Weird???? Don't know what is really going on... tried different hardware this morning and get different results...right now back on original box and original x7 and it seems to for the most part be working.... it still will not recognize two similar dongles at a time... I do not understand that.

I can not get it to hang. I am beginning to believe it may have something to do with signal strengths... and the way the driver or kernel or something is processing the weak signals. Or errors? So.. for the moment I give up.

When I get a bit more time or if someone has any other suggestions I will try several versions on different boxes, old and new usb as well as different processors and memory.
Sounds great Minnesota thanks for the help :) looking forward to your results. Oh ya did you try the drivers from tempestuous on page 66?

wireless help

#1002 Post by Minnesota »

NOT sure wireless help or HELP wireless:

Missed the routines by tempestuous. so downloaded the rw driver... which by the way may very well be the problem.. think we have been down that route with one of the versions or another....that is where I started helping.

Anyway.. see the attached... problem I believe.... Do not think new module is being loaded to test.

BY the way Compliments on the improvements. I love the idea, if you close a directory from a stick..it asks for Unloading.. that saves steps...great.. as well as US keyboard etc....keep up making this easier to use.. name of the game if you ask me...

Files search is improved seems fast and works.

Also....thanks to all who mentioned SPACES in a name field... guess I should have know (NO GUESS it is a FACT).. but used to not caring any more on brand x system... I should have guessed.. but first time I had spaces in a directory name. Squeezed them out and pet will now run from directory on stick... da....never to young or old to learn!!!!

One more question: in some versions wasn't there a program to determine what modules were loaded? Not TOP or processes but modules?? Just trying to see what the name of the driver for wireless is loaded? FULL name not the description of simply zd1211 or Zydas in the wizard.. or is that telling me the actual name.. zd1211 which as we said may not be what is needed.

G

YUCK forgot the file.. here it is...

Minnesota;

Same results I show in above post.
Would you check /proc/modules and see if it works; was froze
up for me.

Correct name of chip and manufacturer can be found in system>
pup scan>usb devices.

Example of my dongle on 412 install. (nothing shows on 214x)

Manufacturer=Belkin
Product=USB2.0 WLAN
VendorID=050d ProductID=705c KERNEL-MODULE=zd1211rw

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.

VERY interesting... I will attach the file of what 417 shows if you wish..but my conclusion is similar to yours... first of all TTUUXXX on x7.. if you attempt to open the folder /proc THE COMPUTER FOLDER HANGS.. weird....Therefore it is impossible to get information from that folder....

Pup Scan.. shows the module loaded is indeed zd1211....

In 417 the module loaded is zd1211rw for BOTH OF MY Dongles....

We might be narrowing this down!

vmPuppy 2.14X - Now in Version 7

#1005 Post by playdayz »

The vmPuppy which puts 2.14X into a virtual machine that "plays" in the free VMWare Player is now updated to Version 7. It's for folks who work in Windows but need some Puppy on their Windows desktop to preserve their sanity. It now has a thread of its own.

Tried the zd1211rw steps on 215ce. Exact same results,
including /proc hang up.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.

It looks like the underlying ieee80211 wifi modules failed to load, and this may have something to do with the way that the Puppy 2-series needed to extract modules from the zdrv file ...
so I just repackaged the zd1211rw dotpet with the additional wifi modules included -

Hi tuuxxx,

Sorry about not getting back, but you prompted me to do something I've been meaning to do for ages.

As forum was down I rewired my router network. My system only uses wireless now for out in my garage, otherwise all are connected via cable. :D Big speed increase.

The eth0 works fine, it was just the wireless. As I use windows and 421 for my engine ecu tuning I do not need to go further at the moment. That's not to say I won't try to get wireless working, it will just take a bit longer as i don't need it yet.

Now for some more testing, love the Firefox browser, posting on it now.

Sure no problem, also next to the home button on firefox there's a white/red square if you click that its a wysiwyg editor :)

Thanks tuuxxx, but you won't believe this, it's greyed out.

When i opened the browser it offered an update for xhina so i took it. It's now greyed out.
I tried the preferences but it's not diabled, shows as an add-on but is just not available.

I also have a sound issue. The volume shows 100% the alsa wizard works all way through and plays woof but none of the audio apps produce sound. The zmixer shows 0% volume but will not allow me to alter it.

Its greyed out because you have a forum page open, just open a regular google search page and it should be fine, Sound issues, hmmm my volume is always max also, but I can control the volume with gxine or bmp, My volume has always been either max or off, 2 settings on all of the puppy releases, the only time it actually ever worked the way it should is when I compiled either jack or alsa, I forget which one it was, but it worked properly for about a day until I started working on another version of puppy.

Ah, that explains xhina

Sound does not work at all for me. Controls show up and down volume in Gxine and Beep but no volume at all.

Running the Alsa wizard produces the final 'woof' but after that the sound just does not work.

zmixer is the clue, it shows volumw as 'zero' and will not allow a change.

Missing my music as i "work"

deleted bit about keyboard, looking in wrong place.

Just a guess...untar and put this in /dev then restart x

edit: sorry i meant /dev not /root/dev -- there's no /root/dev :lol:

Ouch and double ouch !

thanks trio, worked, sort of.

Had an X crash when I tried to restart X, it produced an alternating blue and grey screen. Switched off and restarted again.

No need for any input as 'woof' played on its own. However starting the Beep player created volume but a high pitched squeal along with music as well.

Will check settings for now.

Interesting.

Worked whilst playing a track albeit with high pitched whistle.

When I opened zmixer and made first slight alteration to pcm setting it crackled then stopped sound altogether.
Vol control in mixer went to zero again.

Ok, this is a job for ttuuxxx .. I pin point at the right culprit...I took this mixer from 4.2.1 so it maybe not the right one for your mixer ... I don't know where to look for one .. but you are missing /dev/mixer for sure

There was a mixer already there but dated at 2001 which I replaced with the one you gave.

Rob,

If it's there then it's surely not working right ... again..this may be a good start point to track the bug..

I did compile most of the latest alsa drivers, you could try that :) They do need testing :)
