Qucs 0.0.14 has been compiled with the Asco Optimizer and is available at my site:

The new 0.0.14 version includes coplanar waveguide calculations.
I added an project example for filter optimization along with the previous examples. I tested it on Puppy 3.01 and 4.00.
1) Some notes on compiling qucs this time: I had to compile on 3.01 (with devx_301.sfs) and could not with 4.00. Since Dingo dropped qt3 for qt4 (as was announced), I suspect that caused the ./configure process to end with Cannot find Qt Headers. So I stayed with 3.01 for compiling, no problem. Asco compiled just fine on 4.00; it has no qt3 or qt4 dependency.
2) After you install qucs on 4.00 and run it, you may get the warning message:
/usr/local/bin/qucsator: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: no version information available (required by /usr/local/bin/qucsator).
It doesn't seem to affect the simulations or optimizations any.
Any Thoughts? Let us know.

1) The warning message does not occur when I just install qt-3.3.8.pet / reboot/ install qucs-0.0.14-i486.pet. It occurs if I had tried to compile qucs using devx_400 previously on that partition.
So no real problem here.

Qucs?Asco RF Microwave
Qucs with Asco is intended for nodal analysis and does not have any E/M capability as such. There are other projects in SourceForge that are addressing E/M. The circuit simulation results I have obtained with Qucs compare very favorably with Agilent ADS, Ansoft Designer and Microwave Office. It may not have as many models as the commercial products, but that does not seem to be a serious issue. It is easy to create your own subcircuit models, and sometimes better in that it forces one to understand the basis of these models rather than just misuse a more sophisticated model, with its built-in default values.
As to Asco, it may be seem slower than some of the commercial products, but it actually converges quicker to a final solution. It is much more sophisticated than the simple random optimization routines. It may take longer to learn, but worthwhile.
A dielectric filter or oscillator would be a good candidate on Qucs. There are no "canned" models for this on Qucs, but using subcircuits, one can be constructed. Then share this example with the rest of the Qucs Sourceforge community, it might get included in the next release if you submit it to the forum moderators. They are very active and open-minded for new ideas.
