Hi greetings from Slitaz

#1 Post by oui »

Hi

I can only send kind greetings from Slitaz as I have now a few time an emachines laptop from acer with AMD64 and it is not possible to use puppy any more.

two reasons:

a/ the power supply shut down or diminue terribly by loading the kernel with the effect that the screen become more and more darker and difficult to read

b/ no keyboard for swiss people (although the swiss keyboard is one of the more polyvalent as people speaks 4 very different languages in swiss land and swiss are spezialised into teatching foreign languages...)

both don't appairs in Slitaz as the Slitaz guru himself is swiss man  , writes with the swiss keyboard himself :D , don't speak english (it is a great advantage for a system author: the foreign languages are always enough being under consideration, a lot of languages in a distro with only 30 Mb as puppy 0.7 !) and the power supply as well as the screen work properly in emachines under slitaz (and other systems like kubuntu 9.04)

there is a 3th reason and a 4th reason: as I did see on the standard screen from 4.2 final (yes I did wait until the parution of 4.2 final, because I will not critise what is already amended)

c/ the long screen of modern laptops deforms the view on circles etc. if the system don't observe this detail and don't offers an adequate resolution. and as the clock on the screen is now a analog glock you always see somewhat deformed

d/ the US keyboard seems not to be the international version able to write accents above vocals (éèàöäüç etc.).

I am really sorry after 4 or 5 years where I was really happy to use puppy and thank Barry and all helpers to have to leave it just at the point where woof puppy would perhaps give me the possibility to load all the needed programs I am using in a self made puppy.

but the hardware conceptors did make the decision...

bye

I am lucky then.
I have no problems with my Belgian keyboard, accented characters and dead key support in any of the puppies and whether I write in Dutch, French or German..

Have a good stay in Slitaz.

I like both. Newer puppy kernels with lzma compression are compatible. Puppy generally has stronger kernels than Slitaz. The very small size and selection of just needed software reminds me of very early puppy.
I find slitaz has a much cleaner boot scripts and very very easy to modify even without tazwok et. al.
I was hoping a slitaz-puppy sfs hybrid could be worked out.

While your over there...any chance you would find out how they manage to hack the windows xp bootloader to (ntldlr) to offer a choice of windows or linux (installed in the same ntfs partition) again...its about time puppy learned another new trick, and open source reclaimed some ground lost to to dubious tactics of the enemy. (master boot record)

Isn't that what Lin'n'Win has always done for Puppy?

Lin4Win has hooked into the bootloader by editing boot.ini....a perilous task for linux newbies who are not used to editing text files. The method I heard about was renaming the ntldlr with the gldr(?) from lin4win, and using that to call the renamed ntldlr?

Most people come to puppy because their windows systems are getting too old/slow, or because their windoze is virused. Im thinking of an install method from the universal installer that will allow them to effectively repair their computer...without reformatting and losing their songs/photos/documents while still leaving them to option of booting into their (probably crippled) xp/2000 installation. Many people fear the penguin because they know if they go wrong they will have to either learn the intricacies of GRUB or face a big repair bill from a computer specialist.

This was mentioned here

Just looking for the post I realise this applies not to slitaz but for tiny core linux!!!

I looked up the multi-boot method in the TCL forum. It's a neat trick with a huge caveat. If you make a mistake with Lin'n'Win, your machine will most likely still boot to Windows. If you make a mistake with the TCL method, you'll end up with a door stop.

Ecomoney - I don't think the problem of linux newbies [=win users?] is that they are not used to editing text files. They [I used to be one, and still am] are using notepad/word every day, instead of leafpad/geany etc. What they are not used to is the [potentially] dangerous editing of boot files, and messing with boot sequence etc.

The method of renaming ntldr/grub is what I do. It's not really another way to dual boot, just to get the grub screen first instead of the black winxp boot screen. The rest is the same as lin'n'win. And you can get the same effect by editing boot.ini to boot grub ['linux'] as default and setting the delay to 0.

But rcrsn51 is right, this is not as safe as the recommended lin'n'win method.

Interesting discussion on which is safest - editing boot.ini or renaming ntldr.

Last week I tried the TCL renaming method on my XP laptop and it worked OK.

It also gave me a certain satisfaction that the boot of my PC is now out of the control of Windows! I have truly reclaimed the PC as mine and it is my perogative to select Windows.

There was also a lot of bumf in the grub4dos readme about changing the name of the grldr (warning against it without running some other utility). After a review I think the problem occurs if you tried to call a renamed grldr from ntldr (like a modified Lin'N'Win) because ntldr will only load the first part of grldr and the name has to be right for grldr to load the second part. If you make grldr into ntldr I guess the MBR loads ALL of it with no problem. Seems so anyway.

My feeling is to leave Lin'N'Win as it is for the manual instructions. However, I would like to try and modify MU's automatic installer and I think the TCL approach will make it easier!

If you do brick your PC following the TCL approach then it is easy enough, (with a Puppy Live CD), to get it back running Windows again - just put ntldr and grldr back to their original names. That makes creating an uninstaller very easy.
