CarPC/ICE front end for puppy/linux

#1 Post by Aitch »

Does anyone have a good linux ICE front end?

Or could anyone explain how to modify puppy [Upup?] to use this?

http://wiki.openice.org/index.php/LinuxICE

info found here

http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/linux/1 ... ghost.html

Sadly there doesn't seem to be a linux port of the amazingly skinnable RoadRunner

http://rrskins.carpcnet.com/skins.htm

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... 7979145542

unless you know better......?

What it's for?: In car VIA 1ghz PC [maybe with touchscreen] music/video playback + mail/messaging/browsing + Satnav, possibly with auto power on/off, must be fast & reliable ; possible future obd2

Have you got a good CarPC front-end?

How about the bling team - fancy a project?

Plenty of potential..... kudos....publicity.....

No way would I go near that, lol Thats basically from what I take an idea about hacking the cars built in navigation unit and replacing it with a linux operating system, Image how many mistakes could be done, so many different cars with different systems. I could be wrong but thats what I quickly read into it. But they did mention a hard drive which most cars don't have.

I'm more interested in a media delivery/navigation setup with a quick interface & probable touchscreen
Not got a vehicle with any computerised engine stuff as I have a mechanically pumped 1.8ltr turbo-diesel [Ford]

thanks anyway

I may just try Jay's MacpupFoxy-E17, or Upup, as I believe there's a *buntu ICE front end, so maybe it can be adapted ~~~?

Still sorting out hardware at the moment - forward planning

Reading the whole site and reading between the lines also, it appears to be someones wish list, not an actual project.
A sort of 'con' to get interest whipped up.

The site claims to be biz and developer based but then doesn't say anything about who!

Site categories are empty!

Forum not much better. Claims to be in beta but not available.

Despite that, I will watch this to see if it really develops.

agree, i try the download link and find nothing but digging few minutes find these
above seem the only download link available... surely they aren't newbie friendly.

Nope, no download.

Last post was Feb 2008 over a year ago.

Earlier iso was 284mb !! Other links are dead.

I suspect from tone of postings this is/was a 'bling' car forum style.

ICE Front ends are nice but also deceiving regarding backend requirements.

What's required :-

Media front end, that is either CarPC drive (HD, DVD whatever) or ICE base with interface input/output.

Sat Nav. Sat receiver, aerial etc and map database (with details for display software) or working system with interface.

Internet. Well where do you start with the problem on move? WiFi only when stationary, mobile phone app. Slow and liable to dropout.

OBD. Interface.
Now that's a can of worms. OBD1 or 2, vehicle ECU capability to output continuous stream of data. Which vehicle manufacturer? Despite claims for standardisation, not all are standard 8)

Bluetooth. Module needed and phone model specific. Again not all bluetooth are equal.

Cost? Variable but quite expensive for just a display.

Never mind a Puppy Linux ICE mod

This is the mod to use if you want to save money AND be green

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOFbsaNeZps

Running your car on Veggie Oil!

I actually did it for a year in a Fiat Uno 1.7 Diesel, it made it go like a rat up a drainpipe. I could burn off hot hatches and "Chav" ridden Novas at the lights. In the end it bent the piston rods it was that powerful, but the car only cost me £150 so I wasnt bothered as I had already saved far more than that on fuel costs. Adding it to preprocessed biodiesel (which you can buy from RIX service stations in the UK) is also a good tip to get around having to mod your engine too much for cold weather.

Ford diesels like yours are also v. good for it, as the engines are so simple. (I used to work in a garage!).

Handy tip in the Mad Max future the banks have destined us for.

There is now ! NGhost for Puppy Linux > 4.1.x

#11 Post by cato2006 »

Hi all,

I have been working on a car pc since Christmas and lurking around the Puppy Linux camp since last November. I wanted to use NGhost for the Carputer but there were no packages.

So I have compiled...
NGhost for Mobile Media Centre
Navit for GPS/Satnav
HFP - Hands Free Phone Console
and for good measure Zsnes ( SNES ) and Stella ( Atari 2600 ) console emulators.

**** Updated 4th Oct 2009 - URL update *******
See here for packages. http://puppylinux.heliohost.org/

To go with these are the associated dependencies like SDL some bluetooth packages, text to speech, GPS Daemon etc.

Some of the dependency packages were cribbed from elsewhere ( some of the Bluze stuff and Xorg in particular ) otherwise 90% is compiled from source. So theres some useful updated libraries there too.

