...to continue with my previous post, the firstboot page also says, "Lots of local help is available -- select 'Help' in the menu (see left side of taskbar). The local Help page also has the Release Notes for this version of Puppy -- well worth checking out!"

I'm right now using icewm and there is no "help" area on the menu...

**Edit: perhaps just direct them to the Help icon via this page?

**Edit again:
Also, on the "Release Notes" page, there is an icon issue under "Support." The html refers to the icon picture at /usr/puppy-preference/pixmaps/xchat.png which doesn't exist...it is probably meant to refer to /usr/share/pixmaps/xchat.png

Naaa I tossed that help link out of IceWM way back, it makes the menu taller which is a pain fo small laptops, plus I figured they had to use JWM first to get to Icewm so they probably already seen the help page, link etc.

I wondered about that...that seems logical.

Please also check my next edit about the release page...this thread is going amazingly quick.

~ thanks, ttuuxxx

Hi,
On the last 4.2.0 RC4 :
When you stop Pwidgets 2.0.5 (file - Stop/Start Pwidgets...) there's an error message :
Error loading backdrop image:
Failed to open file '/usr/share/backgrounds/Pwidgets_background'
No such file or directory
Backdrop removed.

In the past series 3 during remasters we had a very similar problem with the backdrop image also.

PostPosted: Mon 23 Mar 2009, 10:44    Post subject: Question about Gxine

Hi,

I have a question about gxine in SeaMonkey....
I'm unable to watch vod on http://www.france5.fr/videos/
When i try to listen http://players.tv-radio.com/radiofrance/playerfranceinter.php a gxine window open...
But if i upgrade gxine to version v0.5.11 and install the xine plugin from official puppy 4 repository, all 's working fine ...

I love your distro and i use it since the beginning.
I love the mind open source.
I use Debian at home and at office. Puppy is for me a fantastic tool that i alway keep in my pocket like a swiss knife.

THANK YOU FOR looking at this version of PUPPY from a newbie... or windows refugee view

It is very important!

Is it possible to have a summary page part of the Welcome screen, that explains a few of the basics as well as some of the intermediate goodies, and some of the expert goodies. 3 groups?

What I am asking is ... this blog mentions many times two desktop handlers... the newbie will not find that out for YEARS...or understand what it means.

Htop viewer is similar to Task manger in brand A... by not obvious to a new user.

I am not suggesting a full tutorial.. simply a MS vs Puppy cross reference of bullets... can be as simple as

Htop = Task Manger
Mtpaint = paint
Xclipboard = ????
Pwget = ???
Gxine = movie player

Smile

I see Help/how to multimedia has a lot of this.. in extend form.... but newbie may not take the time to hunt for help...

Old story... users do no read documentation!.... Documentation needs to be very self evident...simple menu selections or tree menus with VERY obvious uses.

Hesitate to suggest this.. but could a list as above be part of the background at startup? Icons go a log way to getting started.... I agree first impressions are very important...give the user as much information as they can handle...

Greg

Ok this is how you get stuff

for that station you wanted to view in french
Copy this url, paste it in the url box and then save the file
a988.v101995.c10199.e.vm.akamaistream.net/7/988/10199/3f97c7e6/ftvigrp.download.akamai.com/10199/horsgv/regions/siege/vod_cji/streaming_!/france5/270931.wmv

then right click on the file you just save and open it as text
then you'll have 2 direct downloads to view the videos Smile For some odd reason Gxine isn't playing asf streams, it usually did in the past out of the box. This should be fixed because its one of the most used codec for streams on the net, anyways I would use VLC to view this stream.

...or my kids.

I agree and disagree with you, greg. At some point, Windows converts will have to read.

As I look through the Puppy menu, I'm trying to think what I would have done if I had first come here from Windows. With Puppy, the stuff you click on if you just start clicking is explained very well, as well as can be in a few short phrases that will be read for each item. I have always thought this of Puppy over other distro's..

My point is that the Windows people I know, will click on it first, then read later...Puppy is very forgiving in that regard.

At this point I just want to make sure the help links they click on go to where they are supposed to...looks pretty good so far save for those I mentioned in other posts, including that icon error..

Hey Beem I've never had any issues with my 750G, 500G, 320G,X2 sata2 hard drives with puppy, do you think maybe its the cable, try swapping cables around and see what happens ?
ttuuxxx
Thanks for helping to try, but I saw upup 015 was out and tried it.
upup 015 sees all the partitions of my second drive correctly.
So I think it's a driver problem.
