Openoffice for puppy 4 - Where is it?

#1 Post by ecomoney »

Ive just been trying to install openoffice at company headquarters. I thought it would be a fairly easy job considering

1. It is one of the most popular packages out there, offers the biggest cost saving of open source compared to an M$ Office Licience

2. It can be run on windows, giving people a gradual way of upgrading to open source gradually

3. It gives powerpoint document support to puppy

4. Office computers are the next most common type after home computers.

I couldnt find a package anywhere for it. I tried Petget, google search, and the forum. I found one for puppy 3 (a difficult for newbs to install .sfs), but it says theat it was compiled under a different kernel version and may not work under other puppies.

In not sure if a version for puppy 4 exists or not, but I dont have time to hunt further, but "cant find it" and "it isnt there" amounts to the same thing.

Also The Open Office from puppy 3 works on 4.0 and also the open office from puppy 2 works on puppy 4.0 and thats like 44MB cutdown :)
I tried them before on series 4.0+, and worked just fine.

I installed Open Office 3 from a PET file hosted here:

Works fine.

I installed the openoffice3.pet file by Evil20071 . It complained of missing depepndencies (python mostly) and I dont know if this will cause any issues. The theme in 4.2 RC1 (which Im using) makes it difficult to see the greyed out entries in the menu, but I will report that on the relevant thread. Im just testing to see if the automatic update feature works while Im writing this.

The puppy custom google search is a great tool, but many new users wont know about it. For something like openoffice a new puppy 4 user (like me!) should really be able to find software as popular as this in the repository from the install icon on the desktop. Who is responsible for maintaining the repository?

Would someone with more time/skills on their hands update the puppy wiki at http://puppylover.netsons.org/dokupuppy ... fice_suite which is a little out of date. I think it might be a good idea to include a link on how to install .sfs files as well.

Anybody remember the command for a manual install by just unpacking all the .rpms. I prefer that way as I did it once already and have it downloaded already.

I can't find it now for some reason. Just found it a week ago.

EDIT:
Here you go if anyone's curious.

sketchman; from your link
3. The previous command will extract all the files to a subfolder. Change folders to the RPMS folder under that newly created folder. e.g.
cd OOB680_m5_native_packed-1_en-US.9011/RPMS

4. Extract the RPM files with the following command (all one line)
for FILENAME in *.rpm ; do exec rpm2cpio "$FILENAME" | cpio -i -d; done

5. The previous command will create a opt subfolder and under that an openoffice.org2.0 folder. Move that folder to a final location. Please note that it must be a place with enough space such as your /mnt/home folde. e.g.
mv opt/openoffice.org2.0 /mnt/home
Is that the one?

Yep. I much prefer manual install for most things. I like knowing what's going where.

But, yeah, I followed those instructions and I have the latest OO on my 4.0 in no time, and it works fine. I just had to set up shortcuts for what I wanted on my desktop.
