Rox Filer

#1 Post by brymway »

There is a continuing debate over on a solved thread so I thought I might start a new one more on topic. Also as a place to post any customizations you have made to the rox filer. I rarely see any extreme rox appearance changes although they are possible. The stock rox appearance seems so out of place when it comes to bling.

So I'm hoping for all the little changes you've made to the rox filer. And any further debate on the value rox can go here.

I like Rox because it's effective. When I used windows, and then when I used mac, it got to the point where I dreaded using a computer. Mac doesn't really encourage a lot of filing per se as I see it. Everything is usually filed away in the default place that each application provides.

Windows is a little different but they don't want people rooting thru their files either. The tree filer part of windows was what I hated the most so I don't put much value on a tree style filer.

My view of Linux comes from being totally disgusted with everything the other two OS's told me to use. When I finally got rid of our windows machine, I had figured out how to disable all the default applications and was using only applications that I had downloaded for free from the internet. They were much more useful to me.

So when I hear that Puppy should be this or that so that windows users will be more apt to use it, I disagree. I put a very low value on the effectiveness of the other OS's so I'm darn sure not gonna copy it now. I think there are much better ways to do things and Linux allows me to explore and find the application that works best.

The thing is, most people don't know there is something better out there. If people are coming over from windows or mac to find a copy cat system that's easy for them to use, there's hardly any point other than the cost and reliability. I don't think Puppy fills that space. To me, Puppy fills the space in the person who has a windows or mac and thinks, "is this as good as it gets?"

Even diehard Linux users who use the great big bloated things think we're idiots for using a system as a root user. But I may never go to another system strictly for that reason. I wanna be root. It's effective.

So someone who wants to be a Puppy user SHOULD realize that things are different, but they are quite possibly better. But if they're not, then grab another filer and go.

The ease to make a derivative for drawing people to come from the other side should allow someone to make their own Pup and stick in it the public computers and get on with it. Ecomoney, if there is so much wrong with Puppy, I wish you'd use something else or make your OWN derivative that's perfect for your people and then share it with us. But my goodness you whine a lot.

There, does anyone have any customizing bling they'd like to share? :D

I'll continue what I've been saying on other thread.

I'd like rox to look like this:
http://img68.imageshack.us/img68/8155/2 ... 0x1200.png

or

http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/5016/200 ... 0x1200.png

See the toolbar icons? That's what I'd like to change.

Page two and three have two alterations. One is a few pics of MU's different icons and the place to download the set. Another is a .PET that ttuuxxx made up that will change the first four or five icons on the rox toolbar. Has anyone done anything like this and found super simple ways of doing it? Has anyone else made a .PET for these?

G'day,

Spurred to ask a question about Rox which may be helpful in this thread context (if answered, of course).

What is the ROX equivalent to the Windows Click+Shift to select a contiguous range of files? Moving or deleting or copying a range of files within a larger range is a major niggle for me with ROX.

Thanks,
David S.

To replace the default images see
/usr/local/apps/ROX-Filer/images
/usr/local/apps/ROX-Filer/ROX/MIME
(note that while you are in the apps directory you may need to right click and "look inside")

Davids45, you can click and drag to form a box around the files you want to include. It takes a little practice because you can't click on the file and drag to form a box. You have to click between the first file and its neighbor, then drag, to form a box which includes the files you want.

I'd like to see a tree option for Rox which allows one to specify how many layers deep the tree shows. There is a Bash program called "tree" which sort of does what I want, but it only displays in plain text, not rich text (html), and it requires too much fiddling for my taste. :(

Cntrl-left click allows you to click any number of files one at a time, then Cntrl-X deletes them. That's probably not exactly what you want but it's quicker than if you didn't know it.

G'day brymway & Flash,
Thanks for the replies.

Using the Click+Ctrl for individual selection is OK for one or two files but it was the repeated clicking that was driving me up the masonry, hence the request for a Windows Click+Shift equivalent.
In fact, I now install the "worker" file manager pet just to handle my mass deletions (there's a bad pet that puts about 700 erroneous symlinks into / that I need to clear up every time I inadvertantly try to install it).

I'll try Flash's method later to-night at home (but it doesn't sound too simple or fool-proof).

