Dual boot Puppy 4.2 and Win7 Full hard disk install ????
I just tried the other day to dual boot them...
I first installed Win7 build 7100 and then i tried to install puppy linux...As usually i repeated the same procedures for a full hard disk install as in puppy linux win xp...Only that this time the grub bootloader did not kicked in (Tough is has been installed and it apeares in menu.lst) so i was booted straight into Windows Seven..
When i checked again i have seen that puppy linux has been installed there...It seems that only the Grub bootloader has problems...
Has anybody succeded in doing a dual boot Puppy and win7??
I am asking just to see if it`s only me who has this problem...
Cheers!

Anyone?
I'm considering a new laptop, and I want to be able to dual boot with newer versions of Windows for the things I can't figure out how to do in Puppy. My last laptop purchase was hampered by trying to find one without Vista, and I have buyer's remorse, especially since I overpayed at a rent to own place.

grub4dos setup for vista....it may also apply to win7

at least in the case of vista you have to use bcdedit which is a windows utility to keep it happy.

My neighbor just installed Win 7 Ultimate on a Presario c500.
Good time to test dual boot with Puppy.
Used a 4.1.1 cd, used gparted to shrink Win 7 by
15Gb. Made ext.2 partition.
Ran universal installer, full install, grub files on sda2, grub
on mbr.
Rebooted; grub screen shows Windows sda1, Linux sda2.
Windows ran chdsk, result of resizing probably, restarted
and everything is perfect.
As smooth and simple as a Puppy dual boot can be.

I'm not familiar with a Vista bootup; is this it?

The Win 7 boot is quite nice, a bit more "Macish".
Boots in 32sec. on the neighbors Compaq, compared to 34sec.
for Puppy 4.1.1.
Shuts down faster, if not doing an update.
Much nicer default background. Fighting fish.
Same trash icon as Puppy 4.0>4.1.2

What I meant was is ntldr/boot.ini/ntdetect.com used.
I guess grub is simply calling the windows boot sector on its own partition after the usual fiddling around with drive order and such.
I just wanted to know how grub4dos would be used as since there were changes in vista that needed an alternative approch when booting from the windows menu

Sorry, have never tried grub4dos, lin&win, or other method.
Don't like "fiddling around" and just let the universal
installer do its' own thing.
Except with Mac Leopard where Darwin handles booting of
other os.

My computer is all Linux. I use the GRUB for Linux version like you do.rjbrewer wrote:Sorry, have never tried grub4dos, lin&win, or other method.
My reason for posting is to say the GRUB we are using, the one Puppy is using is a legacy boot manager, frozen in time due to the GRUB developers not working on it, beyond bug fixes if, any.
GRUB4DOS, while based on the same version is under ongoing development and has become very versatile and I think powerful.
GRUB4DOS, unlike GRUB for Linux needs an operating system to run.
Not having an MS OS, if I wanted the features of grub4dos, I'd make a floppy disk and run the boot manager off it.
Nothing more to say, just an - if you are interested post.
