4.2 Deep Thought is out! Very Happy
The friskiness continues . . .

Puppy 4.2 was based and updated from 4.1.2
What an update!

and now . . .

Welcome to the Kennels

I am hoping Warren will continue to provide 4.2.1
(an update patched Deep Thought)
and also he has mentioned a Deep Thought CE
which could be our Kennel Alpha

At the same time two projects are maturing
Pizzasgood has an unleashed Git build system
Barry has a woof Puppy build system . . .

We encourage people to make and release their own puplets
We want them to be part of the kennels
Some puplets are an arrangement of software, with added personal preferences, tweaks etc
Some are so good they become the basis for other Puplets

Your kennel needs you

The story so far . . .
- kennel logo designers contacted, jebaJQ8 agreed to do logo, hope to hear from rastapix also
- wiki page created (soon to move to web site)

Don't forget about the No-Bling version I released, It was the first based on 4.2. A new way of changing it, I mounted the pup_420.sfs. Did all the changes inside of it and then built a iso. That way its clean, Not really remastered more like re-edited Smile

Your continuing contribution will never be forgotten Ttuuxxx
I have added a mention in comments here
http://www.puppylinux.org/
(I am advocating that news and blogs all become comments to Pritish and Raffy who are working on the site)

Without you we would have no 4.2
- or it would be very different.
I hope your efforts continue into the new kennel Very Happy

It seems you may have created 'kennel 1'
We can expect expect more breeds, hybrids, mongrels, waifs, runts
and of course Pedigree Puppy . . .

thats good and all Lobster but I have a small problem with this line
4.3 Deep Thought Slackware build switches to use Git / Woof 4
Thats a no-no Smile You can't mix like that during a within a numbered system thats already started. 4 series uses a different glib, gtk, qt. and a few other core programs that aren't compatible with Slackware 12+, If people used the pet package manager to download from series 4 into a Slackware based puppy 4.3 the system would break depending on what they are installing. A new Slackware puppy could continue the 3 series numbering because If I recall correctly Slackware 12.1+ can use Slackware 12 files without issue. But noway would I suggest 4 series files. The closest other distro that can work with series 4.0+ is Ubuntu Gutsy but thats not part of woof yet and I don't think its on the table either. Probably The Debian/Ubuntu should be 5,6 and Slackware 3,
I'm interested in the Debian one and been working on a default theme for the one I want to build. Spent a few days on it. Since the debian one has Gnome files, I made the theme using ,mostly gnome/tango icons which I recoloured, reshaped some, etc. here's a pic on 4.2 what I think the desktop will look like.
the drive icon colours are as such
blue = unmounted
yellow = swap
green = mounted

Thanks Ttuuxxx, Cool

This is how I understand it:
Unleashed using Git and Woof are two different ways of building Puppy

The next version of Puppy may use Git / Unleashed
or if Woof is stable enough we may move to that

My sense of things is 4.3 can use Git / Unleashed
If we use Woof then we would have to use another distros compiled programs to construct Puppy.

Is that right?
Which do you feel is the preferred system?

I like the Git method but it will be a learning process for a lot of people,
I also like woof, Dpup is the fastest Puppy I've ever used, its faster than even cutdown puppies like fatfree, Firefox 3 acts like Firepup. The base model was around 102MB including gnome parts, Plus around 1/2 the desktop applications weren't working but thats no biggy once I get a working compiler for it. I would like the next version of puppy say 5.0 be based on a stripped down version of Dpup similar to one I'm working, Then compile the applications, I'm talking just about everything. Then we make a puppy 5.0 listing in the puppy 4.2 package manager and upload the new files to ibiblio, I would rather have the dpup package manager as a addon, its buggy/crashes, it takes a log time to get a list of all like 10 000+ packages I guess, and sort them out etc. Dialup users would be lost. Also I wouldn't mind even using MU package manager he had around in 3 series, That one had a update list which I think is essential to all package managers. Also when Installing Debian packages/Ubuntu/Slackware etc they use a lot more dependencies which would blow out our 100MB limit. Dpup also uses dbus etc. Thats why we need to strip it down and start fresh with it.

I do like the Git Idea but if we haven't made a puppy from say series 1.0 -4.2 as fast as Dpup then what chance do we have doing it from scratch in series 5.0? Once I get my base worked-out I'm stripping the petget of its 1-4 repo items and just having it install/uninstall applications until we workout how/if the repo etc is going to work. Lets face it most get the programs they need from the forum.

