@jakfish
I have the same model. Since woof (meaning uPup, sPup, Puppy4.3beta1 with newer kernel and now Puppy424 beta2) wifi with WPA/TKIP works out of the box for me.

Hi charlie6 thanks for tip.

Perhaps Barry it might be better to start with a setup of resonable contrast and then let people choose fancy ones?

Am hoping to put Puppy on my little acer aspire one (Lovely machine already works with puppy very nicely)
Cheers

Beta 2 is excellent

Follow-up: I'm getting used to the Silver Marble icon theme. I may not choose to use it but I am beginning to like it.

Follow-up: The ALSA wizard problem described below is seen on *all three* of my machines - a circa 2004 P4 laptop, a circa 1999 desktop employing on-board audio and a circa 2004 desktop employing a PCI sound card. I can't be the only one encountering this problem!

4.3 beta2 (424) looks very "professional" indeed. It will go far in conveying Puppy as serious user's OS.

The Silver Marble icon set is attractive but rather nondescript and difficult to see/decipher. My preference would be to go with a Smooth Color set with reduced (<30-50%) color saturation. It would add a little life and some (but not too much) color to the desktop.

Viewnior is terrific - one of few that can replace my fav, Gpicview. I vote that Viewnior be the default viewer.

Code browser looks like a great alternative to Geany. I especially like the "code folding" feature, which would provide Puppy users with a convenient and generic outlining tool - a big plus!

The new kernel is FAST!

ALSA Wizard still does not detect any sound card hardware (as experienced in 423, 423 and 421), despite the sound card being detected and configured during boot. If anyone else is experiencing this, speak now or forever hold your peace.

It's early days, but 424 looks excellent!

I'll try this when the download takes less than the promised 2 hours.

I'm supposed to have an 8Mb download speed which can do 100 Mb in a few minutes, so I'm not sure what's wrong.

Caneri; are you planning to host this?

Hi Nic2109, I had problems with the download of the ISo. It failed twice. What solved it was to pause and restart it (I was using firefox)a number of times and it then down loaded fine although at about 30k average speed.

Downloaded pup424.scsi
Checksums matched
From both a frugal install and a burnt cd, it seems to get stuck at
Loading Drivers needed to access disk drives.

So I have as of yet to see the distro.

Anyone else get the pup424scsi to boot?
Edited post
Boots fine on 900mhx dell with 384 megs ram ata hard drives.
But...
Will get past the above message on my pc with SATA drives.
The old version did.
So what got left out?

ISO download went smoothly as did the Frugal load. I am OK with the silvery-gray but not real fond of the graphic - looks too clownish to me.

4.31Beta2 came right up and recognized the internal nic (Am waiting for a wifi nic in the mail, it uses the Atheros chipset b/g/n - ENGENIUS EMP-8602+S).

This site http://media.myfoxtampabay.com/myfoxhurricane displays well under Seamonkey 2.0Beta but not under 1.1.15 or this 1.1.17 version:

I believe that it, and many others, requires Flash 10, and maybe other plug-ins.

Any recommendations, please?

Meanwhile I will beat on this some more to see what I can break ... it's a gift!

Hi

Got the same problem as jakfish - can't get wifi to go in beta2.

Tried loading what I thought were the correct modules - but no go.

With k2.6.25.16 puppy's, I used tempestuous's (rtl8187se-coffelius0.4-k2.6.25.16.pet). and all worked with my
EeePC 701SD with the earlier celeron M 900MHz processor.

Strangely - all puppy's with later kernels than k2.6.25.16 - would not work with wifi on this machine.

Sadly - even with this latest kernel (which BTW is much faster than anything before) I have the same difficulty.

Mutter / mumble - don't know what to do - is there a something that
needs to be enabled OR is it me being dim. (probably the latter)

Any help and guidance will be gratefully received.

