jtouso,
I have a couple quick questions/things to try...
What brand/size is your USB device?
Does your device have a write-protect switch that may be set to read only?
Have you used this device on a previous version of Puppy?
Have you tried to reinstall Puppy to the device?

The switch is on write.
I have re-installed 2-3 times, same error

I'm sorry, but this one is beyond me. Hopefully, as the day comes to a close, the smart people will get on here with a real good answer.

Usually, when you get a request for a password when trying to boot Puppy it's because there is a bad pup001 (or equivalent) file on the hard drive. I'm not familiar with using Puppy from pen drives but perhaps the situation is similar. If you boot Puppy from the CD without the pen drive in, then look at the contents of the pen drive with ROX, what do you see?

Same kind of problem here. Here's the files on my USB after attempting to boot:
There shouldn't be a pup001 file on the HD, there isn't the proper partition for it to write to the HD.

Install-to-usb script offers two options to install.
The script states that the second of is now preferred,
there is also a warning that umsdos now not supported.
The script is actually in a transition phase, and option-1 needs
to be removed, as umsdos no longer works.
It appears from your picture of files and folders that you chose
option-1.
Please install again, and choose the preferred option.

I'm just now running through the install script.
When it gets down to asking you to choose option 1 or 2, it states this:
UPDATE: Puppy 1.0.2 uses 2.6 kernel, which does not support umsdos,
hence now can only offer Option 2...
(1.0.3 has 2.4 kernel but umsdos now permanently not supported)
...meaning, choose Option 2 only.

...hey!
i just looked at the install-to-usb script and i have hardwired it to only accept option 2, so option 1 can't even be chosen.
so, how did you install to usb?
you've done it wrong.
Firstly, you should use the script.
If for any reason you can't, you need a correct syslinux.cfg file, containing PSLEEP= and PFILE= parameters.

My syslinux.cfg looks like this:
default vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 initrd=image.gz
append PSLEEP=25 PHOME=sda1 PFILE=pup100-none-262144 PKEYS=us
I used the script to set it up- I´ll do it again, though, and see if it works this time. I´m using a bootfloppy to get my computer to boot from the USB, if that has any relevance.

ah okay, yes, syslinux.cfg looks alright.
It's been awhile since I played with the boot floppy, and I never needed it for booting usb.
So, let's think... it depends on the kind of boot floppy.
if it is using tiny.exe, then the invocation line with tiny.exe will need to have the PSLEEP and PFILE parameters.
since we are using the floppy to boot, not the usb.

Yes- it has tiny.exe on it. I am guessing I´ll have to edit Autoexec.bat- it seems to have 4 or so separate calls to tiny.exe (Looking through drive letters?)- should I change them all to have a ¨PFILE=pup100-none-262144¨ at the end (they already have PSLEEP)? I am very much a newbie to most of this, so bear with me please

Yes, the PFILE parameter is needed.

Ok. Adding that parameter seems to work- it boots.
However, it says it can't find a partition and thus can't save data. I, indeed, don't have a partition set up for linux but shouldn't it be able to save directly to the USB like it can a CD? Or is this not possible yet?

I 'm continuing with the same problem as the screen captures in previous user . Text screen with question about password.
I install Puppy on usb-pen with the script after a live-cd boot and also from windows after extracting the archives with isobuster and copy to usb. Both with the file without .txt (now I can't remember the name)
Help again
