Edupup 2.00 Beta

#1 Post by slapshot »

Edupup 2.0 beta
------------------------------
Hi all,

this is the new Edupup 2.00 Beta. It is still beta but it will work, even if it has minor issues to correct, such as menu voice etc.. which I can do sooner or later.
Of course, it is Puppy based, in particular Puppy 3.01 based, and it is a 140 Mb distro. So it should work with 128 Mb ram but it is better to have also a bit of swap. It should work also with 64 Mb ram and a big swap partition but I'm not sure because I never tried with this configuration.
This is a light version of Edupup. I think it will follow a full version which will be richer from packages point of view but, of course, it will be for newest pc because it will ask bigger hardware resources (I'm thinking to GCompris, Squeak, Exe Learning, Chess games etc..).

Following news of this version:

Packages
-----------------------------
Firefox rather than Seamonkey
MPlayer rather than Xine
GSlapt package manager
Puppy Software Installer By MU
Petget Package manager

Packages for kids
-----------------------------
TuxPuck - Funny and simple hockey table game
TuxMath 1.5.7 - Great game to learn math
TuxType2 1.5.3 - Learning to type the keyboard
TuxPaint 0.9.14 - Paint and fun :-)
TuxPaint-Config 0.0.5
TuxStamps-2004.10.3
ChildsPlay 0.90 - A very good suite of learning games.

Parental control

-----------------------------
I managed to have a parental control to lock the access to adult website by the kids. Firefox has Pro-Con Latte which is working well. The parents can put password, black list etc..
Furthermore I created a new /etc/hosts file preloaded with a black list of bad sites I downloaded from internet. These tools, seems to work well but, of course, they are not foolproofs; it is a parent's task to keep updated the black list and hosts files.
Maybe one day I could offer a similar service to automate it via internet. Right now it is just early.

Look and feel

-----------------------------
New icons
New wallpaper
New theme Noia 2.0 for Firefox even if it is not starting by default but it is a user task to select it from Tools - AddOn menu. I was not able to understand what it the file firefox use to keep this setting. If someone knows it, please, let me know.

Where is ...
-----------------------------
Previous Edupup 1.1 had following software here are not:
Supertux - I chose not to install Supertux because it is too ... addictive for the kids ;) (thanks to Ecomoney for this suggest ;) ). But if you like it you can easily install it via Puppy Software Installer (Start - Setup)
Gcompris - It is now a 8.4.2 version and I have to say it is really wonderful. There is a package I recompiled on Puppy and some libraries to download always from www.edupup.org it miss other libraries to work well. It is big so I preferred to keep it out from this light iso and put it in full version I will develop soon (I hope so ! ).

Installed Libraries
-----------------------------
libSDL1.2-for_doom
sdl_pango-0.1.2-i486-1sl
Python-2.5.1
... many others needed for some packages.

Forum
-----------------------------
www.edupup.org has also forum section. It is italian/english, so feel free to write english as well.

Paypal Donation
----------------------------
On www.edupup.org there is also a paypal donation. If someone think this distro is useful for kids can support it with a little money donation. Thanks !

@ eckrhodes:
Thank you, I hope I will be able to continue my development and to product the full version.

@ darrelljon:
That libraries have required for TuxMath and TuxType. I think it is just the name Mark gave to that dotpup but I don't think they are libraries developed to run doom. Just they are propaedeutical to run kids game I put. Consider that I removed Supertux from the core of Edupup 2.00 because it is too distracting for the kids so you can bet it is not my intention to install any violent game on Edupup ;-). Again, of course, it is parent's task to keep an eye on their kids about adding softwares.

wrong md5sum?