Very best regards - Ray

The new kernel is FAST!
The latest 2.6.31 (RC9) kernel is even faster...much faster:

- Benchmarks on memory tight desktops show performance improvements of up to 50%
- Firefox and Chrome benchmarked show about 20-25% speed improvement
- X desktop responsiveness is doubled under high memory pressure
- Kernel mode setting for ATI videocards brings faster startup and shutdown of the X Server and faster user switching

I'd love to see an experimental build (4.3 Beta3) with this kernel.

Best choice of Kernel : much faster ... next one even faster.

Nice looking icons.

Do you still need /dev/hdxy ?

Can you associate .mp4 and .mkv files to gxine ?

Do you plan to add an option in Package Manager to remove the "invisible packages" ?
It would simplify building derivatives.

And Pet-be-gone has a problem with xdialog.

For eee users, looking over the comments posted about beta2 and my own experience, I think the later kernel isn't much of an option. Hopefully, Barry will have a change of heart and release a final 4.3 version with the 2.6.25.16 kernel.

If not, I could live with running my computer life with beta1. It's stable, precisely because of Barry and others' hard work.

Very Good so far, Thanks, Kal
Ok, I've taken those <corner> tags out.

paulh177 wrote:i've been running 430beta1 frugal since it was released, using the subdir method.
this created a pp4asave-430beta1.2fs file ... did i have finger trouble? I can't remember, I thought this was the filename Puppy created automatically.
whatever, beta1 found it no problem

have created a new subdir with 430beta2 and updated my menu.lst and copied across the old save file(s)

beta2 boots fine but ignores the save files and comes up as if it's a new install.

either i'm being dim (likely) or there's an odd problem (possible)

paul
Rename the old save file from 'pp4asave-430beta1.2fs' to 'pupsave-430beta1.2fs'. Or 'pupsave-anything.2fs'.

rerwin wrote:2. Regarding the background and icon text: With the dark grey background, the black icon labels are difficult or impossible for me to read. I think they should be white, but don't know how to change them. Is there a user-friendly/easy way to change the desktop text color?
If I keep zigbert's background for 4.3final, I could revert the text to white with black outline, as before.

It is easy to set this as you want: right-click on any desktop icon, choose ROX-Filer -> Options.

Hi Barry, thanks for the ALL back, as you say it is a bit slow
in finding all the files in A-Z Also shows the same problem
in moving thro' puppy4 - puppy3 - puppy2. A progress window would
be nice if that helps.

My next one is that IMAGINATION V1.5 opens large than my screen
set res 1024 x 768 and is smaller within 1280 x 1024 also very large
at 800 x 600 - Is it possible to have auto scale thro' the various
res. I wander how it looks on a small screen laptop ?

Re the ALL again it may be faster if I had a FULL install !

Which reminds me, I ran 'modinfo agrmodem' and 'modinfo agrserial' and there are no alias entries. How does this modem ever get automatically loaded for the correct hardware? Or, does it require a person to manual choose it in the BootManager?

Sylvander wrote:Used the Puppy Package Manager to install the dotpuphandler, but I cannot get either:

Captura.pup
Or...
smm1.0.pup

To complete installation.

How about an improved version of smm where you can actually click on URL's within the text of emails and be taken to the webpage using the default web-browser? [Like Mailwasher does]

Captura needs perfecting also [or replaced with a perfected alternative].

p.s. How come 4.3beta2 suddenly had the name 4.2.4?
That had me confused for a time.
Didn't know which iso to download.
I am not supporting .pup packages anymore, and have deliberately made it difficult to install them.
I no longer support the .pup to.pet conversion either.
There are certain issues with dotpups, that I would like to relegate them to history.

veronicathecow wrote:2. There are no links to Gxine for Flac or MP4

Any chance of kernel with SMP and other speeding up type stuff?
Do those Flac and MP4 files have extension .flac and .mp4?

The 2.6.30.5 kernel is configured with SMP support (basic scheduling anyway).