But I would like to see puppy built from scratch also with the latest backend applications. 4 series has issues with gtk, glib, qt, outdated compiler/base packages etc. Makes it hard to compile newer software like Gimp, the last Gimp people had to supply a new Glib, how risky is that? and still had to hack the sources.

@ttuuxxx

That's an interesting post about upcoming proposed Puppy versions

Take Gimp as an example. OK, you want to compile say the latest version of Gimp in Puppy and that also requires an updated Glibc. Is there anything to stop you including a later Glibc in the devx that comes with every Woof build?

ttuuxxx you mentioned fat free and you know thats my baby
dpup is nice and I wish tronkel luck with that too
which has better package options

you do need to provide some facts for your claims
even if it was just a careless comment

since I dedicated two years non stop building
a base pupplet
I do have some facts

point here are some facts they speak the loudest 486 anyone ?
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=36843&start=60

so for older computers fatree is still a good option

yes, we do need to move on and always strive for something better

Jeff luck on your new project
just stick to the facts please ok

sounds fair?

now shut up and get back to work Very Happy
I finall built an all slackware base
its biggger but Im happy with it

after working with woof and debugging
I just said what the hell and went ....all slackware stripped it a smaller base
100% slackware packages I added the puppy flavor to it
but it is the first 100% build from scratch all packages I did
out side of puppy learned alot fast
and that was my goal
to build with all packages and no
special scripts was easier then I expected

Hi Joe, nothing against fatfree, You've done wonders with it Smile
While I was running Dpup it was very responsive, applications would load a lot quicker, every thing was in a blink. etc. It was like I wasn't using linux, strange enough. I never used debian before and never praised it before either, But I have tried over 60 Linux distros plus tons of puppy versions, and its the fastest thing I've seen. But by no means do I think its better than fatfree or even better for older pc's, maybe it just runs great on newer pc's? have you tried it on any of your hardware at home? how was the results if so.

I'm glad you continued with slackware, Thats always been the my number 1 base, are you going to release the one you made up ?
That memory scrubber program you made, I was wondering if you could add a few things to it? Like when you run it. it wouldl empty/delete ./root/thumbnails, /tmp and /root/.mozilla/default/Cache that way it would be a cleaner, and having it run in the background say once every hr or 2 would be ideal. I was thinking that a good way if possible to run it was to hack the taskbars clock, that way it could be built into it and wouldn't need its own daemon running. Well its just an idea Smile

Have you tried wow's latest puppy? I've tried both on modern hardware and wow's is just as fast (or faster) and much more stable and capable.

No I haven't tried wow's latest, I went from 4.2 construction to dpup. Well stable and capable goes without doubt do to wow's since Dpup is still an early alpha. Wink does FireFox 3 work on wow's at the right speed ?
to test it go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:2
and use the scrollbars and see if they move smoothly or are jittery?

Not only does Firefox 3 pass that test, it passes my javascript crash test and the full screen flash test. It simply never crashes. (and launches the fastest of any pup)

I believe puppy 5 should be a mix of what makes woof great and what makes 4.2 different from whatever version woof is based on.

That'd be a killer, right? to mix the two projects. Also, that way, puppy's focus can remain togheter.

I don't know, that's what i'd do if I were you,.

Cheers!!

Hi Techtype, ok I downloaded, and from what I could tell its very advanced GUI, I hated it with a passion, lol It was to smooth feeling, the taskbar was up at the top where the top of the windows dressing _-x get covered up easily, It was a totally different OS feeling. Felt more like a mac, I could see it it handled my 2 cpus very well, the sound didn't work out of the box but the tv-out via s-video did without using the generic drivers, which is a first Smile all in all, what it needs is to rip out that window manager/panel/file manager replace it with rox, jwm or icewm. Rox is really the key missing feature, give it a full browser, seamonkey, firefox, and a full media player, VLC,Mplayer,Gxine and I read on the release page not to run the alsa config while the window manager is running, so that means fix it so you can Smile and then give me a link. Better yet, I'm sticking with Dpup. atleast I can work my way around it without learning from scratch how to use the system. Wow did an excellent job with it, its just not for this puppy user. I love the updates to the system itself, but not the layout of the GUI.
