playdays, thanks, I'll add your code in rc11 :)

Schism, yes, mgamesa_411.sfs is much too small. It should be around 560 MB or more.

tlchost, I think you must start with the bootoption:
puppy pfix=copy

This forces, to load it to Ram, so that the CD can be unmounted.

Jamesbond, exit X (hit CTRL-Alt-Backspace).
Then type:
xwin 1
Now you see a menu to select other desktops.
The panel might crash, if there is a soundcard problem.
It has a mixer, that seems to be buggy.
Workaround:
Edit the configs in /root/.config/lxpanel.
Delete:

Code: Select all

Plugin {
    type = volumealsa
}
I must find a solution for this...

I started compiling Kernel 2.6.29.1, see:
http://puppylinux.com/blog/?viewDetailed=00667

But I use wows config from 2.6.28.5.
I hope I can provide a test iso this weekend.

This might solve the slow network traffic issue reported somewhere?
I am not certain though, that the Ati/Nvidia drivers are ready for this kernel.
In the phoronics forums I have read of issues with Catalyst.
This will take some days to check it.

Using new frugal installation of RC10 with RC10 bugfix. The features I've used are great and I really like it. I have noted a few problems.
Wbar won't load with a desktop that should have wbar. Executing wbar from a console results in "Using /root/.wbar config file. Image not found, Maybe using a relative path?" Not a problem for me since I prefer Cairo which works fine.
Also xsane fails to find my HP 5280 all in one.

Glad to see that you are experimenting with Kernel 2.6.29.1, hope that you'll consider ext4 which I find is fast and very stable in the new Ubuntu Jaunty. Of course, to date, puppy distributions cannot access the ext4 partition, for some reason ext2 is still preferred by puppy.

Ah, I used the old taxi sfs at home, not the bugfixed from school.
I updated the rc10 bugfix to rc10b:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 750#296750

thanks for this hint :!:

Scanner:
NYP includes hpliplite-2.8.12.
You might try hplip 3.9.2, the full pack:

Bugfix RT10b worked. After exploring wbar a little, I may even prefer it to Cairo. I'll let you know if the xsane suggestion works. Really enjoying the variety of pictures used by the screen saver.

Thanks,
Jim

Looking forward to this, Mark!! I'm sure this will solve the slow network copy. Any kernel that I tried above 2.6.28.5 fixes the problem.

Thank you Mark. The "xwin 1" definitely solves the problem for some. The lxpanel crash seems to be intermittent per every boot (but once it's crash it will continue to crash until next reboot). I haven't confirmed whether deleting the volumealsa will fix it permanently ... but I'll keep trying and let you know.

Thanks....

Now I have several new issues with RC10

A. After the initial boot and save to Live-CD, I specify xvesa. After that I use the wizard-wizard for ALSA....The terminal screen flashes quickly, but the alsa setup does not appear.

B. Once I've done the above, the menu bar at the top of the screen is no longer visable.

tlchost

please exit X and run "alsawizard".
Or try it in one in the other desktops.
The LXDE panel has a buggy soundmixer applet, that crashes the panel when alsawizard runs.
I will replace it with Puppys mixer in rc11.

Having seen that NYP uses the 2.6.28.5 kernel, I was curious to see if it solved my problem for not seeing my second sata HDD of my Medion MD8818.

So I downloaded the mini, but have a problem at boot. (loglevel=7 set)
Kernel panic as far as I understand

Should I wait for the kernel 2.6.29.1 to be ready and included?
(with upup-015 kernel 2.6.29.rc7 the second HDD is seen)

How to exit x ?
How to choose one of the other desktops?

Sorry to ask dumb questions.

Thanks

Still no joy.
You may recall, I use the Lin'N'Win method and don't burn a CD/DVD anymore.
I take care, that the correct pup_XXX.sfs is in /mnt/home before I boot.
All NYP files are in a directory NYP-02 and I copied the pup_411.sfs (193MB) to /mnt/home first. I edit the kernel line in menu.list with pfix=nosmp and loglevel=7
If I don't do the latter, I have a black screen.

If you add a kernel parameter in grub, you must not use "pfix=".
Just append "nosmp".

tlchost,

hit CTRL-Alt-Backspace

Then type:
xwin 1
This shows a desktopmenu.

You also can "exit to prompt" or get the "desktopchooser", if you log out from a desktop by the menu.

Ooops forgot about that one.
So I do now with loglevel=7 and nosmp

I get the same msg as with wow's distro: freeing unused kernel memory 376k freed.

pupsave issues

Thanks....

After spending hours setting my system up to boot form a LiveCD and have my save file on a usb drive, I noticed the following problem:

I normally use a usb drive with windows portableapps. My intended use
for Puppy is to be able to boot into Linux and run my portableapps via wine.

In RC10, if I insert my portableapps drive and then remove it after running the windows programs....the system reports multiple errors attempting to write to the savefile on my usb drive that I use solely for the rc10 save files.

It simply will NOT save.

In addition, when I first run the LiveCD and specifiy puppy pfix=copy to force it to load into memory, on subsequent runs it never get copied into RAM.

None of these problems existed with RC3.....I can boot from either the LiveCD or a bootable USB drive, make use of my portableapps and save to the "save" usb drive.

Hopefully there's a solution.

anomaly report on rc10 wine

#359 Post by playdayz »

This is not causing me any problems MU, but it is something odd. When I run winecfg the box is blank that should show what version of windows the wine system is emulating (yes, I know that wine is not an emulator ;-)

If I drop down the menu and choose a version of windows and then Apply and exit then it is still blank the next time I run winecfg. Wine does run the windows programs I use regardless of this.

Looks like a focus issue.
Select a version, then click in the frame above.
Like this the combobox will be unfocussed - the "Windows XP" is no longer coloured.
Now the selected version stays in the combobox, if you click on "apply".
