Should we change rox to other more beautiful ones... ?SOLVED
I just browsing for filemanager that i stumbled this :
http://pcmanfm.sourceforge.net/
not just beautiful it also small
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... _id=613829
even smaller than rox filer
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... ge_id=7131
I thought why don't we use pcmanager so we can reduce space and also improve user experience ?
thank you

i voted 'no', even though i think the pcman looks and sounds good
has it been tested by anyone here?
rox works well, it is a known quantity
also, requirements, does puppy already have these?
* automake >= 1.9
* libgtk2.0-dev >= 2.6
* libglib2.0-dev >= 2.6 (2.10+ is highly recommended)
* libgamin-dev or libfam-dev (libgamin is better)
* libstartup-notification0-dev
* libhal-dev (Required when --enable-hal configure option is used)
* libdbus-1-dev (Required when --enable-hal configure option is used)
* libhal-storage-dev (Required when --enable-hal configure option is used)
if so, good, if not, then that increases the size
i recognize a couple of them, but i'm not good on knowing my libs...

Rox isn't just a filemanager, its also a pinboard, Rox is a Desktop Environment, Theres only about 15 or so different "Desktop Environment" for linux, like Gnome,kde, etc
here's a link, http://xwinman.org/otherdesktops.php
by far Rox is the lightest for what you get out of it, plus its stable as heck.

I'm looking at this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_environment
and i cannot find aewm too
thank you for the slight positif tone of your "nay !" answer, I hope someone will try these on their puplet then.i voted 'no', even though i think the pcman looks and sounds good

Hi there,
ttuuxxx has some good points in his post. We do get plenty of bang for byte out of Rox.
I think MU uses pcmanfm in NYP, but Rox is there. It lokks nice and works well.
Cheers

It's kind of ridiculous to ask people to vote on something they never heard of before they have a chance to try it out.
Can pcman do batch file rename? That's one of the very useful things Rox does that no other file manager can, at least that I know of. And that includes Windows.
If the only reason you want to change is looks, well, count me out.

Voted no as well. I use Pcmanager in Unnamed so I have tried it. It's not that pretty. Something different maybe, but I don't see what's wrong with Rox.

I think some people like the 2 pane file managers... tree on the left and working directory on the right.
I wonder, can Rox be configured to do that?

Rox works well and is lightweight, but is not particulaly "friendly to linux newbies" as it lack a hierarchical "tree view" style navigation. This makes it very difficult for new users coming over from windows to discover the linux filesystem layout. Rox as a desktop environment, with XFE or FileMaker as a file manager would be a much more suitable for Puppies target audience.

* A 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7, with latest service packs
* A Pentium 4/Celeron 1.8GHz or Athlon XP/Sempron 2200+ or desktop/mobile equivalent
* Minimum 1GB system memory
* 15 MB available hard disk space.
* Intel 915 integrated graphics or Nvidia GeForce 6200 or ATI X300 or better with updated drivers
* OpenGL 2.0 driver support required (may require additional drivers available at bumptop.com/drivers)
* Internet connection required for activation
hmm, i would guess the answer might be . . .
no?
[wondering why you would even ask]

Back to the topic, I just want to remind that rox is not newbies friendly... I'll show you how :
imagine you were linux neewbie, you write something in abiword and you want to save it into folder called "test" and it is located in sda1 or drive_C.
this is how we do it in pcmanfm : click browse ---> click drive_C ---> folder test is already seen so I count it as just 2 click away... look screenshot
what if we do it in rox ? : browse ---> filesystem --> mnt ---> sda1 ---> folder test is now clickable, so we need 4 click.
beside that we also need to mount the partition first, where using pcmanfm it is not needed !
I heard more about rox can be used to batch rename ???? you can even use bash script to do that : http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/linux- ... files.html

@bugman,
I'm sorry but you miss the point... here i want to save into sda1, not empty directory, if i save into empty directory then I can only access from puppy linux and it also add pup_sav file size isn't ?,
besides if you look closely puppy do has empty directory called my_document, but here I want to save to sda1, to flashdisk or what ever media... and it all very easy with pcmanfm and not rox.
that's the whole problem, pcmanfm is more easy than rox.
maybe i was wrong, maybe it wasn't rox fault, maybe it was hal, maybe it was something else... but the fact remain that problem exist.
