Hi there, you have my sympathy as i had a lot of trouble initially getting wireless to work on my IBM T40P, which has an Atheros 5211 chipset, then out of the blue one day it worked, using just the ath_pci driver!

I'm still puzzled as to what happened, because all i did was run a puplet CD i hadn't tried before, (Flexxxpup 7 Funnynight, based on Puppy 4.2), without modifying any config files or using ndiswrapper or anything at all....i did have to repeat my profile input (WPA) and save it once more, then Voila!, Puppy found the connection and proceeded to get DHCP without a problem. It may be worth repeating the procedure a few times in your case too, i don't know.

If the ath_5k driver module loads on your system, perhaps try unloading/blacklisting it in favour of ath_pci. I know you write here that ath_pci doesn't work but it didn't on mine for months either, for some reason....that might sound odd but it's true :? I've experimented with live CDs for puplets from Puppy 2... -> to 4.2 without wireless connection success until it just worked recently....of course, after the first lucky break, i tried several other random CDs again (mostly 4.1 - 4.2 derivatives) and they mysteriously worked too. It honestly has me stumped what's been going on here but i'm happy as a pig in mud now :D

Something i remember noticing while snooping through the Puppy's file-system is a recent version of mad-wifi, so i'm thinking that perhaps its inclusion is what's made the difference.

If you're still having no joy, i suggest you try the forum threads in Advanced Topics > Hardware > Networking > Wireless, where there's plenty of info and possibly something that applies to your situation...i wish you success with this.

Both of those ACER models have the infamous Atheros AR5007EG wifi chipset, which requires a special variant of the ath_pci (MADWiFi) driver. That's been discussed at length, especially in the forum thread about the Aspire One puplet here
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=35424

You can get the special ath_pci driver here

I think you're referring to the ath5k driver. It's faulty in the 2.6.25.16 kernel of Puppy 4.1/4.2 (and MacPup).

shutdown

#105 Post by lowpine »

hey, I just installed macopera. It's very responsive on my old laptop, I love it!

But, the system shutdown (poweroff and reboot) seem to hang and don't seem to work on my machine, even after an extended wait. I've not had issues with the latest prod release of puppy or any of the other pups.

My workaround is to 'logout' to the prompt the 'reboot', so I do have the ability to save my settings in the pup file. Just a bit of an inconvience.

Any ideas?

thanks,
steve

Prit and I are proud to release An updated version of Macpup Opera:

Macpup Opera061 is based on Ttuuxxx's 4.2v2 Deeper thought(2.6.25.16), a "no Bling" version of puppylinux 4.2 with all of the current updates. It has dbus 1.2.4 compiled and installed from source and the Enlightenment e17 desktop version 0.16.999.061 compiled and installed from source with the updated version of librsvg 2.26.0 .Opera061 includes lots of the e17 extra modules like Flame,Rain,Snow & Penguins and lots of extra shelf modules like Net,Tclock, Moon. Some of the shelf modules like Cpu and Weather are unstable and may crash. Also included is the Opera 9.64 browser compiled by Ttuuxxx.Gimp 2.4.6 .Xvidcap and Avidemux are included as .pets , Install them if you want .Works with both Xorg and Xvesa video drivers. Runs all the latest e17 themes and backgrounds. There is an option on the exit menu to switch back to jwm, if required. Once again as with all our e17 pups use the exit icon on the desktop to shutdown or reboot.

The system menu options for Power off and reboot work now .But the other options like suspend still do not.The extra modules included are re-compiled for .061 In the next few days I will be releasing exhibit and the edje-editor.

Click on the " i "icon to check ram .And use the Top hat to set up internet connections.Application Menus update by themselves. You can still have a different background on each desktop. And set up the shelves differently on each desktop but this time I set them all up the same.

Thanks to Barry,Mu,Puppyluvr,Whodo , Sneekylinux, CatDude,Ttuuxxx , russoodle and Verdegal37 at E17stuff.org

The .iso is 172 mb. http://www.macpup.org/

Btw ,When you add an app to the ibar, you may need to give it a icon.I have included some extra icons ( both static and animated ) in the extra icons folder in /root .

:D
extra icons folder in /root .
Sweet.... :D

BTW,
I went to put one in /root/.e/enlightenment/icons but it was empty..
Found them in /usr/share/enlightenment/data/icons???
That seems better, not hidden, and in /usr/share where it should be.. did you move the stuff there?
And why is .e still there but empty??

They seem to be getting away from using .e . I think what they are tiring to do is use .e for saving multi users settings. If you put themes or backgrounds in .e they still show up under personal. In /usr/share they are system . But all the modules and icons need to go in /usr /share now or they wont show up at all.

They have done away with the init folder in .e also . You put the boot splashes in themes in .e now.

A new macpup! Great news! I will grab it and test it on a few machines later, and post results here if I find anything interesting. I thought I saw in a previous post that you had resolved the problems with e17's shutdown menu, but I see that the custom shutdown icon is still present, are there still issues there? Thanks again for continuing this excellent project.

You can only shut down or re boot from the e17 menu ,nothing else works in that menu. The macpup exit menu allows for both of those plus exit to prompt , re start x , & change to jwm. IMO its much easier to use the icon on the ibar than to go through the menu. But now you have a choice to use which ever you want.

new theme

#120 Post by runtt21 »

I love to get e17 theme and backgrounds from http://www.e17-stuff.org/

One of the main theme makers there is a verdegal37 . I have used several of his backgrounds and the blue2 theme that macpup opera and opera061 uses is based on his A-Illumine-Blue 1.0 theme. Several days ago He joined our forum over at http://hardkap.net/forums/ And He has made a custom Theme for Macpup opera .He has also made us a really cool logo. Please check them out !!!!
