PupFF is Puppy's own frontend to FFmpeg...get all the guff here.

You can get the source code here if you want.

1.7 MB or something not including ffmpeg.
Does it need the special ffmpeg?
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

It only requires the ffmpeg file if you don't have a working FFmpeg...PupFF is a re-write of WinFF for Puppy Linux

Typically, Winff/Pupff is used to take one video/audio format and convert it into another. It is very useful for watching video on portable players which are very very format fussy. For example, I might download an MP4 file from TED Talks to watch on my Walkman, which also uses MP4, but before I can watch it, I have to re-format it to something my Walkman can handle. Ffmpeg does the work, but the command line is long and awkward. What Pupff does is store these command lines as Presets to make the whole thing much easier. With luck, the preset you need will already have been figured out and will be on the list included with the program. If not, you will have to search for it, but I seem to remember Winff has its own forum somewhere which helps a lot. Winff presets are compatible with Pupff.
Now, with a bit of luck, you can take video with your camcorder, and convert it so you can watch it on your iPod!
BTW, Pupff has a drag and drop interface, so you can just drag the file you want to convert from Rox and drop it on the Pupff window.
When you first run Pupff, you must tell it to use the Puppy terminal. To do this, go to edit>preferences>linux, and edit the 'terminal to run' line to read

Code: Select all

Thanks very much for explaining DaveS...Its like the things then people pay top-dollar for for windows....only to download and find out they are spyware! In this case superb work bringing it to puppy for free :-)

I had been using http://media-convert.com/ to do the same job, but its a pain having to upload/download the files.

2 Questions, currently .3gp from a great many mobile phones is unsupported in puppy (they will play if you open them manually, but without sound). Will extra codecs be needed to convert these? Also is it possible to use this from the rox right-click menu i.e. "right-click>convert to another format..."

Thanks Rob,

Question 1. I have only tried .3gp from my phone and that works...so i'll have to investigate that further

Question 2. Yes, a Rox context menu choice is on the drawing board now, i'm working on it...among other things...

Goodness me - or words to that effect!

You need Javascript just to see the page from your web link.

Any way to see it by safe surfers who do not employ javascript unless they have to?

That's cool. I tried in the past to get WinFF working in Puppy in the past with no luck. Thanks for this. :D

Being new to file conversions, I like PupFF.

Does anyone have a tip on converting a 477mb h264 mpeg4
file to a format I can burn to vcd?

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.
Full installs

Pburn should convert your movie, and burn a proper vcd.
Just add file to burnlist and choose 'burn video'.

Thanks, but whenever I've tried that I get a "Not Valid File Format"
message.

I'm using puppy 412 with pburn2.09; would 2.56 make any
difference.

Probably not... I don't think the vcd code has changed often. It is good to keep up to date with Pburn though.

Is the error message from ffmpeg, vcdimager or cdrecord/wodim?

I know it isn't really pretty but here is a basic gtkdialog version. Since PupFF was taken I am calling it Woo-ff.

WYSIWYG

(except one bonus - I added it to the "open with" directory so you can right click to convert)

(one other bonus - its like 1000 times smaller)

License is public domain - have at it. (its a gtkdialog bash script so the pet is also the source)

This is a really interesting utility Technosaurus. I took a look at the script, and it looks like it will convert one video format to another, leaving pretty much everything else alone, which is great. BUT. (There is always a but :))
I download video from the web to use on my Walkman. Like all portable players, it is very fussy over format, esp size. The ffmpeg command line that does it is

Code: Select all

ffmpeg -i "in.mp4" -s 320x180 -aspect 16:9 -b 1250k -ab 80k "out.mp4"
where the file names are in.mp4 and out.mp4
How could I modify the script to use this? Maybe mod the ipod command as I dont have an ipod?

If you look at the if then statement that runs ffmpeg, I have it set up to do a quick ipod conversion. Adding another checkbox (or more likely a dropdown combobox) for the walkman would be a fairly trivial cut and paste. Anyhow I will start a new thread and post it when I get home.

Sorry about the thread hijacking. You can turn the plane now.

Hi gposil; Simple Q.. Why doesn`t pupff do x264 ?

Also I`m going to test avimerge to see if it works well.
It would be a very nice addition to pupff for doing vobs.

Also I got "beep" so monitor and speakers arn`t needed.
A perfect audio notice of job completion for pupff...
Having a regular sound notice would be good too.
Maybe an option to enable either one or both of them.

I thought it`d be nice if it was smaller, about 2/3 it`s size.
Put Convert to ... and Device Presets side by side.
And you could put 2 Pass and Deinterlace to the right
of the Aspect Ratio box, above and below each other.
