Dougal Enhanced Remaster

#1 Post by rAndMLemnT »

I love the leaps and bounds that this distribution and it's puplets make! What is sorely missed beyond version 2.17 is Dougal's enhanced remaster. The standard remaster is great in it's own right. But from my perspective, the D.E.R. saved all web browser bookmarks; settings...everything. Everything.

Dougal was gracious enough to send me the file which he said needed updating. Alas, I am only intermediate in my skills...(I did successfully install Arch with GUI, Yayyy...) so if someone with more grey matter than me was inclined, I think that would be the icing on the doggy treat as it were.

All the best,

Jim

Yes it was a nice remastering program for the 2 series but when it came to series 3 it didn't work right, it killed Xvesa from working and everyone who remastered had to use Xorg. By series 4.0 it wasn't fixed and was dropped. It would be nice if it was updated and worked out of the box, Why not post the file on here and maybe someone would update it :)

re-master

Thanks in advance. I can see how it's inconvenient for xvesa to be unavailable. The box I'm running on now has an older ATI card and does not play well with Xorg.

That's not entirely true....I used it with Muppy which was verion 3.x with no problems.

It would be nice to see it updated....perhaps MU can do it as he continues to work on NewYearsPup which is 4.x based.

Thom

While not an elegant solution one could try this with the remaster with the simple remaster script:

Run the remaster script
When asked to inspect /tmp/root
In terminal
rm -r /tmp/root
cp -R /root /tmp/root
(Saves root to /tmp/root

When asked about /etc
Answer yes to customize /etc
then
rm -r /tmp/etc
cp -R /etc /tmp/etc
saves /etc to /tmp/etc

It worked with 3.x ... perhaps someone can try it and report on the 4.x results.

Hi Thom Muppy is a excellent release that MU has spent countless hours with, I wouldn't be surprised that MU fixed it for his release, But yes it does kill Xvesa in the Official release, I based my Fire Hydrants on it, and had the problem, so did many of other user have same the same issues, at the time of 3 series there were a lot of complaints about Xvesa being broken and it was narrowed down to Dougal Enhanced Remaster, It worked 100% with the puppy default remaster, but as soon as Dougal Enhanced Remaster was used, Xvesa was no longer was usable. :?

also you can manually delete /tmp/root copy the /root/ folder to it :)
thats how I do it .

But it should work out of the box without any user intervention. Until thats fixed, then its basically broken. I would like to see an updated working version for maybe 4.2 or 4.3

Yep....I posted how I do it...and some folks may want to copy over the /etc material..especially if they change profile as I do.

Woof Puppy Build System

#11 Post by Lobster »

What is sorely missed beyond version 2.17 is Dougal's enhanced remaster
It was very straightforward. Elements of it were included in the universal installer in later version. For ease of use Dougal's version was very good.

Barry is working on a Puppy Build System (Woof) that should once again allow for ease of use in creating puplets

hmm dougals script seems to work just fine on 4.12 (a full install as it happens)...producing a perfect remaster with working xvesa.
The only strange side effect is that puppy won't shut down after using it..just keeps returning to X

mike

ps why does this forum suddenly become useable after 5pm gmt?

I was sent Dougals remasterpup2 by someone modified for Muppy.
I think the only change was, to use "zmsy" instead of zdrv, and "msy" instead of "pup".
Muppy used this different namning convention.

For newyearspup 02 rc7 , I renamed the occurences back to zdrv and pup.

It seems to work, there is just one issue concerning Multisession.
You can save one session to the remastered DVD once, but then you cannot boot again.
The system hangs forever when "switching to the layered filesystem".

I have no idea yet, what causes this.
I also don't have tested, if this is due to remasterpup2, or due to NYP itself.
Would be interesting to know, if that works in Puppy 4.12.

I did NOT tryit in xvesa!

The version from nyp02rc7 is attached.
It would be great to solve this, it is one of the last remaing bugs that keeps me from releasing NYP as "final".

no problem so far

I have no problem with it, and I suppose it will keep working until there's an overhaul of Puppy's structure. I posted my copy at http://minipc.org/safepup/index.php?file=How%20to%20Build.htm