#8 Post by raffy »

SOS: what's happening - I downloaded from ecomoney's and giovelug's sites and each download has md5sum different from that published. Total size is identical = 146,716,672 bytes. Md5sum:
- ecomoney 21b9b06cd2691cb0998771408f5ffb9f edupup200.iso

Hi Raffy,

- published 30a0195168da76403fdf3eb99b4826f6 edupup200.iso
thanks to download Edupup200. I downloaded the iso from ecomoney and giovelug mirrors but I had a correct md5sum, I mean the third you write 30a0195168da76403fdf3eb99b4826f6 .
I was afraid of such a problem because I don't have a fast upload bandwidth so, sometimes, I had to stop the upload and continuing it in a later moment but this checksum seem to be ok.
Please, can you try to download again and calculate it ? I cannot see the problem here.

Thanks.
Antonio

Yes, there should be no problem, so am just curious why I get different md5sums. Thanks for the quick reply.

Thanks Lobster,

it is a really useful link. My future aims for this distro is to push also against education side. These are just some projects in my mind but, right now and if I don't have some work problems as I had, I hope I can make different versions of Edupup.

Thank you

you can rename the dotpup.
I just gave it that name, as I created my own set of SDL-libraries to get doom working long ago.
As there were other dotpups that did not work for me, I gave it this unique name to avoid confusion.
It includes the SDL libs meanwhile required by many games.

Hi Antonio, long time no see. I am glad you are making good use of the web hosting space for your worthwhile project.

We are lucky here in England that many of the computers the schools throw away are very fast...but just not fast enough to run Windows Vista. I would very much like to trial your new Edupup at our Preschool we look after, but they are so used to gCompris now and would miss it. Let me know when you have your second planned Edupup with gCompris built in also and we would be very happy to test it for you.

Some suggestions...

Have you looked at the Glubble Extention for firefox? This is a way that parents can automate what they want to let their children to look via the internet. It works on a White List system which I think would be much safer. When a child tries to look at a site not on the whitelist, their parents are informed via email, so they can check the site first and either allow or disallow depending on their own standards for their children. You must also think of sites like www.meebo.com, which allow children onto msn and chat

I have used glubble with many families in the area, and they are very happy they can keep control of what their little ones can see. It also works in firefox 2 series which I think is smaller/needs less libraries. There is also Ttuxxx's "firepup" which is a more secure Firefox 1.5 modified to be very light (nearly as light as Seamonkey) which either glubble or your parental control might work with, I have have not tested.

Another thing you might want to think about...a live CD of Edupup with the drivers for accessing NTFS/FAT32 drives removed would be good as it would allow kids to copy their parents on the computers...and mum and dad would be comfortable to know that they could leave the children on their computers without them getting into their files or deleting their windows!!! Perhaps a branded version could be given away with parenting magazines, or childrens cereal?

I am glad you are still working on this Antonio. We will chat on MSN sometime soon.

Rob

P.S.

I am worried from the screenshot of the new beta, that perhaps Warner Brothers America may not like you to use their "Wiley Coyote" wallpaper without their permission. :-(

The Wallpaper. I have just PM'd Slapshot to ask permission to use it. Is it really one of the Disney dogs?.

Raffy did suggest another background i could use.

PS. Slapshot are you still working on Edupup?

Hi Robert, thank you very much for all your suggest that I will try to follow. Right now, I'm a bit stopped with Edupup.
I hope to develop again soon, but my paying work are asking for me so I don't have anymore too time to dedicate Edupup. As for the screenshot, I can remember I found that image on the net and I asked to a russian guy the permission to use it. I never received answer so I used it.
I believe it is not a big issue for Warner Bross; it is just an image for an opensource project downloaded from thousands of people with 0 donations ;), so ... :)

I have just been to the nursery where Edupup + Gcompris is being trialled by 30 pre-schoolers (3-4 year olds)

Tuxpuck - too difficult
Supertux - too far over their heads
Ri-li - same as above. I was being conceted putting that one in as no one had made a pet of it. It was my one and only package contrribution.

Thanks ttuxx.

I noticed some feedback from sidders concerning the various games and how the kids used them. Does anyone else have observations or experience with EduPup that they would like to share?

Greg
