Newyearspup 02 Micro, Mini, Midi, and Maxi RC10
SystemStats: I've mentioned it several times over the years. BK did show a brief interest just before he switched to HardInfo. No idea if there's a .pet - probably not? HI includes some benchmarking options - pretty useless for a compact distro - kiddies stuff for 'dozers. SS is smaller and faster. Get it from DSL.
Yes, we've discussed acpi=force many times and it is indeed what I use, but it's a workaround not a fix. There are plenty of Slack and other distros that DO shutdown correctly, so this constitutes a coding error for Puppy. There must be folks who know the answer why. Not much point in my researching it, though, because I don't understand that end of the biz.
Thanks, anyway, Mark.
Best of luck with the job search. In GB, 35 is now considered the upper limit for employment and to avoid ageist de-selection. Illegal it may be, but how to prove it. No wonder the world's in a mess - too many youthful gits running things. You have to get old to gain experience and these kids must be quaking in their boots in case an older person is employed and all their infantile games are unmasked. In recent eras, Chinese and Soviet leaders didn't get into high office until ~80yrs. Notwithstanding, there's always an exception to the wisdom of sages, viz. Mugabe!

Hi Mark,
Tried your rc5 MAXI as a frugal install.
Initially I planned to overwrite my existing installation (rc3) on a partition but never got as far as being able to get to the Puppy universal installer due to x server not recognising my card. (Nvidia FX5200 needing the 173 driver).
So started from a reformated empty partition.
Chose pfix=ram
Selected language and keyboard layout then chose NOT to reboot but couldn't get it to recognise my card. Tried nvidia 173, nv and xorgwizard but always got pushed back to "type xorgwizard to setup X"
Okay so reformated the partition again to be clean of any save files and now selected "reboot to create save file."
Also copied pup_411.sfs file across from CD to the partition, as I usually do.
After it had made a save file it rebooted but this time I didn't do pfix=ram so got the choice of which save file to use and selected the newly made one.
Selected 173 graphics driver
Got message "x seems to have exited uncleanly".
Anyway typed xwin at # prompt and got "type xorgwizard"
"Select graficsdriver" screen appeared.
Selected xorgwizard this time and got "Puppy Video Wizard" screen.
Selected xorg then got "if x failed to start, type xorgwizard to setup x "
This time tried to force nv.
Got black screen.
Sadly after all we went through to get this FX5200 card working in rc3 (many thanks) it now seems to be broken again. Or am I doing something wrong?
Your help as ever would be appreciated.
Thanks
Dave

I tried the Maxi......it "appears" that you can save to the Live-CD 4 times.....being bold, I remastered it...and discovered that the remastered version simply will not save a session.MU wrote:I uploaded release candidate 4.
Micro, Mini, Midi, and Maxi.
NOT looked at yet, as I was too busy with the other points:
- any menu related issues
- sis graficschips
- remaster issues.
Mark
Could it be that the pet you created of the Dougal remaster is bad?
So....I thought I would go back to creating a bootable USB version....and then discovered that the CUPS in this version has changed, and no longer supports a USB printer.
Thom
for the nvidia users:
please try, if this works:
Choose one of the nvidia drivers.
Then when X fails to start, type:
depmod -a
xwin
If that fixes it, I must add a line for the nvidia module to modules.dep.
Thom,
I did not replace cups, just cups_shell, the first dialog that pops up.
So I think your USB-problem might be related to the kernel.
Please type:
lsmod | grep usb
You should get such a result:
If these modules are not listed, try to load them:
modprobe ehci_hcd
modprobe ohci_hcd
modprobe uhci_hcd
The remaster-script is a new localized version.
You might try to use the one from an older NYP (/usr/sbin/remasterpup2)

No, that does not work for me. I'm trying to load the "180" driver. (thats what it says instead of 182 that you mention)MU wrote:for the nvidia users:

So, how can I restore the shell so that it allows me to add a usb printer?MU wrote:

I did ... and that's is the version that does NOT save everything I added in the /root and /etc folders....that's why the Dougal script was the one I used in previous versions.MU wrote:

The latest from this thread?:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=31522
Can you give me a downloadlink to a version, that works correct?
Then I will add it to the next release.
/usr/sbin/cups_shellSo, how can I restore the shell so that it allows me to add a usb printer?
I attach the old one from rc3.
But I think that this is not the reason.
It must be another issue, maybe because of the new kernel.
I have no idea at moment
I will add it to my todo list for next weekend, to test it with my own printer.

