Puppies 4.2-v2 Deeper Thought :) UpDated Version X2 lol
Re: pwget extra connections
Would this not be a problem, as it will be similar to Denial-of-Service attack? I understand this is becoming a problem (multiple download connections) in Puppy's repositories.ttuuxxx wrote:puppy download accelerator = pwget+ 4 extra threads

My mistake I didn't change pwget I changed Axel downloader , The only thing I change with pwget was the fonts and background colour due to WhoDo changing rxvt and it was a resquest at the time to change it, actually might of been by Lobster himself
And changing Axels name is fine because Barry did make the fronend and just called it Axel, which it was based on, and when you open it it still has Axel in the title, Plus most users know what a multithreaded downloader is, but how many know what axel is?? What I changed it to was a better name for users to recognize, I never said it was my own work, and If you open the source up, it will still have Barry's name on it.
SO DOn't try starting something here trapster!.

Re: pwget extra connections
No No No I raised it from 4 to 8 thats it, I first consulted Eric @ puppy linux.ca and made sure it was fine with him first, I then told everyone by releasing notes of it in the forum during the build of 4.2.raffy wrote:Would this not be a problem, as it will be similar to Denial-of-Service attack? Denial-of-Service attacks is explained better by reading
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_attack
Most DOS attacks are like 100 000++ connections by one user starting it.

@ttuxxx: I don't think that FTP would hammer a connection to re-send corrupt packets like a DDoS would. One would just end up with a corrupt file at the client's end. One of the pitfalls in using multiple IPs to ftp GET a file, but that's always a risk in gaining a higher speed transfer than any one IP can handle. (such as bittorrent, which can be very wasteful, to the point where corrupt data exceeds the filesize....ISP forums are full of people whinging about the amount they have downloaded vs the amount they actually think they have downloaded:P

I understand that reading the actual license is a good idea, but failing that (I fail at MS EULA reading for example, there are not enough hours in a day) just bung "modified by sikpuppy" after the orignal author(s) names is enough with any relevant documents attached? Link to source needed? There may be a thread on this forum, but it would be nice to know.
If they don't know what a download accelerator means, then they probably don't need a download accelerator:Pecomoney wrote:Hmmmm.....the users around your area must be pretty computer savvy.Plus most users know what a multithreaded downloader is

I care less about the internal politics at this time since I am new...but what is the policy with Puppy for modifying other's (hopefully GPL or similar) work?trapster wrote:Pwget is (was) Lobsters.

That's a pity, I was hoping you'd found something newThe Pfind replacement I found was Search-Monkey
1. The regular expressions aren't very easy to use (they are powerful though).
2. It doesn't have a lot of the features of Pfind.
3. It seems to crash reasonably often.
It is significantly better than Pfind in a couple of ways, so I use both, depending on the job at hand.
The main deficiency of searchmonkey is that it is designed mainly to search text within files, and doesn't have many file-manager type features. I think the only tip I have is that you can get it to open files in their default program by setting rox as the text editor (Hope I've remembered that right - I'll check when I see my computer next).
A quick hack to make it more useful would be to write a script that pops up a gtkdialog or xmessage or whatever, with a bunch of buttons for actions to perform on files (delete file, trash file, copy file, move file, open with default program, show location, open with... ) and set that as the text editor
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

Isnt that what open source and the GPL is all about? If I write something you're free to use it, fix it, enhance it, or change it, as long as you return you're work back to the community?

Pwget is (was) Lobsters.
You seem free to change other's programs...
Ttuuxxx, a slightly off/on topic question: Could you produce a 'theme' for the Seamonkey suite based on the one you did for 4.2 so that we could always have access to it, and could re-install it after updating Seamonkey? I have no clue how hard that would be to do, so excuse me if it is way too much work

Yes, that is exactly Trapster's point - you just haven't seen the background to that post as it is elsewhereStormson5150 wrote:Isnt that what open source and the GPL is all about? Hi Daves the theme I put together works differently than that say a theme you would downloand and you would add to seamonkey, this is because its not an actual addon, I've ripped apart the default theme and changed it with 5 other themes combined including code pieces from some of them. But it would be possible to do with some simple instructions and a package. I'll work on it, in a day or 2DaveS wrote:Ttuuxxx, a slightly off/on topic question: Could you produce a 'theme' for the Seamonkey suite based on the one you did for 4.2 so that we could always have access to it, and could re-install it after updating Seamonkey? Thanks, but it sounds complex. I updated to 1.1.16, and lost the theme, so reverted. How about that............ prefer the sweet interface over the added security!it would be possible to do with some simple instructions and a package. I'll work on it, in a day or 2

first make a folder and copy your /root/.mozilla folder into it, this contains your default settings and addons like monkey menus, and font settings etc
next copy /usr/lib/seamonkey-1.1.15/chrome folder into it
then install the latest seamonkey and delete /usr/lib/seamonkey-1.1.16/chrome folder
and then recopy /usr/lib/seamonkey-1.1.15/chrome folder back in its place, then every thing should work fine

Greetings,
Thanks very much for Deep Thought V1, it is very nice and I love all the wifi utilities. My wifi works great.
Just a few questions regarding V2
1. will it update my save file or do I have to do a "from scratch" install.
2. are all of the wifi utilities in V1 included in V2?
And just my own vote, I don't mind a extra 3 or 4 meg added to the V2 derivative. I have Deep Thought v1 installed on a one gig pendrive with Openoffice 3 added in and I still have 800meg left free on the drive. I just don't like saving space if it means giving up some proven software. Especially since I have a 4gig and a 8gig pendrive laying around empty.
Fact is I've never seen a Puppy that I considered too big.
thank for your efforts, I will install v2 on one of my other drives.

1. To update my puppy usb install, I just extract the files initrd.gz,
vmlinux, and pup_420.sfs over the old copies. Your save file will not be effected.
2. The same wi-fi utils are there
A question for ttuuxxx:
I have been using puppy for awhile, and most recently these ttuuxxx builds. Are you still planning on updating this build? I like the no bling and the fixes. It serves as a great base for my remasters. I am hoping to get remax working to remove more stuff as well. Thanks for all of the stuff you put out for puppy.

I am attracted to Deeper Thought v2 because it drops the bling, so if there is a thread or tutorial for removing bling from Deep Thought standard I would like to see it. Running Deeper Thought v2 from liveCD I was curious about Clipboard near the system tray. I am not sure what Clipboard does, but I clicked it and it expanded to take up half the panel while moving the speaker icon and connection icon to the center of panel. So there is a huge white bar (Clipboard) occupying the entire right side of panel which seems to be inoperable--cant drag it, cant right-click it--all because i clicked on Clipboard. I was wondering why this program was put here by default, how to use it, and how to remove it.

you left click on the clipboard, I think you clicked on one the settings, I'm running puppy 5 alpha right now so I don't have it on my pc.nubc wrote:I am attracted to Deeper Thought v2 because it drops the bling, so if there is a thread or tutorial for removing bling from Deep Thought standard I would like to see it. But how you use it is simple just copy and paste The default clipboard in puppy is terrible for console, very frustrating, So I compiled Parcellite and installed it by default. If you highlite something and copy it, then press the mouse scroll button and it will paste into a console/terminal. as long as the copied text is highlighted. so usually keep the highlited text window away from the terminal.
To remove the bling was a very long process. Its really embedded into 4.2. Some of the scripts had to reverted back to earlier versions etc.
I'll keep updating this version with each official 4.2 series update.
I don't think puppy 5 will have the the added bling.
