Hope this one is better than V6 And if it isn't we'll have to work on it, lol I put way too much in this one to revert back to V4, This one is based on V5.

OH no... this is not good.....
Very different print install... OK.. followed the instructions.. added my brother 1440 printer... did not show at all... so went up to the top printer... add printer from the printer control screen. ADDED again.. had to type in /dev/lp0 OK... PRINTER WORKED... printer does not show... but if set to default will work..... first TIME with Abiword... took a long time to get it to print. GOOD.... opened Gnumeric... again, bro not shown... tried to print.. NICE window on the new printer manager.. it shows FINISHED... well... NO OUTPUT... Hummmm try again... NO OUTPUT... try to print a second time from abiword... NO PRINT..... we have a problem.
OK.. let us test WIFI.... I have two dongles hooked up.. only one shows... no big deal... both use the same module..... HUMM.... do a scan... description hits 33%... think I said this earlier with x5.... HANGS the computer....
This testing is one of the reasons to have the version on the screen... I have labeled my disks.. but apparently not well enough... so having trouble telling which of the multiple versions I am attempting to boot from....
Well this took a while... I worked back all the way to 214x3... i...
OK... here is what I think is happening.. I can connect to my home network with the internet connection... if I go to WIFI...and it does not see a wireless node right away it hangs the entire computer.. .I confirmed this because I have two lan ports... one is connected to my current LAN.. faster.. if I attempt to connect to the other not connected card.. it HANGS the computer....also explains why I knew x3 worked the other day.. but hung today....
Dinner time.. will retest printer tomorrow.

Its under Ralink as rt61 but no network is recognised or able to load a driver.
Pretty pointless an option to download other wireless drivers when I can't get online anyway
Only check so far, as I prefer to get a connection first on any Puppy. |
Hi Rob did any of the earlier version of 2.14X or 2.14R get you online? and if so which version? Regular wired adsl works for me. Also most people have both options wired/wireless like at my house I have a 4 port wireless/wired router, So the option for wireless drivers would be handy, I would first use the wired connection to download the wireless ones. I'm willing to work this out with you if you have the time.

Hi Minnesota as printing goes, There has been so many upgrades to 2.14X that somethings like printing might get broken, I did compile cups once a while back, but haven't include it yet, I did include the lib for a pdf viewer, gimp for compiling, that way extra drivers would be made for anticipation that a newer Cups will be installed in the future once the backend is finished updating. I'll focus on Printing for 1-2 releases later on, But for now if there are wireless issues, that needs to be fixed first.
Also I included a new program called VanRed under multimedia, its basically a dvdripper, you need to have the space to use it To use VanRed, just place a dvd in the drive and click the menu/multimedia/VanRed and it will find the dvd and ask a couple of simple questions and rip the dvd to a folder. I tried it yesterday and worked really well.
Also PMirrorget is a website downloader by gposil, if you want to download a whole website the use it
I also included the full version with all options filled for Asunder, so now you can convert music cd's to wavpack hybird,flac,ogg,mp3,wav

2.14x7 trial Sub_title: minor thoughts |
|
as an inexperienced puppy user I am a bit embarrassed to post these thoughts b/c they are probably something I am doing wrong but I figured I will add my thoughts just as what I see as really a "non-computer guy". Many of these things feel really small and insignificant but I just notice them and figured I would bring them up.
I am using an older laptop and did a frugal upgrade to 2.14x7 from x5 that I have been using for a few days.
1. this is probably the biggest issue - simple mail freezes my system. I usually use firefox in fullscreen and thought that may have been the issue but I tried "in fullscreen" and "not" and every time it freezes my system and I have to power off manually and reboot. Maybe it is incompatible with one of my other add-ons???
2. My mouse moves sooo fast. I would like to slow it down but cannot get it to change speeds. I tried to use gxset but didn't find that it did anything. How can I slow down my mouse pointer.
3. the lock icon right justifies on my screen no matter where I move it after I reboot
4. this is probably a jwm issue but I cannot minimize firefox in fullscreen mode. it will close and unmaximize but not minimize
5. Upup has an icon changer that I liked. I would like to be able to change the icons on the desktop (I really like the smooth color icons) but am not sure how to do it without the icon changer. I think I could even use puppy-look and download the new icons I just wouldn't know how to set them.
6. I really would like to change the order that my partitions show up on my screen. Right now they show up (hda3 : home : hda4). Is there anyway to get them to show up in order- (home : hda3 : hda4)?
7. B/c I like fullscreen firefox I set my taskbar to autohide. On the desktop on the right side, there is a small dot left after the autohide. REALLY not a big deal but I just always see it and so I thought I would bring it up.
8. Why are there so many CD/DVD ripper/writers? Is there not a single program that can do all those things, make the menu a lot cleaner and still not add much size to the .iso?
9. I am not sure what gpccard is supposed to do but when I click on it I don't see anything happen. I have a pcmcia wireless card slot.
10. I see a lot of forums online talking about how to optimize firefox. Is firefox already optimized or are there really settings that can be changed to make it faster? If so, why not do it in the 2.14x release and already have it done for us inexperienced users.
Thanks again, this already is the best working and fastest OS I have used on my computer. If nothing above is changed I am still going to use this version of puppy as my main OS and I am VERY happy with it. Thank you again so much.