Mark,
Good and bad news.
I ran from a CD and did Pfix=ram.
It then suggested I make a save file which I did.
1.
on reboot I did NOT do a pfix=ram and chose the new save file.
Then selected nvidia driver 173 which, as last time, didn't work.
So tried:
depmod -a
then
xwin and (THE GOOD NEWS) it worked as far as the 173 driver loaded and compiz works.
But (THE BAD NEWS):
2.
I find this new way of making a save file at the start very confusing.
As it wants to make a save file I assume that means I must make a frugal install to disk.
Tried this using Puppy Universal installer and got messages about the partition being mounted and unable to unmount. But as I had no other place to go I just plodded on and tried to install. It seemed to load the files to disk despite all the warnings.
Then I tried to install grub to that partition using "Grub Bootloader Config" and got error message " partition is mounted read-only." But no way to un-mount it. So can't boot into it!
3. So then I tried a full install by ignoring the prompt to make a save file. All seemed to install okay as did adding grub to the partiton. But it didn't boot and I see no grub files installed.
Tried to go to another distro and install grub to the NYC full and frugal partitions but still wont boot.

Dave,
is there also another system installed on that computer?
Did you have a working grub, before you installed newyearspup?
Thanks for reporting the success with the 173 driver, so it is just 1 line I must add tomorrow to the new iso rc6.

I have an 8800, but I was trying it on my 7300.
ok, so we might have the same issue as here:techtype wrote:

So I had to add again an option to install some files in addition for 8x00 based cards.
I will add it tommorrow for rc6.

As Pedro pointed out above, there are file errors:
module nv does not exist in /proc/modules
module nvidia not found.

Hi Mark,
The other save file showed up but I was careful to select the one saved for NYP.
Cheers
Dave
Yes it has several distros including full installs of pup 412 and 420rc1 plus a frugal of NOP.Dave,
is there also another system installed on that computer?

Yes and it still works okay for the other distros. I added the appropriate grub stanza to the menu.lst file on the distro that takes care of all the booting selection. Just NYP not working and highly likely that it's a prob with installing grub files to the NYP partition. As I said the installs both full and frugal just didn't seem to work as they did before the changes to rc4.Did you have a working grub, before you installed newyearspup?
Yes that's good news. Thanks for that. Thanks for reporting the success with the 173 driver, so it is just 1 line I must add tomorrow to the new iso rc6.

Dave,
if you have a working grub, there need no grub files to be installed in addirtion for NYP.
So I do not exactly understand the problem.
If you have a working grub, you just need to edit your existing menu.lst.
You add a new block for NYP there.
If you did that, could you post that block here via copy&paste?
I'm a bit puzzled, because here it works as usual.
I just did not use the universal installer, but copied the files with the filemanager to an own subfolder.
My grub entry looks like this:
I have on sda6:
/newyearspup02rc4/initrd.gz
/newyearspup02rc4/vmlinuz
And on sdb7:
/newyearspup02rc4/pup_411
/newyearspup02rc4/pup_save.2fs (created at first launch, when the new menu suggested it).

As Pedro pointed out above, there are file errors:
module nv does not exist in /proc/modules

This is ok.module nv does not exist in /proc/modules
xorgwizard tries to unload the free nv driver, just in case you used that before.
If you did not use it, you see this info, it is no error.
(fixme: it might not be able to unload it, should add a "reboot" option for reliable unload).
This should be solved bymodule nvidia not found.
depmod -a
(once you had chosen a nvidia driver).
When you choose a nvidia driver, one of the archives from /usr/local/graficsdrivers/ is extracted.
This extracts: /lib/modules/2.6.28.5/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko
Now the kernel only finds this, if it is listed in:
/lib/modules/2.6.28.5/modules.dep
The command "depmod -a" adds this line.
If this does not work for you, there must be another error.
I will investigate that tomorrow with my Nvidia 7050 chip (I must remove my additional ATI card for this test).

Mark,
Thanks for your reply. I have added my menu.lst (it's at /dev/sda3/boot/grub) with the unimportant bits taken out.
When I say I have a working grub I mean its installed in the MBR which points at sda3 which has the grub stanzas for the other partitions.
Unless I am mistaken I have always believed I needed grub files to be installed into / of the individual partition the way I have it set up. Those that have it can be booted. Those that dont cant be booted. At least that's for full installs.
Lets look at it another way. if your new rc4/rc5 method wants a save file to be made at the start what is the process of making a full install. I always believed a full install doesn't have a save file.
Also why cant I use grub install with a full install as it wont allow me to unmount the partition?
All this is different from the other puppies and also NYP up to rc3 so thats why i am curious as it may be the reason i cant get an install up and running.
Thanks Mark as ever
