Samsung ML-1710 Printer?

#1 Post by edoc »

Anyone successfully installed a Samsung ML-1710 laser printer in Puppy 4.2?

I tried the driver here:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_print ... ng-ML-1710

It shows up on the CUPS list when I browse to the extracted directory and appears to be accepted but does not successfully result in printing when Test Print is sent.

Which driver did you pick? There is the "gdi" driver which is built-in to Puppy and would only require downloading the PPD file.

If you got the "splix" driver, it requires compiling. There is a PET for it here.

Is gdi a Samsung printer selection or a generic driver?

I did load the splix - it is a rpm which I ran through rpm2pet

I don't see how I may uninstall it.

Wow, that is awesome!

Will that replace the splix I loaded or might I run into conflicts?

I always prefer to do a clean uninstall where possible - to limit the variables.

Perhaps that could be indexed to the printers that it covers so that when a person does a search they find it.

Before I went out to get the splix I loaded I did a search on the Forum on "samsung AND ml-1710" and came up empty.

Or maybe to this:
Here is a link to all the pets and the documentation in one zip file:http://rapidshare.com/files/212245081/C ... atriot.zip

I'm pretty sure your printer has Linux support documentation / drivers on the CD and at the website, but you didn't mention it.

The printer is used from a friend without any docs.

I searched for a driver and found Splix for this printer - but I now understand that I should not have tried to use it.

Now I have to figure out how to uninstall the driver not properly configured for Puppy and install the one that is.

This is why I always try to ask before I do things - seems every time I try to use a manufacturers-Linux or generic-Linux driver or app with Puppy I get in trouble. :(

For my samsung I had to add the rastertosamsung file, can't remember where do a search for raster and you should find the directory.

Hmm trying to add the extension but not alowed on the forum!

Download the driver from samsung and look for the rastertosamsung files.

This PET (link below) is supposed to work but I wanted to know if I needed to remove the Open-Source Printing Splix driver-app first to avoid conflicts and clutter.

I have not found an answer, nor a how-to, for that yet.

Take the original splix download that you converted into a PET and rename it as a .tgz. Unpack it and look at the contents. It probably contains a subfolder with a few filter files and another folder with the PPD's.

Do the same with your new splix PET. You probably won't see much difference. You should be able to install the new PET into your system without problems.
