Been plugging away at it. Based on Puppy 4.2 SMP I'll have it on my server either later today or tommorow. Audacity and Reaper running under Wine. it has Jack, Qjackctl and Wineasio.
Future versions to include Rosegarden and Ardour. I'll let you know when it's ready to download. Let me know what you would like to see included in future versions. Thanks to gposil, and everybody that's been helping me sort things out.
Update: New 2.6.29.1 SMP RT kernel.

Functions sound like Puppy PortaStudio which is never released.

Music lovers will like this one.

I hope this won't be another vaporware.

I'll have this first version up Sunday, I promise. This week I'm going to be working on FFADO and/or FreeBoB to get support for firewire interfaces.

O.K. version 0.11 is up at http://www.agitprop666.com/PuppyLinux.html :D
It's 143 MB.
Test CD ran perfectly for me. I really like Reaper, very intuitive. I normally work with Cubase or Protools.

Many thanks - Reaper is an evaluation version - looks very comprehensive and if it is running from Wine - seems totally seamless in Puppy. :)

Audacity Beta did not load at all, even running from Command line? :?
That too is a wine program? Does not seem to be? . M m m . . . really wanted that to work (just work)

Has anyone else tried it - watch out for the scarey alien - had to change that immediately
Puppy Raspup 8.2Final 8)

Ill have to check out Audacity again and get back to you. Seemed to work here. I'll report back. Reaper is an evaluation copy, but fully functioning with nag screen.

Fixed Audacity by using a Win version running under Wine. Was able to trim a couple of MB by not needing some libs that the Puppy version needed. Should all be working now. DAW-PUP 0.4.3 is uploading now. Should be ready in about and hour. Thanks Lobster for checking out the earlier version.

O.K. had to tweak some thing with Firepup, added some bookmarks and a tabs plugin. DAW-PUP 0.4.4 is up at http://www.agitprop666.com/PuppyLinux.html
Everything seems to be working now.

Excellent, I finally found the thread I was looking for! Dying to see this, having only discovered both Reaper and Puppy recently! Currently downloading!

Let me know how it goes. Currently my audio interface is out of commision,(M-Audio Ozone, poorly supported in Linux), so I haven't been able to do anymore testing.

Sure will.

I did it the hard way on Suse Linux last week, pretty hairy stuff - but I got it working!

Hey maggotspawn, I'm on DAWPup now, please spare me more hours of searching and reading. What steps do I need to take now to start Reaper properly! Thanks in advance!

Click on Jack-Control. Hit settings, pick your sound card and adjust it's settings. Default sound card might work though. You can adjust latency and sample rate. Hit start, if you picked the right sound card it should run with out errors. Then click on Reaper. I just uploaded a slightly tweaked version, but you can adjust yours by selecting Audacity as your sound editor in Reaper preferences. Going to be working on a RT version of the kernel this week.

Aha. I was running one pup on top of another from a previous install. I cleared it out, re-booted started jack with default settings and Reaper worked first time!! Now to scrounge the money off my missus for a proper compatible soundcard with inputs! Did you say therer were issues with M-Audio? That's what I would be going for. Many thanks for your hard work BTW!!

You'll have to set that up in Reaper preferences, under midi. Then when you create a track you select your midi input and output. There's a link to the Reaper page in the browser. They have a user forum.

Midi output

#17 Post by sky king »

Reaper is a bit tricky at first to get MIDI output, but searching and fiddling did get it to work for me. Opening another track and setting effects is what I remember doing. I just started using it, don't know much yet

I had the Puppy version (.sfs file) Audacity working. Not from this distro, but the .sfs file I found. I screwed up my pupsave and lost my Gimp in that, but backed up the Audacity file, so all I have to do is put it back on the flash drive I'm running from.

Just messing around with Audacity, I got my first warning of low RAM in Puppy 4.2 while applying an effect to a song. I'm not sure if I need to increase the size of the pupsave or what to eliminate this. Probably add RAM, huh? The audio files can get pretty big, and then you need double that, I guess, to apply an effect sometimes.

Audacity seems more intuitive to me, Reaper more capable in some ways. This from a novice user. Pretty darn cool programs, especially at the price (free and $50 if you decide to pay).

There's a freeware version of REAPER as well :)

Download it from the Cockos homepage:

http://www.cockos.com/reaper/download-old.php?ver=0x

Version 0.99x - completely free, no nag screens,no limitations. 4 times smaller and much faster under Linux/WINE.

For destructive audio editing and simple recording tasks get Wavosaur instead:

http://www.wavosaur.com/

(also freeware)

Much better than Audacity

Wavosaur is what you really need:

More powerful and more user-friendly than Audacity:

.
I use another larger partition on my 8 & 16 GB USB sticks, or on my HDD to record/store large audio files.
