Problem with universal Installer

#321 Post by iamonsite »

I love this puplet - great work, please let me know where to find all the latest releases as I'm finding it to be my favorite OS.
Anyway - I boot from the CD - I see conky showing both cores.
I install to a thumb drive and use that - I see only one core in conky.
Not sure what to check or configure - as I thought if I had the perfect setup with the CD - I would get that with the universal installer when I used a thumb drive.
It appears as if it's not seeing the second core (so maybe not a conky issue) as the processor utilization is also much higher. I think Im at RC9 (I just installed it yesterday but dont have it in front of me).
If someone can confirm - it's not just me or tell me where I went wrong that would be great.
Also - the introduction (I assume most users would find it here)
http://puppylinux.org/home/screenshots/newyearspup
doesn't list the location where a person can get the latest version.
Beautiful so far, and kudos to you guys for making a jaw dropping OS

iamonsite,

The latest release is 02rc9.
You find the isos and several addons at:
http://puppyisos.org/isos/2009-01-to-06/Newyearspup02/
User: puppy password: linux

-------------
hm, one core... this is the defaultsetting in the universal installer.
I must modify this for rc10.
I updated the rc9 bugfix further up, so that more cores are supported (removed all "nosmp" in /usr/sbin/puppyinstaller).

You can do this for your existing installation:
edit on your usbdrive the file syslinux.cfg.
It has a line to load the kernel, that includes the word "nosmp".
Like:

Code: Select all

default vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 pmedia=usbflash nosmp
Delete this word "nosmp", then save and reboot.

Anyone using java?

#323 Post by playdayz »

Is anyone using java or know something about it. I have it installed in NYP so that the test at java.com says Congratulations You are using the latest version so they think it is there but the sites I need it for don't recognize it. As far as I know I have it enabled in Seamonky and Firefox but it works in neither. I don't particularly like java but the sites I need it for are for work. thanks for any ideas.

No, NYP does not include Java.
There is a pet here:
jre1.6.0_12-jedit-4.3pre16_411.sfs
http://puppyisos.org/isos/2009-01-to-06 ... Midi-Maxi/
user: puppy password: linux

What site does not work for you?
Please give one or two links, so that I can check it.

Dang you are fast Mark. I wasn't clear. I had installed java myself, 1.6u13. I left out that java.com said I had java, plus about:plugins said I had the java plugin in seamonkey. However, the site did not work for me. The problem is that it is a work site and behind a password.

I had already found your sfs java that you recommended. I installed it and now Seamonkey does *not* say that I have the java plugin installed. I put the plugin into /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and I also tried /root/mozilla/ plugins, but Seamonkey is not recognizing it.

I am too frustrated and I ma going to take a break. Thanks as always, larry

Please run Muppy-filer.
Navigate to:
/root/.mozilla/plugins

You should see there a symlink:
libjavaplugin_oji.so

It should not have a red exclamation mark (!).
Is this valid for you?

In seamonkey, I had to:
edit - preferences - Advanced
There check the checkbox for "Enable Java".

Now I can see the 4 animated applets on:
http://www.meine-erste-homepage.com/animacon.php

If this does not work, let me know, then I will try it with a new savefile in NYP micro again.

Java [Solved]

#328 Post by playdayz »

Thanks MU, All of the tests say Java is indeed installed and enabled. The fault must be in the work programs for teaching online classes--they are very windows-centric. Fortunately I can get by without Java. So let's call this one Solved.

I uploaded rc10.

Changes:

all
- added the last bugfixes

micro
- new xorgwizard
- added MU-temperature (comandlinetool to see the temperature of your processor) (not working, use bugfix)
- added acpitool
- added xbacklight
- updated libdrm to 2.4.9
- updated Intel driver to 2.7.0
- added Puppybasic Screensaver with slideshow and OpenGL savers (OpenGL needs mini/midi/maxi).

mini
- updated Opera 9.64
- added vala(svn) , valaide, gtksourceview, libgee, gtkaml, examples in /root/valaide (you need the devx.sfs for them)

midi/maxi
- updated Tcl/Tk to tcl-8.5.6-v1, gnocl to 0.9.92 (will move to mini in rc11)
- added wishdisk CD/DVD burner (not working, use bugfix)(will move to mini in rc11)
- added Java and Jedit
- updated Wine 1.1.19
- added Ati Catalyst 9.4 (9.3 still included for older cards)
- updated Nvidia to 180.44
- included the Taxi sfs with xfwm4 and nice themes/backgrounds.
- added onlinetvrecorder.com decoder (for germans)

Note: MAXI does not fit on a 700 MB CD!
It might work to overburn a 800 MB CD, but I did not try. So you might need a DVD.

For the changes marked as "(not working)" I attach a bugfix.
I found these bugs after I uploaded the isos.

Things I forgot:
- add 4 cores to conky

I just tested midi in virtualbox, so I pray, nothing got broken with setting up the graficsdrivers.

