Slaxer_Pup slackware 12.2 SMP kernel boots puppy 4.12

#1 Post by big_bass »

all the action is in the cutting edge posts
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=41298

Slaxer_Pup-412.iso.md5.txt7
d0668f33bc5a2c25c59df8230f152e6a Slaxer_Pup-412.iso

85MB lzm compressed
http://puppylinux.asia/tpp/big_bass/Sla ... up-412.iso

Code: Select all

Code:

puppy
linux

boots from the slackware 12.2 kernel the slackware
config too so more hardware detection
built in

thats like taking the hardware
detection from the oldest linux distro
and joining that to puppys lite base
in non geekery terms
taking the motor from one make car
and placing it in another

you only see it if you lift the hood
nothing removed from the 4.12 base
tweaks added for stability only
full ROX theme I only added this because
I have used it for a long time on my box
and grew fond of it
hope you like it too

412 but as a lzm compressed sfs
saving size off the iso

make sure you dont have an old 4.12
puppy install because the sfs file
is different and will clash
with the slaxer_pup-4.12

just rename or remove any old sfs
or pupsaves start clean
and enjoy

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is Slaxer_Pup?

1.)this is a new concept puppy with a focus on a different hardware detection config and kernel from our old friends at slackware 12.2

since they have been around along time you have a lot of hardware detection experience covering your back

2.)using a solid modern base puppy so you feel at home

could it be possible to join the two ?

yep :D

for those that know my work this is NOT a fatfree version
nothing was removed only more hard ware detection added
so that my focus could be on hardware support

the kernel and initrd.gz does that work for you under the hood

maybe some things wont get detected that gets detected on puppy
maybe somethings that arent detected on puppy get detected on Slaxer_Pup

you'll never know if you don't try

most people just read alot and don't post
but enjoy trying new things

so I encourage you to take a spin and report
your results even if its a "simple this worked on my box"
that would help me advance and help others

it would be even more helpful if you list what new hardware gets detected
what doesnt get detected that got detected in 4.12

Note: everything got detected and works correctly on my box

focus on stability and hardware detection

Just wondered if Slaxer inherited SLAX ability to:
  • load .lzm on the fly
    create an lzm
choose which lzm to load at boot
Check out my [url=https://github.com/technosaurus]github repositories[/url]. I may eventually get around to updating my [url=http://bashismal.blogspot.com]blogspot[/url].

Just wondered if Slaxer inherited SLAX ability to:

I added in click mounting of *lzm
to make that it easy

I have been real busy setting up everything
at first I wrote a drag and drop mount for *lzm
then decided to make it more puppy friendly with just click mounting
so edited the puppy file mount script

there is a lot of things that can easily be added now
if you make a sfs on this Slaxer Pup
it is already compressed "lzm" for you
isnt that cool 8)

that the back end support is now built in :D

now technosaurus
if you want to test some of your sfs ideas or lzm
have fun first ...then report your discoveries

Hi Joe

Is this a different version to the one I already have (re your PM) & got warnings about

If yes, can it be patched or do I need to re-download?

Edit/afterthought: On broadband so I'll do it anyways - no problem

2nd Edit, just read the other Slaxer_Pup 4.12 back in action thread & see answer to my Q
3rd edit to comply with below request, though there's a bit of confusion there about the reason the previous version got a warning from SHS, I think :D

This posted in new version
All Ok so far, though peculiarly it needs 2 tries to get networking/internet connected [again]
Hardware Benchmarks are about the same

Aitch :)

Aitch
Sit Heel Speak

tested and all worked for him
until he swapped out his video cards
I gave him a technical answer to what happened
he doesnt have time to test ATM

but he should clear up that post
when he has time

he is a valuable tester
and it would be better
for him to respond

well Aitch you could edit your post after reading
what happened and the answer I gave Sit Heel Speak
until he has the time to test again

use the latest version
report your results

Hi big_bass

Looking good and feels fast on my 6yr old Acer TravelMate 243LC
laptop with Celeron 2.5Ghz proc. 238mb ram.

Automagically setup mouse and touchpad - very nice.

All the normal stuff (browsing, WP, Ssheet, file management etc) seems to work as normal/expected.

Will try printing and see - will also try on my new EeePc 901A and see if wifi works. Wife has EeePc 701SD - will try that too.

