Seeking a hassle-free wireless adapter

#1 Post by karatepig64 »

I have a llinksys wpc54G V4, and while it can supposedly be made to work, I am sick and tired of messing with linux. Is there any adapter that: A. Will just WORK, without me having to jump through a million flaming hoops, and B. Can be had for relatively cheap?

hi
Important updates 4.2 final:

1. bcm43xx module problem
In 4.2 Final..bcm43xx is still being a problem...for those of you who wants a workaround..just edit /etc/rc.d/MODULESCONFIG (line 33) delete the red word

PREFLIST=' rt2500usb:rt73usb ath5k:ath_pci orinoco_nortel:hostap_plx orinoco_plx:hostap_plx orinoco_tmd:hostap_plx orinoco_pci:hostap_pci bcm43xx:wl b43:wl b43legacy:wl ssb:wl prism54:p54pci r8169:r8101 rtl8187:r8187 '

and reboot, make pup_save file when prompted, when puppy is booted again go to network wizard and bcm43xx won't be loaded
one that's listed & works, & is cheap, US $17.44/offers/freepost [ebay], uses Realtek RTL8187L driver, and has an aerial to boost weak signals!

you still need to configure security settings though....[WPA2 preferably]

Okay, so to get wireless internet, I merely have to:

Buy the adapter
Download the driver
Plug in the adapter
Run the wizard

Is that correct?

I just read if you use the latest ndiswrapper and http://wifi.uevora.pt/drivers/acer/ipn2 ... 2.2005.zip
that your card will work.

Are you specifically looking for a slot-in (PCMCIA or the like) adapter, or will a USB WLAN stick also do?
If so, I can recommend the '54Mbps Wireless USB 2.0 adapter' from Conceptronic.
Cost me around 7 EUR on eBay. Requires no driver installation. Never gave me any trouble.
Just plug up, and set up your network connection by clicking on 'Connect' >> 'Internet by network or wireless LAN' >> run through Puppy's Network wizard (that's a bit tedious but you can't bypass that anyway - matter of one minute / less than 10 clicks if you know what you're doing).
The Conceptronic will be listed as 'Ralink RT2500 USB Wireless LAN'.

Good luck!

I tries ndiswrapper, but it is not available as a PET. I extracted the files, and was then left wondering "now what?" That USB model is sounding pretty good right now....

ndiswrapper is already installed on it I don't believe you need to install it again. It is just a matter of several clicks, goto-> "Menu"-->"setup"-->"Network wizard"-->"Load module"-->"more"-->"use ndiswrapper". Then grab that .inf file from your windows drivers. Follow the instructions and you should be on your way. That's what I do, someone correct me if I missed a step.

Basically.... yes.....

Except the bit about downloading the driver....puppy already has the driver, in most versions, but different versions/derivatives have differing network connection success, as far as I can see from the posts

Perhaps if you post more details about which puppy version, and whether full/frugal install or liveCD....with whichever network/wireless device you are trying...
tempestuous is the specialist on wifi drivers, AFAIK

but you asked for hassle-free & cheap....that's what I gave you

but you will have to use the wizard nonetheless [unless you can use command line in a console???? ]