This a fairly chunky collection.

All the stuff I have compiled there is way FAT, I have made no attempt yet to trim anything down, which may be useful if anyone needs the full package for compiling.
When time permits I will push spilt files there.

Hope these may be of use.

Cato dog handler. ( sic )

Hi Cato, thanks for checking back to keep us up to date with your progress.

Now you have selected your packages, to cut the fat you may want to try puppy 4.1.2 cutdown...it is puppy without the applications (a bit like windows!).

You can find it here

Ok, so this is just how I did it. I have a 1993 F150 Extended Cab truck that I have installed Puppy in.

1st if you want a touchscreen, check out you tube. I watched a tutorial there and made my own touchscreen with an old laptop screen and some creative wiring. 12" screen, touch, mounted in the middle of the dash.

2nd, i just took apart an old MMX box and placed the components throughout the vehicle. The drives are in the dash, accessable through the glove box and the mobo and p/s are under the seat. I added a USB port in my dash to connect my 3G internet so that I can basically have my own turn by turn directions, or anything else I want to access online on the road.

Wiring is a bit tricky. There is a few things you can do. Hook it all up to a P/S and hook the P/S to an invertor. Invertors are big bux. A series of voltage reducers from radio shack and a wiring manual for your motherboard can show you how to wire in a 12v computer to a 12v vehicle. A little harder, but way cheaper.

My total cost was less than $200, most of the money going to have the screen mount made. The old MMX is something was left over from school, and everything else you just scrounge for.

There is a GPS program for linux that will give you your gps location based on your IP address, but I haven't found it yet. Seems to be the last peice to my puzzle.

As far as an actual ICE controller, their is a puplet for Megasquirted vehicles and a number of other programs that you can use to actually modify the computer parameters manually, eliminating the need for performance chips. All you'll need are the cables. Genesys carries all cables to fit most cars with a serial or LPT1 plug.
Instead of looking out Windows, I'm playing with my Puppy.

Megasquirt, now there's a cheap and powerful car ECU system.

How do I know, I have one running in my competition car, have done for years, see my www at bottom of post.

However, it is not really meant to alter your car running parameters on the move. Yes, it's perfectly capable of doing that but only should be done like that to tune the car to its optimum state, ONCE. If it's tuned right, you leave it alone.

BUT TunerStudio in Linux has a super display for just watching the parameters, just don't be tempted to change any. It has one click, large parameter jumps available which on the move can destroy an engine in a second.

There are now some linux apps around that put together in one package could make a great display.

There are lots of 'head rest' displays around on s/hand market now which would make a suitable dash display device.

WOW

Hadn't checked for a while
Cato2006, thanks
Looks very promising.....

for those interested, nghost thread:

http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/linuxic ... -beta.html

Hondasid, can you send me some info on getting a laptop screen to work, don't they have inverters?, saw an article about led backlights......can't find it now....

I have bought a mini-ITX mobo, 12v PSU, 2.8ghz p4 & 2 gig ram, still sorting out other hardware

For all you others looking at computer engine management, nice, if I were still racing, but now I'm retired no....my old mechanical diesel will do me fine, using a biodiesel mix for now, until I can set up my own plant, buying at high prices, but I prefer it, environmentally

thanks everyone for the contributions - a worthy puppy project in the making....

yes the screens do use invertors. they have a 12v and 5v input, just wire them in with a component to an add on circuit and it comes on whenever you turn on the vehicle or flip a switch in my case. Wiring was hard, as the wires are very small and i have a nervous disorder that affects my hands. but that was probably the hardest part. just get good wiring diagrams for everything and you should have no problem figuring it out. let me dig around and see if i can't find some of the tutorials, it has been about a year since i did it.

I don't have the engine monitored (yet) but I'm looking for my old program I used to have and then it's only a matter of getting it working in wine and getting the cable from genesys. thanx guys, you've forced me spend more money on my truck on an idea i hadn't previously thought of.

New URL for Nghost

#19 Post by cato2006 »

New Url is

http://puppylinux.heliohost.org/

This was compiled on 4.1.2 but has been tested on 4.2.1 and trialled on 4.3 ,

For some reason on 4.3 it runs in an X window rather than as the desktop, if you kill X, then restart X with nothing but a rxvt shell
(eg X & rxvt ), then run NGhost it runs as intended, full screen no X window frame, other wise fully functional, anyone know why it might do this ?

Thanks.
