MU, I have tried twice for rc8 and gotten a bad md5sum each time. Are you sure it's right on the server?

Oops, sorry, guess I should have checked the messages first.

Sweeeet. I have been testing rc8 with my video card (ati radeon 3850) so here is some feedback that may or may not be useful.

NYP-RC8 - Driver "radeon" - Default desktop Openbox w/ wbar
Hardinfo reports:
Vender Mesa Project
Renderer Software rasterizer
Version 2.1 Mesa 7.4
Direct Rendering Yes

(1280x1024)
(antinspect = 27 fps without xcompmgr)

->Works with every desktop except Compiz
->Does *not* work with Compiz, white screen, no signal to monitor, sometimes recovers with ctrl-alt-bs, other times must reboot
->Conky does not show on JWM--I have this problem on lxde-pup also--sometimes it shows just until I click on the desktop--I found this discussed in the Conky FAQ's on their site--there are a couple of different ways to start Conky in it's own window just for these incompatibilities--I'll see if I can find it again--this happens with both radeon and gflrx--ah-ha, the problem is between Conky and Rox managing the desktop--Conky does not show when Rox is managing the Desktop (rox -p)

NYP-RC8 - Driver "fglrx" - LXDE-MU-Compiz
Vender ATI Technoligies Inc.
Renderer ATI Radeon HD 3850
Version 2.1.8543 Release
Direct rendering Yes

(antinspecdt = 42 fps with xcompmgr, 47 fps without xcompmgr)
(1280x1024)

-> Catalyst Control Center runs and changes resolution, must Reload Desktop after change in resolution so everything shows, defaults to highest res 1600x1200, instead of Reload Desktop can also logout to Desktop Chooser and back
->Monitor Settings (lxrandr) also works to change resolution
->Compiz is working nicely
->Alt-scroll wheel transparency is working
->JWM - runs well except xcompmgr is not running (which it could because patriot's jwm has a transparency option)
-> Checking all desktops, openbox/cairo bar is cute, clock is nice too, When Icewm taskbar is on top as in Icewm+Wbar, it covers the tops of the topmost icons on the desktop (the rox desktop icons)
-> E17: the Conky background is not "transparent," it still has the same color as on default wallpaper (Think Linux) I have found that Estetroot will set the root background which Conky uses to fake the transparency, but who knows with Enlightenment ;-)
-> All desktops run with fglrx

Other items: Conky on Desktop only shows two cores; Wow's lxde-pup shows 4 cores; he said he wrote a script to do that

Abiword Spellchecker is not working, there is a fix for this, to install "dict-en.oxt" (for English), it is discussed in a forum post somewhere, I'll see if I can find it, also I think ttuuxxx has an Abiword 2.6.3 with numerous fixes

Wine and xcompmgr are incompatible, try to resize a wine window by grabbing corner, badness ;-)

thanks for the detailed feedback :)
JWM was just quickly added, I did not tweak anything yet.
Maybe conky works with a delay.
You might try to modify some settings in /usr/local/Desktopstarters/startjwm.

I will try to solve such issues when I find time.
As Jwm is not in my main focus, I am open for all suggestions/tweaks, that peole provide.

I also will try to take care of the other suggestions, like 4 cores in conky or the spellchecker.
E17: the Conky background is not "transparent," it still has the same color as on default wallpaper (Think Linux) I have found that Estetroot will set the root background which Conky uses to fake the transparency, but who knows with Enlightenment
please look here (at bottom):

user: puppy, password: linux
I found no other solution.

You get 27 fps with radeon and antinspect, as it uses the OpenGL software emulation.
So there is no hardware accelleration.
The HD3850 does not yet have support for 3D hardware acceleration with the radeon driver.
http://www.x.org/wiki/radeon
Status

R100/R200 (Radeon 7000 – Radeon 9250) and R300/R400/R500 (Radeon 9500 – Radeon X1950) class chips
2D: accelerated (EXA), stable
XVideo: accelerated and tear free, stable
3D: accelerated, stable

R600/R700 class chips (Radeon HD 2300 – Radeon HD 4870):
2D: accelerated (EXA), a new feature
XVideo: accelerated and tear free, a new feature
3D: in development mostly behind closed doors
I think compiz works only with hardware accelleration, I also get the white screen (HD4850).
Compiz is active, but software emulation can not handle the way textures are used, so it uses white textures.
You can try to rotate the desktop (use the scrollwheel to cycle through desktops: though everything is white, you slightly can see the "rotate" effect).

Thanks for the explanation Mark. It was very clear. The fglrx proprietary driver seems to be working well for me now.

BTW, Does NYP use the regular devx_411.sfs, or did you just put all the development stuff into NYP?

here is a small bugfix for all versions of NYP02 until rc8.

It fixes, that the desktop-options did not remember settings sometimes.
The reason was, that some Gtk-themes contain definitions, that throw (unimportant) errors.
This confuses Xdialog.

I fixed this now.

**edit: added a template for catalyst.

Patriot fixed an issue similar to this with Conky we had in Pwidgets... he added a new option "own_window_type roxdesktop". I don't know what he did but maybe we could ask him?

I haven't tried nyp yet. Have been loosely following this thread. 4 days off over Easter may give me the time. :)

How do you disable the auto mounting of all partitions? Most of the time I prefer just to mount the one or two that I'm using to prevent unintended changes.

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,
click on "Desktop-options" in the menu, or the icon on the desktop.
There, choose the button:
Widgets, shadows and tools

Now you can uncheck the automount checkbox.

It might require the rc8 bugfix, that I attached in my last message.

Finally got around to making a full install of maxi-rc8 + above patch and it is fantastic. Lots of folks aren't too keen on FULL installations and MU doesn't recommend it, but this one is electric - everyone should try it on an old HD.

There have been a few quirks:
eth0 still shows as eth1
an old copy of GParted must be present because it still exhibits that long detente whilst it scans a non-existent FDD (save some time and insert a blank!).
Where's the desktop weather icon?!
There are some strange rendering issue associated with overlapping icons/icon titles, positioning, etc. for those of us using 800x600. This has always been so, but some distros seem to have an answer?
Opera9.64 / 10alpha !! I use the latter all the time - it's brilliant.
Still some scope for tidying the menus. Linux Firewall occurs in three location, hopefully just pointers, not tripled codings?
Several strange messages, of which 'Error: / is used already, refusing to mount on it!' is the most perplexing.

Later: Got a kernel panic 'unable to mount fs....' after making a few trivial changes and to JWM?

Good grief, Mark - it must be raining over there, too! Responses that quick could seriously interfere with your personal relaxation time...
But thanks.

I have found that the conky config file is /etc/conky/conky.config and the option I used was "own_window_type override" but I will now try the roxdesktop option though I didn't see it on the conky docs.

Anyway, the override option keeps conky onscreen and I haven't seen any ill effects.

I tried the roxdesktop option but conky still diswappeared.

Did that - didn't work! Something else?

I saw some discussion earlier about network settings not being saved. Didn't expect this to be an issue with a FULL installation (never has been) - but it is now! Patch? Which one?

you also must activate desktopicons002.
The weather applet is an extension.

And there is still the gdesklets weather applet, if you have midi or maxi.
Gdesklets then also can be activated in those settings.

like this, Sage (blue dots in screenshot).

Be sure to install the rc8 bugfix, or it might not work:
