Lighthouse Pup 4.4.2 Final SMP 194M
Hi Ray
Thanks for your reply.
I tried some other puplets (and not only puplets)on my old laptop (HP compaq nx9020, Celeron 1.4, 512 Mb RAM) and found LH 4.1.2 most convenient for me (with a few additional applications installed and wbar customized). But there is nothing perfect in our life. )))
In original Puppy and most of puplets asamp is running in tray on default but not in LH. I can run it on desktop but not in tray. As I mentioned in my update I have now amp running in tray and showing charge/discharge in percents in plain text, so there is nothing urgent. But it is interesting to understand how to configure tray.
By the way, in LH original volume control in tray replaced by direct link to sgmixer. Is it possible to restore original volume control?
And one more question about tray. I use three language keyboard layouts: english, latvian and russian. Is it possible to make keyboard layout indicator in tray?
All the best
Jev

I could be mistaken, but I think that is because typically other puplets and official puppy run JWM window manager instead of IceWM.jevmaks wrote:In original Puppy and most of puplets asamp is running in tray on default but not in LH. I can run it on desktop but not in tray.
I don't know of any other way to put a volume control in IceWM's tray. JWM should have the default volume control. To switch to JWM, click Menu | Logoff | Switch to JWM | OK.By the way, in LH original volume control in tray replaced by direct link to sgmixer. Is it possible to restore original volume control?
The only way I know of is to switch to KDE, part of Mariner SFS in LIghthousePup.And one more question about tray. I use three language keyboard layouts: english, latvian and russian. Is it possible to make keyboard layout indicator in tray?

Hi TazOC,
I see there's a new beta. I'll download and continue testing. From your previous beta a couple of things on my retro box:
Problem using sound wizard alsa-conf - it doesn't seem to work.
When started loses the task bar so need to restart X. It has muted all sound.
Using gparted brings up an information panel. For Vista you should suggest use the partition tool in Vista to create a new partition (so Vista doesn't get upset). Then reboot puppy and use gparted to create whatever you need with the new partition. Format a small Linux-swap partition and format the remainder to ext3 or whatever for storing Linux files.
You could also mention that you can store your pup_save files on existing NTFS partitions no problems - just de-frag the volume in Windows before you save them.
I operate all my Puppys with only a Linux swap partition - all other files, data, sfs, pup-save, grub etc. are stored on NTFS partitions. Using ext3 also works well. Avoid ext2 - it causes a full file system check every boot.

Just tried it and found the same... needed to log out to command line, then type 'alsaconf'. Maybe I should make a wrapper that advises to log out first.Barburo wrote:From your previous beta a couple of things on my retro box:

Thank you that is good to know. I haven't had time or enough free disk space to install Vista. Barry wrote the info panel wrapper for gParted but I could modify it for LHP. Can the Vista partition tool resize an existing NTFS to make room for a Linux-swap?Using gparted brings up an information panel. Vista repartition Tool
Yes, there should be no problems using the Vista repartition tool to make an extra Linux-swap partition.
Many laptops come pre-formatted with Vista and also with a recovery partition. You don't get a recovery/reinstall CD. Such was the case for me. I didn't want to Junk Vista so I had to find out how to live with it. The recovery partition was 10Gigs that I could put to better use, so I repartitioned that first.
So long as Vista does the initial resizing and repartitioning it will boot OK. After you've used Puppy and gparted to format the new partition it goes away to think for a long time but eventually comes back.

I have the beta 4 with the beta 4 mariner SFS and am having trouble connecting to my XP Pro-hosted RDC server using KRDC. When I go into RVXT and issue:
the connecting dialog comes up but never does anything. I usually have to CTRL+C out from the terminal. I should note that I have configured Windows RDC to use port 80 instead of 3389 or whatever, and have successfully connected from other Linux distros using rdesktop as well as from XP on this laptop.
Is there something I'm doing wrong? KRDC will not show any hosts and will not allow me to rescan, although I suspect it would only look at the default RDC port anyway.

Krdc not working in Mariner
Hi geodescent,
My implementation of KDE does not include HAL/Automount/udev, which Krdc probably requires. My grasp of these components is rudimentary but my guess is that Desktop Sharing and Krdc does not work in LHP Mariner and I need to remove them and note Mariner accordingly. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Would Pnethood Samba shares suffice? It does allow me to connect to Windoze shares on my LAN.

Actually, I discovered there was a problem with my syntax. Issuing
yields a better result but then I am notified that rdesktop is not installed, so I may look into getting a PUP for it. Worth a try though.

Hi tazoc. Is it possible to do a hard drive install of Lighthouse which includes the sfs files? I'm thinking not only of the KDE files but also the development files that enable me to compile software with Puppy, as I can in other distros.
I gather it's difficult to do this but I thought I'd seen you say there is a way of doing it.
Thanks in advance,
CP .

@CP,
I haven't tested a full install of LighthousePup. Can you compile from a frugal install of LHP with devx_412.sfs and kernel-src-2.6.25.15-patched-puppy4.1.sfs? If not, you could experiment with the Puppy Universal Installer but I don't know how to safely merge SFS files into a full install.

A brief update; I've just completed a hard drive install of Lighthouse and am posting from it now. It's working well, though it took a bit of fiddling to get right.
The install script doesn't recognise the Lighthouse sfs file, so I had to copy it (the sfs) to a "plain" puppy 412 sfs before the script would run with it. I also had some fun and games with Grub, but that's nothing I haven't had with it before in other distros and why I normally use Lilo or Loadlin when I've got the option.
Success anyway, and thanks for a good distro!
Regards,
Colonel Panic .
P.S. The installation doesn't extract the contents of either the Voyager or the Mariner sfs files to the hard drive, but I'm not too bothered about that. I've been testing a couple of other Puppy derivatives recently such as Teenpup or Fire Hydrant (which I've also had some success with) and I may consider a second Puppy hard drive install if I need some extra applications which Lighthouse doesn't provide as standard. We're lucky to have so much choice with Puppy.

I've just downloaded and installed Beta 5 of Lighthouse, and I have to say I'm impressed. It's stable and doesn't lock up on my machine which is very prone to doing that, and it feels big and expansive with some nice fonts.
It also uses some Slackware 10 packages I've kept over from Vector 5, such as Adobe Acrobat 7 and Open Office 2.0.3.
I'll probably keep trying other pups including John Biles's forthcoming Teenpup Legacy, but this one looks like a "keeper" on my machine. Thanks for a good job of work.

@Vanchutr & Colonel Panic,
Thank you for the kind words and feedback. I'm working on an update, LHP 4.1.2 rc1 and Mariner 4c with some support for newer ATI display adapters, a few updated apps and a fix (gtk-core-update) for Firefox javascript instability by forum member drummachine. I would like to update wine at some point, need to look into that. How did you do it, vanchutr?

How to update to wine1.1.18
I'd updated Ligthhouse with newest wine1.1.18
No too much. You can download wine1.1.18 from http://ifile.it and then
in console use "tar -xzvf wine1.1.18.tar.gz -C /"
Download link: http://ifile.it/3vt4ge0
Descriptive link: http://ifile.it/3vt4ge0/wine1.1.18.tar.gz
You can upload this tar file to your website.
Thank you again and good luck to you, cheer

You can unsquash an squash (.sfs) file
Note: Must use appropriate "unsquashfs" with your puppy. If this .sfs is squash in pup_aaa the you must use unsquashfs of pup_aaa
