Frila,

you also have the problem, that you must run xorgwizard at each startup, right?

So your settings are not saved correctly.
A similar issue was reported in the german board.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=39438

Bendie had chosen "save to partition" when he was asked to save his settings.
The problem was solved, when he chose "save to a file".

Maybe this is the same issue for you?
It might be a driver related issue using the "aufs" driver. Former versions of Puppy used "unionfs" instead, but it had severe bugs.
Barry wrote, that the disadvantage of Aufs is, that under certain conditions, it does not work correct. Maybe saving to a partition is such a condition.

I then should remove the option to save to a partition, as I don't know, how it could be solved correctly.

Alternatively you could try to run Puppy with the option "layerfs=unionfs".
Do you use Grub to boot Puppy?
Or if you boot from a USB-Stick, edit isolinux.cfg like this:
Code:
append initrd=initrd.gz pmedia=cd acpi=force layerfs=unionfs

I can tell you more details, if I know exactly, how you run NYP.
But in general, I would not recommend to go back to unionfs again.
Using a savefile instead of a savepartition is the best solution.

Mark

Hi again!

I have now started from scratch with rc7 from USB.
Followoed setup steps exactly, created new .2fs file (save as file) and rebooted.

Xorgwizard starts again (as earlier)
I deleted some desktop icons and moved around gtk clock, saved network password and added icons to wbar.

Rebooted again.
- Xorgwizard starts... --- not ok
- Desktop icons back --- not ok
- gtk clock in correct place --- ok
- network password still there --- ok
- new wbar icons on correct places --- ok

I can't see that I have made any errors, just followed setup instructions.

A peculiar thing is if I run NYP from the laptop where ATI Catalyst is installed there is no xorgwizard starting after boot up??
But, desktop icons can't be removed...

So, can you draw any conclusions from the above described phenomena?

Btw. I can't do append initrd=initrd.gz pmedia=cd acpi=force layerfs=unionfs.

append does not exist as command and I can't find isolinux.cfg on my stick Sad

Regards,
/Lars-Göran

Is this to say remastering is broken in general?

Still broken: you can not use remastered DVDs for multisession.
After you saved the first session, Puppy hangs at startup at "setting up the layered filesystem". I found no solution yet Sad

I got this error on startup with a remastered cd and have not been able to make a successful remaster--perhaps because of the large filesystem??? Should I be able to remaster to a cd or dvd if I am *not* trying to use multisession (the pup_sav.2fs is on an ext3 formatted hard drive).

thanks.

Appears that way...while you can remaster a LiveDVD....that multi-session DVD will NOT allow you save on the DVD or on a file.

I gave up and created a bootable USB copy of the distro and then made all my additions/changes.

Hopefully the problem will be fixed...Mark's done a nice job with NewYearsPup.

Wonder if there's been any progress?

Puppy 4.2 RC3 has Remaster Express....I wonder if this might solve the problem....or if there is simply a problem in 4.1 that affects all remastering scripts?

I will try remaster express on my own.
This week I will be busy with my final java project, to finish my java course.
The crisis now has affected the IT business, the company where I was offered to work last month, not longer can employ new people.

As I got no job yet, it looks like I will have sufficient time in april then, to look at the remaining issues in NYP.

One thought that occurred to me, as I think Vala has a big future, why not write a beginners book on Vala/Genie -- cover both bases, all examples in both syntaxes alongside each other. You would be able to ride the wave when it comes. A "Vala for Dummies" book would be good.

Just a thought for something you could do that might earn money in the future!

If you did it through an established publisher, you would have many more sales, but you would have to expect at least 6 months solid work. I say this from experience. Basically, you write a chapter, send it to them, they send it back with a million corrections (and you start to get very annoyed with them). I think Sage has some experience in this field too.

Subject description: cannot get dual monitors to work in RC7 using ATI Radeon HD2600

I got my repaired ATI card back and booted the RC7 midi CD, but I cannot get both monitors to work. I still have RC2 on a usb stick and both monitors work fine there. When I run amdcccle on RC7 it only shows a single display and there are no options on the dual display tab.

I played with aticonfig and even replaced xorg.conf with a working Ubuntu version to no avail. Finally, in desperation, I copied over the whole ATI folder from RC2 and now both monitors work! I don't know if this is just a configuration issue, or perhaps an ATI problem.

Allen,
please tell me, what you copied?
Ati drivers are sometimes real headbangers.
New releases can break support for some cards, then they get fixed lateron...
I think of adding 8.12 again as second option.