As you would imagine, I use Rox in the non-icon display format to do this mass-selection of files. Words not icons for me. Anyway, often I want to select or sort by date modified but that column's stuck out to the right of the default dialog box and often off my screen. While I've got your attention, can the categories' order be changed so that for me, I could have the file name then the last date modified as the next column displayed?

I think if you put mime type icons in /root/.icons you can then switch them somewhere in rox options or was it in some shared folder where hicolor icons are? When you think of it yes we could make some icon packs for rox toolbar and mime types, those screenshots are great! Maybe start thread in Eyecandy section?

dejan555 if I get any responses to customizing I'll definitely start a new eyecandy thread. But.....

Davids45 I think I see what you're getting at. This might be a job for the terminal. I'm fairly certain that you could do what you're asking with a single command albeit detailed. I use a terminal when I want to delete or move large amounts of identical file types. Would that be an option for you?

OK, now you got me interested in this.
So mime type icons can be changed in rox options but toolbar icons has to be tweaked cause rox uses gtk theme default icons, see this thread:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=43162

Basically, you could create ~/.gtkrc.mine file which overrides default/gtk theme settings, so you place something like this in it:

Code: Select all

pixmap_path "/path/to/icons"

style "normal" {
  stock["gtk-close"] = {{"close-icon.png"}}
  stock["gtk-go-up"] = {{"up-icon.png"}}
  stock["gtk-home"] = {{"home-icon.png"}}
  stock["gtk-refresh"] = {{"refresh-icon.png"}}
  stock["gtk-zoom-in"] = {{"zoom-in-icon.png"}}
  stock["gtk-zoom-fit"] = {{"zoom-fit-icon.png"}}
  stock["gtk-jump-to"] = {{"jump-to-icon.png"}}
  stock["gtk-sort-ascending"] = {{"sort-icon.png"}}
  stock["gtk-help"] = {{"help-icon.png"}}
  stock["rox-show-hidden"] = {{"hidden-icon.png"}}
  stock["rox-show-details"] = {{"details-icon.png"}}
  stock["rox-select"] = {{"select-icon.png"}}
}

widget "*" style "normal"
after editing path to icons folder and icon names restart X or get gtkrefresh binary from thread mentioned and new toolbar icons should apear in rox, this is what i got, see screenshot attached

We could easily make script for changing rox toolbar icons, but we should set some defaults first, like choosing some default path for icons folder, lets say /root/.icons/rox-toolbar/ for example and then we place icon folders in there with symlink to default one /root/.icons/rox-toolbar/default which you can then link to other folders with "rox iconsets"
Each rox iconset folder must have common names for icons, lets take those from example gtkrc file: close-icon.png, home-icon.png etc...
So we don't touch .gtkrc.mine anymore we just leave it as is.

Then it wouldn't be hard to make pets with rox toolbar iconsets and little script which only changes default symlink from one to another with some preview maybe (oh right, we can include preview.png in every iconset folder)

Any thoughts? :)

OK here's my pet for that red theme with some variations, also includes .gtkrc.mine, you can use this as start point for packaging iconsets if you think it's good. What you need to do is make an iconset folder placed in /root/.icons/rox-toolbar/ with 12 icons and a preview file for some possible changer script ;)

close.png
up.png
home.png
bookmarks.png
refresh.png
zoomin.png
zoomout.png
details.png
sort.png
hidden.png
select.png
help.png

preview.png

This is in order how they apear in rox toolbar and yes i know there isn't any "close" button but that's because it's not there by default, see rox options to enable or disable buttons

Cheers, Dejan

EDIT: Oh yes, when you install that pet just go to gtk theme chooser and re-apply your current gtk theme for changes to take effect or restart X server

You can sort by clicking on the column header.

smokey, you can also select only few files that you want to leave, then "invert selection" (right click on eye icon)

Ctrl+Shift alternative?

#17 Post by davids45 »

G'day,

Thanks for the replies about the lack of a Ctrl+Shift option in Rox.

I thought this was such a simple and normal file manager tool that I assumed I had just missed where it was in Rox or how to turn it on, but it looks like it's just not there.

I'll use another file manager like 'worker' when I need to handle a large group of files in a larger number of files. Maybe even Windows' file manager under Wine.

For everything else, Rox is excellent once you get the hang of it.

Gion can be found Here

Rodent can be found Here

The Rodent folder can be found inside the xfce4-icon-theme folder after it's unpacked.
