Too many girls, oops, Puppies, Too little time to play with.

#1 Post by puppyiso »

Wow, wow, Woof, woof,

So many I mean too many puppies coming out almost daily.

Namely, diet Puppies, faster puppies, theme puppies, and heavy duty puppies.

I love guns and cars. I love the smell of steel. I love customizing.

I never thought an OS can be this much various. Am I looking at Darwin's evolution theory in realtime? Or seeing mutant X-men movies?

Endless variety of puppies.

I suggest somebody got to sort out, classify, group them. The speed, look, functions should be well displayed for the users.

Just take a look at some of the puppies..

Puppyluvr,
I think I've tried most of your puplets, lets see Buddapup Dingo, Transitions, Buddapup 2.17, and my personal fave Icepup 3.01.

Are you going to update Icepup? For some of my "old" computers, I prefer the 3 series pups.....just seem to run better.

Transitions is pretty cool for those Windows refugees too.

I guess at least 2 of us use your puplets. :) :) :)

I don't think they should be counted if they are just a one-off, never-to-be-updated, never-to-be-developed-further puppy. Look on, for example, the Debian forums. There are threads there about personalising Debian, so that the result is a unique version of the distro, but people just say how they did it- they don't publish the result as a "new" version for everyone to download.

Yes, & perhaps a choice of browser & its suitability to low ram systems & flash/youtube &/or fullscreen etc would be worthwhile, too

:D Hello,
What I meant was that I have made several "one off" Pups for a single user for a specific purpose, some of which have never been posted..
Some have..PupWings as an example
My point is that the Puplets page at .org barely scratches the surface.
Puppy is about having it your way...Whatever way that may be... :D

I do believe that if we separate them into groupings, it would avoid confusion..Once you separate out the "Eye Candy / Desktop Enhancements" group, the confusion would be much reduced..

Here is an idea of some catagories:
1: Desktop Enhancements / Eye Candy, Window Managers, Widgets, Specific Browser based..ect)
2: Special Purpose.. (Art, Astronomy, Ham Radio, A/V Editing..ect.)
3: Native Language..
4: Business / Office
5: Rescue / Security
6: Machine Specific..(Lo Ram, EEPC, Aspire 1, Mac, Difficult Hardware, ect..)

@Ed, Flock is cool, especially because it is "self contained" and runs from its own folder, and meets its own needs, (Flash, dep`s and lib`s, ect..) Not the "speediest" Browser on earth...but very integrated into the "social network" stuff..
I have, off and on, been working on a Flock theme for Puppy, but got so frustrated, I made it for Opera instead.(42k + D/L`s :D )..Maybe someday I`ll look at it again...

Well, once Woof is finalised, you will have 20 000 applications to load with only a mouse-click, so you can just add anything you want- even HAM radio stuff. What might be a problem is un-installing stuff that you don't want. You don't neccessarily need a HAMpup.iso- you just easily add the HAM stuff (and its dependencies) from a repository.

:D Hello,
How about "Build a Pup"..?
You go to the site, and see:

...............BUILD A CUSTOM PUPPY ISO HERE.........
..........FOLLOW THESE STEPS......
..........CHOOSE A BUILD SYSTEM....(ie PUPPY / UNBUTU / DEBIAN / SLACK)
1: SELECT A KERNEL...(DEFAULT TO XXX)
2: SELECT A WINDOW MANAGER...(DEFAULT TO JWM)
3: SELECT A DEFAULT BROWSER...(DEFAULT TO SEAMONKEY)
4: SELECT A PROGRAM PACKAGE ..(DEFAULT TO "BASE PUPPY")
5: NAME YOUR PUPLET...
6: CLICK TO DOWNLOAD YOUR CUSTOM PUPPY LINUX ISO....

90% of the time it could default to one of a few premade iso`s...
Easy enough on a CD/DVD..A base Puppy and a bunch of sfs files..Like unleashed with a GUI...
I could do this locally, but on a website, IDK, too much resources???

puppyluvr,

Are you talking about something like custom NimbleX or build Slax page?