Curious - did you include your whiteout cleaner and your cache cleaner in this version?

If not - no probs - will add them anyway.

MONSTER thanks for doing what you've done here - in theory - should work on mostly anything.

Fantastic stuff - thank you.

Will dig out a few really old clunkers and let you know how it goes.

Very best regards - Ray

Question

#10 Post by puppyiso »

You posted Slaxer_Pup both in Cutting edge and Puppy derivatives.

Considering the cutting edge section is mostly about hardware detection related, I posted my question here where less crowded

I would like to try Slaxer_pup live CD with downloaded lzm packages or modules from Slax.org.

Fortunately, I have found a downloaded copy of Slaxer_pup and saved time downloading.

But after boot, lzm package double click doesn't work.

How should I use the lzm packages?

Hello, big_bass

Right button click shows the menu "set Run Action" grayed.

I even tried shell command and it showed successful mount.

But I still couldn't run any of the file I found in the mounted folder.

Please take a look the screenshots.

Thank you.

puppyiso

you did mount the lzm
your picture shows it

before there was no easy way to mount slax modules for
viewing whats inside them on puppy
so now it is easy

mounting a *.lzm (slax module) is different than booting a *.lzm

here is where I need to clear up some details

slaxer_pup was compressed with lzm and has lzm patched
in the kernel

so the ISO is smaller

slaxer_pup still uses standard *.sfs as the file extension

you could call a pup_412,sfs pup_412.squashfs

but puppy will only work correctly with sfs

but puppy uses *.sfs as its native format
in the boot manager

so what you want to do is just click slax modules and run them
without any modifications

well thats not going to happen just yet but you can carefully build a pet package for testing from the *.lzm contents then when all is working correctly build a sfs

I will write a how to and convert some for you a bit later
I am still working on hardware support

advanced users that use slax and puppy will have a lot of fun
with this this added support but remember its a large step forward

but not a leap

puppyiso thanks for posting
if you have a question someone else has the same question
so its always good to answer questions

I hope that helped a bit

Hello big_bass and all other interested parties.

Lately I've been using three puplets per se. Slaxer-pup, NYP and spup I built from woof-3.1alpha.

NYP is nice, but that's not what I'm here to discuss.

This suggestion might be a little too far ahead ATM, but I think it's worth a mention.

THE ultimate would be the Slaxer-pup kernel dropped into spup. I'm sure this could be done with woof, but I wouldn't have a clue! (Yet  ). This way we would almost have a true Slackware with the speed and versatility of Puppy. Slaxer-pup is great with hardware detection and so far for me has been very stable. OTOH spup has been super-fast and also very stable and it has the advantage of petget drawing straight from the Slackware official or the Slacky.eu repos.

Dunno if you tried woof, but it isn't hard and I'm sure the scripts could be hacked to accommodate the Slackware kernel with the necessary patches.

Just some food for thought!

Cheers, Mick

I tried booting Slaxer on on USB stick but got the dreaded 'pup_412.sfs not found' message. No good reason for this, nothing to do with my menu.lst, just an occasional Puppy 'feature' I think.
Anyways, this was on a 1.7g Dell laptop, so I did another manual frugal install to my steam-powered 300mhz Armada 3500 (CF card in adapter).
This booted up fine of course...
Oh yes, and the point of my post is:
I use a Netgear USB dongle in both machines, that needs ndiswrapper to load the MS drivers.
The networkwizard tells me ndiswrapper cannot be found.
Running modprobe from a console gets the same 'fatal error'.
Any ideas why this should be?

[EDIT] Well the obvious reason is that it just aint there...
I copied a ndiswrapper.ko from ChoicePup and ran depmod, and the module was found. Unfortunately I have the retro version so it doesn't work  , but I've solved it in principle. I think.

Keef

I had the woes with ndiswrapper too. I think it needs to be compiled in the kernel.

As to your netgear usb dongle(s). What version are they? I have a wg111v2 that runs (with tweaks) ok with the rtl8187 module.

Cheers

@ 01micko

Its the WG111T, which I believe has a different chipset (Atheros), and won't work out of the box on Linux as far as I can find out.
Still, there's always wires....

Wires it is then!

I found the best USB dongle to be the TP-link el cheapo! Uses Ralink chipset and sets up and runs fast in all Puppies and puplets. TL-WN321G
