreadsheet worked.

The only thing, is that when i print, the printer shows, "printing" for 2 to 3 minutes after it printed, before it comes back to ready. But if i m in a hurry, i just push on the "cancel button", and ready comes back.

*********I'd like to thanks gnu-dio for the work. This is an almost exact copy of his explaining on puppy's irc chat.*****************

In my case, I wanted to print from Pena OS (ubuntu) to printers connected to a puppy machine over my network.
The printers showed up as shared on Pena with the correct addressing.
But I had to add my puppy to the Pena hosts file before printing was accomplished. I just added my puppy machines ip address followed by the name shown as the host for the printers.
In my case, it was pc3.

I also did not have to install any drivers for the shared printers in Pena.
