Subject description: Doesn't matter now

Doesn't matter, found this thread http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=28443

Hello all,

I re-phrased and bring alive this thread, because my acer laptop's fan is always on, but still it can reach a critical heat of more than 80 C...I think the fan's speed is not high enough...which led me to a question: Is there a third party module to control fan speed on demand? like I did in this thread for my old IBM laptop

Thanks

I think, not more then a couple of days ago a solution for the fan control was posted.
With the puppysearch link in my sig you may be able to find it.

Do you really want/need fan control?
If the only issue is being able to monitor the fan state with conky, I suggest you do a Google search for "Acer conkyrc", because I suspect that this could be enabled with a modification to conky's configuration.

Or you may need lm-sensors

I think I read somewhere that conky and lm-sensors are related? You need to investigate.

Or if the problem is that your Acer laptop is running hot, I read on the web that you could try to apply a strong vacuum cleaner to your laptop's fan vent. This may clear any blockage.

Who put solved in the thread title?

Sorry Tempestous, I haven't got time to try suggestions yet...

but, yes, the comp is sometimes very hot, reaching more than 80 degreed C and no fan...

It's not about conky displaying the fan state, but about the fan to work normally
as I said above /proc/acpi/fan/ folder is empty

I am thinking that there should be a special driver for this

Thanks

Well my understanding is that Acer fan control is a bios function, completely independent of the operating system.
The various utilities we have been discussing just override the bios control.

I suggest you check your bios.

Edit:
the same thing happen when I boot USB puppy on Lenovo 3000 N100 Celeron

The fan seems to be on at all time, but no speed change with higher cpu temp
