Other painless tarball installs

#1 Post by dustypenguin »

Using usr_devx.sfs and the standard compiling commands (./configure (sometimes), make, and make install) I have found some tarballs that install very nicely to puppy. Besides windowmaker covered in a previous post.

bluefish 1.0.4
wmCalClock
hvclock

Other applications that extract into a directory and run with out installing ...
xampp-linux-1.5 (see this though: http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=1669)
egroupware
thunderbird 1.0.7
firefox 1.5

Are there others that should be included in either list?

Thanks, that's excellent. I discovered last night how easy it is to "install" Thunderbird. Which makes me wonder why all Linux applications aren't done the same way.

DOH!

Puppy has made everything so easy for me that I have just about forgotten the basic linux commands. There is a dot in front of the /configure command isn't there :) I must have been stuck in irc or something.

Goes back to the test machine with a grin on his face.
Puppy Linux...
It just works!

Skype quit working in Puppy 1.0.7  When I click on the icon it flashes as though it tried to start but nothing happens.

Try running skype manually through a console box. (Ex:# /root/my-applications/skype-1.2.0.18/skype)

It gave me an error where I was missing libGL.so.1 libraries. If it gives you a similar error, go ahead and download and install the following dotpup. It should fix it if, in fact, that is the error.