I also will upgrade 9.2 to 9.3.
This will stay for a while, as it is the last version, that supports "medium aged" cards.
Newer Catalysts just will support newest Ati cards.

Ati drops old cards now, so that they are able, to clean up the buggy fglrx driver "from scratch" (though it has become pretty usable meanwhile, at least for new cards like my 4850 it has really fast and stable 3D support).

To ensure long term support for the older cards, they now provide the developers of the free radeon and radeonhd drivers with more specifications.

However, 9.3 will not receive updates, that make it compatible with new kernels, and especially next Xorg versions.
So there might be an overlapping period, when such cards are neither supported by Catalyst nor by Xorg.

This would mean, we had to provide two versions of NYP 3 or 4, one with xorg 7.4, one with xorg 7.5.
I don't know yet, how I will realize this, it depends on how much time I have.

----------------------------
Talking about time:
today I managed to receive payment for another 2 month course in C#/Microsoft .NET.
It starts right after Java next week.
So I cannot promise, when I can fix the remaster issue, or release the "final" version of NYP02.
Unless the remaster is fixed, I might release more "RC" versions.
These would basically just include some upgrades, like newer Wine, or the second Catalyst driver.

It might look a bit strange, to have so many "rc" versions.
On the other hand, big distros just release stable ones once or twice a year, so I think this is acceptable to stay with "rc".
Like this people stay aware, that some things might not work as expected.

Working with C# also means, I will have a closer look at Mono.
There is a Mono SFS around, but I did not try it in NYP yet.
So if I have bad luck, I must compile my own one.
C# will be, like Java, a language for enterprise development.
To develop tools for Puppy, I prefer Genie, as it needs no huge Virtual machine.
Mark

Sorry to hear about the employment setback, Mark. Don't rule out working in the UK - lower salaries, sometimes difficult contract terms, but there are still opportunities, allegedly. Your command of my language exceeds that of a large number of the locals, too!
BK re. technical writing, editing - no money, endless grief, soaks up all available time. Only masochists need apply. But the feeling when you hold the advance copies in your mitt is priceless. Then there comes remaindering...

I originally copied over the ten files from RC2 in /etc/ati: amdpcsdb, amdpcsdb.default, atiogl.xml, authatieventsd.sh, control, inst_path_default, inst_path_override, logo_mask.xbm.example, logo.xbm.example, and signature.

But I did some more testing today booting the RC7 midi CD with pfix=ram (so it doesn't grab my frugal install save file) and of course I choose the ATI Catalyst option. I find I only have to replace the amdpcsdb.default file and do CTL-ALT-BS, then XWIN to get the multi-display tab to work in the ATI Catalyst Control Center.

The courses sound good--I can't wait for .net under wine in NYPup final Laughing

Allen,
great, thanks for encircling that issue.
I'm not 100% certain which catalyst I had in RC2, might you please post your amdpcsdb.default so that I can use it for the next version?
I have an old one with 674 byte; the current one is 3895 byte.

It seems to contain some hardwarespecific settings, but I don't exactly understand the content.

Mark

you may at least install Mono in wine, type:
winetricks --help

I am not certain, that I will try to run .NET related stuff in Wine.
As a developer, I must test programs on the original system, to get reproducable results for companies/customers.

I now have bought a internal harddrive, to be able to use XP.
I used the "home edition" CD from my old notebook, and installed SP2 and 3.
After installation, I created a backup of sda1 and the bootsector with "dd".
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=12432
I then booted Puppy in wows Virtualbox in NYP.
I copied via ftp ("lampp start" from the xampp.sfs, proftpd) the XP backup to a second virtual harddisk, and restored the XP system from it as described.

In virtualbox, I had to set 2 things:
IO-Acpi must be used, or XP freezes at startup.
And you must assign the MAC adress of your Network card to the virtual one, see:
http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=9697#38158
VII) Windows activation

When I copy then wpa.dbl back from the original XP, I get rid of the re-activation because of the different "hardware".

Finally I installed from the virtualbox menu the guest addons in XP.

Now I can switch to seemless mode in the menu or with CTRL-L.

I attach a screenshot.

btw., I have the impression, that XP starts with native speed in virtual box, and NYP even faster than as native startup.
Especially loading the kernel is much faster Shocked

Yes why not finally be paid for your qualities and exertions ?

I do not know you but you make the impression on me of being a sweet person and therefore life might be hard "in society".

Yet, you might try to find a way to trade your skills ?

(which would be a loss in the forum but it is about you MU, try to figure that out).