How about a small vending machine dispensing cocktail rewritable puppy CDs with a custom CD cover printed as customer wanted?

You have no bandwidth problem and no server side configuration.

A bunch of mix and match button are all required.

Download from the internet is always free but customization should not be free in order t to cover the CDs and the vending m/c cost.

USB plug in ? People like to pay for something tangible. Even MS had to provide windows in the form of CD to get paid.

I heard DSL had a shop to sell DSL pre installed USB something.

But what I am saying is custom toppings on plain puppy pizza.

The vending box needs a computer programmed to add apps, icons, wallpapers and a cd burner and a printer for making cd cover sticker.

The CD should be rewritable to be able to remaster itself. either small size cd or regular or even DVD.

Hmm... Just day dreaming. I don't want to put an limitation on my freedom of imagination.

Having experienced problems to download all kinds of custom puppies, and considering magazine cover CDs are not easy to negotiate een if it is free. (There are tooooooooooooooo many distros.) a cute(like puppies) small biz card sized kind of novelty item cutom puppy CD can be a steady seller.

Or write a book about customizing puppies. The reader don't have to know anything just follow instructions without reading so many "dispersed" posts in the forum. The book is providing well organized, easy to read charts and drawings.

Are all these some dumb idea? bad taste food for thought?

Maybe..

Well, I only said "vending machine" which stays and vending machines don't ship. :P Hence, no postages.

Anyhow, I meant "daydreaming" Don't take it seriously.

Puppy is freely available to download and so many variants coming out not to mention Alphas, RCs and bug fixes, patches...

Traffic cops needed. (although I don't like cops like most US citizens)

Just drive around New Jersey. Cops like state troopers got nothing to do other than giving out tickets for something like seat belts.

I don't mean that kind of cops. :P

:D Hello,
Consider...
3 Kernels
5 Window Managers
5 Browsers
5 Themes
375 base Puppy ISO`s...
About 38 gb...
The rest in .SFS files..
Total..about 50 gb...
Need a lot of Bandwidth...
But doable????

Or we could just catagorize the existing Puplets......
That oughta cover it.....

Come to think of them, no matter how many different puppies are out there, it all started with Barry's official versions.

If sorted, derivative groups are not too many.

Based on the original iso, people added, replaced and lightened the iso as they pleased.

1. the DELETED : Lots of diet puppies such as PULP, Fatfree, Barebone, one bone puppy etc.

2. the ADDED : Some added virtual box like Vuppy, graphics, videos, sound editing apps like MediaPup, PAW, Puppy studio etc.

3. the REPLACED : Some replaced browsers, looks(icons, wallpaers, themes) or window managers such as Firepup, old puppy version with opera, dillo, Boxpup, Macpup, LXDE, E17.

AND

4. the ORIGINALS : puppies with ground breaking ideas such as ChoicePup, Puppies with SMP, UPup, TurboPup along with other speed up minded puppies

I think all the puppies can be grouped as 4 groups.

As a user not a developer, I like the slim ones which I can add the only things I need to add.

I have not found the perfect sized, beautiful looking, fast and stable one yet. I have to keep an eye on it.

I just hope there will be at least two versions of Woof or UPup.
One is regular sized (about 100MB) and the other is a true barebone (about 30~40MB) waiting to be added as users pleased.

Woof is a puppy build system which means it doesn't have to come with lots of apps. As long as it boots real fast and stable after boot, the rest is up to the user. Developer doesn't have to waste his valuable time for anything other than OS itself.

Tinycore and SliTaz all have the same idea but depositories are poor.
Barry's idea of concentrating OS only and use time tested repositories is truly great idea.

(BUT I don't need 20,000 apps. I use very limited set of tools not more than 20)

If car dealers sell all the cars with full options loaded, there won't be any fun to build as you go.

However songbird sing some very old songs. Four years later, some R&B would be welcome.
