No HP722 Printer Support in Puppy? (Solved)
No HP722 Printer Support in Puppy? (Solved)
All,
I have an HP 722C Deskjet printer that is not supported by the Puppy print driver database. This is an old generic printer that is supported by other Linux distros. I noticed that a lot of the HP 700 series printers were missing.
Is there an updated pet that has better printer support?

HP DeskJet 722C
Hi:
I'm don922 in the referenced thread
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=33530
I have never gotten my HP 722C to print. I don't understand linux very well and much of what I read about printing is way over my head.
Quite frankly, I became very discouraged and just gave up. Nothing ever seemed to work right. I believe that Petch which was a recommended tool to use to get the printer working is no longer supported.
In my experience printing, in Puppy, with any of the 700-1000 HP printers "win-printers" is a total disaster. I have, recently, found an article on getting these printers to print. Unfortunitly, the article is not Puppy specific. It is located here.
If you can get your 722C to print Please post a how to. I still have hope but at this point -- Not Much.

[OT] Petch
Tombh did leave puppy development and it's not clear if and/or whom take over.don922 wrote:Quite frankly, I became very discouraged and just gave up. Nothing ever seemed to work right. I believe that Petch which was a recommended tool to use to get the printer working is no longer supported.
Due to the move of Canari's servers something is broken for petch.
Parts can be used however.
On the other hand work is/will be done for puppy 4.2, maybe based on the puppy package manager Barry Kauler is developing.
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).

Try this for HP 722C

I attached the ppd

EDIT: oops I see don922 already posted..sorry 'bout that.
Petch is a software installer for the command line. Yup, I broke it when we moved as I forgot a file. Hopefully we can re-generate the package lists again.

Attached below is a driver PET for the HP Deskjet 710/720/820 printers.
Open the configuration file /etc/pnm2ppa.conf and uncomment the line that has the model of your printer.
Then run the CUPS setup wizard.
There is also a calibration program in /usr/local/bin.
calibrate_ppa - this is the calibration program
CALIBRATION.txt - these are the instructions for doing a calibration

Thanks for this information, I have downloaded it and will try to get the HP 722C to work in Puppy. I have spent a lot of time fighting this and it hasn't been fun.rcrsn51 wrote:OK. I think I've done this right. The attachment contains five files:
pnm2ppa - this is the filter - save it in /usr/local/bin
HP-DeskJet_722C-pnm2ppa.ppd - save it in /usr/share/cups/model
These two should be enough to set up a printer for your HP722C.
The other three files are used for calibrating your printer:
calibrate_ppa - this is the calibration program - save it in /usr/local/bin
pnm2ppa.conf - this is the configuration file - save it in /etc
CALIBRATION.txt - this has the instructions for doing a calibration

It Works!
Sweet! I extracted/edited the files as directed, ran the CUPs wizard and it prints as advertised...
Yes, it would be nice if Puppy 4.2 would have more HP printer support, considering that other distros support this series out of the box...
Thanks for your help!

No Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My HP 722C printer jinx continues.
For some reason the CUPS Printer Wizard does not start my default browser. I suspect that the problem might be that FirePup is my default browser. I can't imagine why CUPS would know the difference.
Can CUPS be run manually without the printer wizard? How? What is the CUPS address, if any, to type in the browser?
(edit) found the following address for CUPS -- http://localhost:631 If this is the correct address how do I manually start the CUPS daemon to run on my computer?

To see if the cups daemon is running (it should be), go to a console and type: top
You should see an entry for /usr/sbin/cupsd
If not, type the command: /etc/init.d/cups start
Regarding the CUPS wizard and your browser: The wizard launches the CUPS web interface using a stripped-down browser from the Seamonkey package. It may be that your Firepup package disabled it.
In your situation, you can go directly to http://localhost:631/ and add your printer from there. This assumes that you have already copied the PPD file to its correct location.
A question. If you haven't been able to get to the CUPS interface yet, how have you been trying to install this printer?

It's Printing
I'm printing as a write this. I added the printer by by going directly to http://localhost:631 after I had installed the files in accordance with your instructions.rcrsn51 wrote:Regarding the CUPS wizard and your browser: The wizard launches the CUPS web interface using a stripped-down browser from the Seamonkey package. I was using SeaMonkey until a couple of weeks ago when I install FirePup. I hadn't been trying to install the printer for some time -- I had completely given up on printing in Puppy.
Thank you very much for helping to get this working.