Update:
bugfix rc10c
- conky displays up to 4 cores
- fix so that Ati/Nvidia controlcenters remember settings, see:

I use wine to run Tenebrae, Quake with improved graphics on NYP 7 Eclipse release. I keep XP on my system for games, i took Vista off of my system. I would love to see a new Hurt Me Plenty. I would be one of the first to get it.

Can I help you in any way?

I fear you can't help, as the only thing that keeps me from building a new one, is the lack of time.
Thanks for your offer!

You could however try to use
mgamesa_083.sfs
from hurtmeplenty.
Just click on the iso to mount it.
Then copy mgames_083.sfs to /mnt/home in a frugal installation or running from CD.
Rename it to mgamesa_411.sfs, then add it in the bootmanager.
It contains older libraries, but that should not matter, as the layered filesystem will give it a lower priority than pup_411.sfs.

You will need at least NYP mini, as that has the free DRI drivers required for accelerated OpenGL.
Or midi/maxi for the faster Ati/Nvidia drivers.

I will try, if I can throw out all unneeded, outdated files from mgamesa_083.sfs this week, so that it would become a "proper", slightly smaller addon for NYP.

yes, this method works.
Doomsday requires a small patch, as the libpng12 is different.
I attach it.

I just tested Quake2 and Doomsday.
The screenshots show them running with a Ati HD 4850 using Catalyst 9.4. :)
By default they run fullscreen, I just ran them windowed for the screenshots.

Mark,

Just got the chance to try up NYP. I just finished downloaded rc9 after I saw you message uploading rc10  Anyway I download rc10 and tried it in my Toshiba with ATI card. I chose Catalyst 9.3 as the driver (the latest driver doesn't detect my card).

Booted well (with pfix=ram), but there is one problem - the panel at the bottom and at the top seems to crash shortly after starting. I see the starting up, showing up, and the suddenly they are both gone.
I managed to open a shell via Muppy-Filer, and if I typed "startlxde" inside this terminal, I get the panels again - until I close the terminal.

Wireless is flawless. Conky shows 2 CPU, which is correct. Google Earth works fine. Gimp launches ok.

When RC10 tells me to create a save file, if I tell it to save to the CD,
it refuses to do so....tells me there may note be enough memory or something is using the media.

I have 4 gigs of memory, started Puppy with puppy pfix=ram and used a new DVD.

What have I done wrong?

Hurt Me Plenty

#338 Post by Schism »

I have taken the mgamesa_083.sfs off of my "Hurt Me Plenty" CD. I changed it to mgamesa_411.sfs loaded it in the boot manager. No games show in the menu. Not a big deal but the file won't mount. I did notice the size of the file on my drive to be 317 MB, and the size of the file on the CD to be 578. So clicking on the CD mgamesa_083.sfs mounts it but the only game i can play are the Flash games.

Downloading the Hurt Me Plenty ISO again.

RC10 Testing

#339 Post by playdayz »

Just wanted to say that I used RC10 as an update rather than a clean install which I usually do and so far everything looks A-OK.

There is some cool art on the screensaver; I have found it takes ESC to quit the screensaver, not just moving the mouse or hitting a key.

To get 4 cores to display in Conky I did this in /etc/conky/conky.conf

Code: Select all

CPU 1: ${cpu cpu1}%
${color lightgray}${cpubar cpu1 7,168}$color
${if_existing /proc/acpi/processor/CPU1/info}CPU 2: ${cpu cpu2}%
${color lightgray}${cpubar cpu2 7,168}$color
$endif
${if_existing /proc/acpi/processor/P002/info}CPU 2: ${cpu cpu2}%
${color lightgray}${cpubar cpu2 7,168}$color
$endif
${if_existing /proc/acpi/processor/P003/info}CPU 3: ${cpu cpu3}%
${color lightgray}${cpubar cpu3 7,168}$color
$endif
${if_existing /proc/acpi/processor/P004/info}CPU 4: ${cpu cpu4}%
${color lightgray}${cpubar cpu4 7,168}$color
$endif

I am doing much of my work now in NYP, which is great fun. Thanks again MU.

I attach a utility.
It adds a menu entry "Webcam-viewer" in the multimedia menu.

It is for Mplayer, so you need mini/midi/maxi, not micro.
It will be included in rc11.

It allows to use Mplayer to see the picture from a webcam.
This is different from the old "Muppywebcam", that was for Video4Linux (v4l) 1.

Kernel 2.6.28.5 supports only v4l 2.

Mplayer has problems to detect v4l2 videostrams from webcams, so this pet installs a compatibility library.

This viewer does:
load a compatibility library, so that video4linux2 streams can be used by applications
supporting only video4linux(1) correctly.

Like this Mplayer can be used to display the streams from the webcam drivers for Kernel 2.6.28.5.

Details:
http://hansdegoede.livejournal.com/3636.html

Works for me with a cheap "Genius Videocam Trek", that uses the Kernelmodule sn9c102. The required modules are loaded automaticaly to the kernel, when the cam is attached.
