It gets worse!
/etc/keymap says "uk.map"
and
/etc/X11/xorg.conf clearly shows "gb"

but the output of
@ is "
£ is #
~ is |
\ is <
and
CTL-ALT-4 does NOT give euro symbol
etc.
No idea what the problem is. As I said, I tried to enter the correct assignments in everything I could find. Maybe the gb file is using another European configuration? I used to know some of those but have forgotten them now. Hope you can come up with the answer, Mark, as it's pretty serious!
Am using a bog std. old Dell k/b (with the Win key) and no fancy fastkeys, which, frankly, I've found to be a waste of good plastic.

I think it has to do with
/etc/X11/xkb/
When I replace it with the one from Muppy, I get the same error for the "de" layout.

ok, got it.
Please type:

cd /etc/X11/xkb/symbols
ln -s gb uk

Then restart X or type:
setxkbmap -layout uk

Well done Mark.
The keybd layout has never worked for me either despite various previous help (see Wow's earlier input on this thread) but it does now.
Thanks

Dave,
I'm glad this is solved now :D

------------------------------
йцукенгшщз
éèçà

I attach a small pet.
It has the missing symlink for british keyboards.
It also has 4 "keyboard-*.desktop" files (in /usr/share/applications/).

If you right-click the "buttons" in the LXDE-panel, you can add own buttons there.
"Application Launchbar" Settings - Add.

Then you get those buttons to switch a keyboard layout on the fly :)

Wireless success!

#229 Post by Frila »

Now I'm happy again. At last my Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5000AGN Adapter works!! I can use my new laptop also. Just added iwlwifi-5000-1.ucode to /lib/firmware and now it works like a charm.
I'm smiling from ear to ear :D :D.

Well done again!

I don't know if you have changed anything with the Network Wizard but that also works as it should. Earlier I have been forced to do some tricks in the terminal before being able to connect, but now it connects directly.
More smiling...

Mark, stupid question - which one contains ATI & NVIDIA driver built-in? I tried Micro - it isn't there, I tried Mini, it also isn't there. Is it in Midi?

Also, I couldn't help but note that the welcoming banner of NYP is Puppy 4.1.1 .... does it mean NYP has not included patches for Puppy 4.1.2 ?

cheers!

the nvidia/ati drivers are included in Midi and maxi.

I plan to release standalone pets this week, so that you also can use only 1 driver of your choice in ultrapup or NYP Micro/Mini.
This modular upgrade of the small versions is a goal for the next weeks, once the big ones run as expected (what they almost do now).

It is based on 4.1.1, but most files were replaced with newer versions.
Also some 4.12 patches were applied, and we modified several files on our own.

If you encounter any bug that was unfixed for 4.11, let me know, so that I can fix it.

Compiz

#233 Post by Frila »

To day I decided to test Compiz. Well, of course it also works. Amazing, just a few clicks with the mouse. How have you been able to do so simple? :)

But why does the panel act as a window?? I can alt-tab it like it was an own window :? .

Frila,

compiz is very different from other windowmanagers, not only from the look, but also concerning interaction with other programs.

For example, I once wrote a utility to list the IDs of all iconified windows.
It works in most windowmanagers, but compiz returns a empty list.

So in some cases - like with the lxpanel, you may see that things are not 100% integrated yet. Hopefully version 1.0.0 will fix these issues, but I think it still will take a while, until this is reached.
Compiz will be completely rewritten in the next releases.

If you understand german, this article might be interesting:
http://www.pro-linux.de/news/2009/13836.html

It explains a bit the background.

Perhaps one needs to stand back a very long way from the coalface and ask what wobbly windows and rotating cubes can really do, except absorb masses of resources. It's exactly the sort of gimmick to be expected from the Jobs stable, then mimicked by the Redmond goons. Even in gaming, its achievement is difficult to relate to tangible benefits. Great fun, pretty, stretches the intellect for coders, but probably useless apart from the spin-off in touch-phones. Frankly, I don't see much future for desktop touch screens in the domestic scenario, anyway - W7 goodbye! Another overbloated expensive twist of the techno-screw to draw in the lemmings.

About System Stats, Mark: I'm a-thinkin' that a return to XProc in early Puppies might be acceptable and might save a bundle of code? The 'Advanced' option looks remarkably like the dmesg list which would solve that little problem. As I said previously, HardInfo confers little extra except bloat and benchmarking; the latter is entirely superfluous for compact/live-CD applications.

Java

#236 Post by techtype »

Mark,

Typing java in the console of RC7 midi produces "command not found"??? Same thing in RC3 finds java. Where did it go??

Did you take it to class and forget to bring it back?

Opera tells me there is an update available....which flavor should I select to work with NewYearsPup?

I installed Realplayer11, which Firefox calls with no problem. What file has the setting that allows Opera to do the same?

I've created a Bootable USB with RC7 and it works perfectly....so problems with saving sessions etc. Thanks for all the work.

java is not included, as it would be another 30 MB.
But I just uploaded a SFS:
jre1.6.0_12-jedit-4.3pre16_411.sfs

http://puppyisos.org/isos/2009-01-to-06 ... Midi-Maxi/
user: puppy, password: linux

More info:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=38690

You'll also find there Java_ee_sdk5_06-Eclipse3.4.1_411.sfs, but attention: it is almost 400 MB, as it is the development version, with the Enterprise edition and Eclipse.

I currently try to build a Java iso, with Eclipse, and the windows version of Java.
Currently the size is 800 MB, I want to reduce it by deleting more unneeded packages.

I post info about my progress here:

For Opera I always use the slackware version.
Slackware 11.0, 12.0, 12.1
In the past, you also could choose "static" or "shared".
I used shared here, so it used the qt3 library I had included.
This has nicer fonts than the static version.

But it seems, the current one no longer gives this choice, I think you will get the "shared" version, so it is ok.