Downloaded and installed (full) on my P3 733/256 test computer.
Installer works fine again.......haven't tested much but every app launches from the icon like it should and FF 3.5.1 still seems really stable.
Wired dsl is working...everything is fine so far.
Ttuuxxx, thanks for all your hard work.
By the way, 2.14x7 uses a lot less resources than 4.20 or 4.21.

Hi what a list, lol
ok here we go,
1.Simple mail works fine for me, it must be a problem with your extra addons, What I suggest is to uninstall all your addons and see if it works fine , If so then you know, and just add one at a time until your system freezes then weigh-up simple mail vs buggy addon.
2.To slow the mouse click menu/Desktop/Jwm Config and click "X-settings, Keyboard, Mouse, Fonts etc" button Then gtkSet will appear and lower the Acelleration under mouse settings, click save, and save it to root, then click apply, and ok, then click ok on the jwm config gui and it should reset x-serer.
3.The lock icon is set in /root/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/ROX-Filer/pb_Default (right clickand select open as text) line <icon x="992" y="32" label="lock">/usr/local/apps/Xlock</icon>
4.JWM issue not 2.14X
5./usr/local/lib/X11/pixmaps <---48x48 icons for the desktop, just replace with other icons and use the same name,
6.you can manually change the hard drive order by editing
root/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/ROX-Filer/pb_Default (right clickand select open as text) line
7 The dot is part of the built in clipboard and can't be fixed, its cut/sel
8. There is a small all in one dvd ripper/cd burner, all the ones included added up would be around 1MB, also most the xfce listinings are just quick links launchers.
9 I made some updates for pcmcia below, install and restart puppy for them to take effect
10 Forget optimizing Firefox, that usually cause a large strain on the servers, like prefetching all links etc, not a real nice thing to. Takes up a lot of extra bandwidth for nothing.

On printing:
Installation of my HP815C printer worked nicely. Printed documents from Firefox, AbiWord and Gnumeric without problems. Printout from Geany looks a bit messed up (font issue ?). Couldn't print pdf's at all, epdfview is lacking a print function, ghostview on the other hand seems to just need an updating of the internal printers list?
I know printing is a bit further down on the to-fix-list, just wanted to report somewhat of a half success .

What partition holds your pup-files?

Glad to be back online again
anyways here's a bunch of upgrades for wireless and pcmcia.
They've all be compiled on 2.14X the only thing that wasn't compiled was pwireless since its a script, That I had to repackage with a new Icon. Since the default package doesn't come with a compatible icon for 2.14X.

Thanks ttuuxxx for another great release, it´s seems the most stable version as far as I can see.
A little thing, you forgot to add the bcm43xx extra firmware files (28 KB pet).
Now, Where are you focusing you attention ttuuxxx?, I imagine you are working in Multimedia apps and updating libs for gxine.
Well I was testing some sfs files but none from ChoicePup is working in Puppy 214x (I think these were made using sfs 4) and I didn´t find many sfs for Puppy 2 series. Where could I found some?. My objective is see how to add more than five sfs files at same time (of course counting the System sfs), for now I could research a way to add more loop devices in Puppy, but I need more sfs files to test them.

Hi Minnesota
I don't use wireless, So really I have no way of testing it, but I do compile and when things compile without error, its usually pretty good to update wireless things. especially when people say there's problems
I'll keep trying, maybe you could lend a hand and try a wizard from another newer series or use the repo etc. Some things won't be compatible due to the kernel versions being used. Hmmmm Barry did release a lot of packages for 2.18 with the older kernel that might be the best bet. If we work on this wireless issue as a group effort I'm sure will whip this issue asap.
Thanks
ttuuxxx

Close I was focusing on ayttm-0.5.0-111-i386.pet lol, I will need some testers for this puppy, I enabled just about everything and its still way smaller and way newer than gaim. It says it can view webcam webcast , etc, this version has a lot more plugins than the default puppy from 4 series, so please give it a good test and if it works well, I'll remove Gaim and replace it
theres are lots of series 2 sfs located at http://puppyisos.org/files/sfs/ (just rename them )

I'm not too clear on what your saying, I just downloaded all the posted pets, including the chat client and they all installed fine on a clean 2.14Xv7 running live. Like I mentioned I don't use wireless but I did manage to start pwireless and ayttm after refreshing the menus, Rutils said error because no wireless network present, well that's true since I don't have wireless. maybe your downloads are messed-up?
