Barry's spup-011 iso very fast |
|
X in Barry's alpha 2 iso is VERY FAST on my desktop hardware. It's noticeably faster than my alpha 1 spup build and 4.1.2. Is anyone else seeing a speed gain?

has anyone tried using apt to get their packages for debian/Ubuntu? When I used to use .deb based systems, I would use the <10mb minimal cd and apt to download a set of programs, which would automatically download the dependencies and store a copy of all the packages in cache (I think this had to be set)
Then I copied these to my boxes that had no net access and installed them..... instead you could use this method to get your packages for woof

Okay, it looks like I need to do some work on the downloader script, so that it checks that everything has properly downloaded.
Interesting though, I went through the entire exercise for Slack Puppy, from '0setup' onward, and all Slackware packages downloaded. I did this just before releasing alpha2. But I'm at my relatives place who has super fast "naked-adsl", so maybe that helps -- maybe the timeouts I have set when wget probes for availability of a package in '1download' need to be increased.

Yes, "Intrepid Puppy" is now available. Already at alpha 2.1:

Hi Barry, I love the woof script you're writing, however I want to be able to strip back the original packages further, not install some of the apps and install others in their place. Much like a build from unleashed. I'm assuming at some point you'll automate this more so it's similar, but until you do, can you tell me which scripts I need to hack to add/remove packages from the build? Thanks.

Hi Barry I just have a few quick questions about this alpha 2.1
Does it have the same Wireless and monitor support as puppy say 4 Series? If so then this alpha could actually be a project base, similar to what we did with 4.2. Thanks for your insight and dedicated work.

Barry has just released an Ubuntu ISO version of Woof (upup) - I tried this but could not get into xwin (xorg) to run.
I tried changing various settings in the config file but was unsuccessful.
Anyone else got it working?

I had a similar problem with the Ubuntu Woof using Woof Alpha which was my first attempt at building a Woof.
The Slackware Woof started X OK, as did the Debian Woof - both made with Alpha 2. I'm impressed with the Debian Woof - lightning quick.
I'll download and burn the latest Ubuntu Woof and try that as well.
When I get time I'll have a go with dPup on both the Asus eeepc as well as the Intel Classmate. From experience, I reckon that Ubuntu Woof will do well on the Asus eeepc.
update:
just tried uPup. As Lobster also discovered, X doesn't start. The xorg.conf is configured for nVidia whereas I have an ATI Radeon 3450. Is the ATI driver missing in uPup or is a later xorg version to blame? Could be the Puppy kernel maybe.

X-PUP
-First try
Ok it booted fine, xorg was fine, buttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
when the desktop opened I selected Setup icon on the desktop, then I select 'Connect to the internet' and boom it froze completely, even the shiftlock didn't work, nothing, couldn't get out of it, and this is on a clean system with no puppy files on it.
-Second try,
this time I just select browser and boom it froze and the same crash as above
-Third try
I selected file on the desktop to open rox and boom it froze again, same as above

Full HD install |
|
Downloaded slack-pup iso and tried to format drive partition for a FULL hard drive install.
Gparted refused to function from menu.
Used another puppy to do this.
The install cd did not complete and I did not get a menu 1st in boot dir, so no boot up from HD.

What's happenning here? Are we building from woof tarball or downloading pre-built woof? I built apup from alpha-1, worked ok albeit some things broken, then I managed to fix some. Bulding a woof on weekend.
Please clarrify if you built or downloaded your 'x'-pup. (will help BK too )

slack-iso |

I downloaded the pre-built slack-pup iso for testing purposes.ie spup-011.iso.
Being on dial up I havn`t tried to build any distro from scratch.
Burnt iso to cd and booted from it.
Simply trying to help in bug finding, and making the base setup secure.

spup 011.iso- live cd on Intel Celeron 600MHz, 256MB ram.
I like it, it's faster than Puppy 412.
But I can't get cups to work- like a previous poster I get 404 not found error. I've checked everything- it all seems to be the same as 412.
Comparison using top shows that /usr/sbin/cups_shell doesn't start, but I can't see why.

I don`t know what cups is in it but if it`s anything like a modern one then we may have problems
if your on a line printer. I`ve found some notes from somewhere that mentions changing
rc.services to modprobe the parport before init.d gets run. In this way the lpr gets recognised in CUPS on reboot.
modprobe parport
modprobe parport_pc
modprobe lp
chmod 066 /dev/lp0
I tried it in pup 4.2RC1 and it works. Also there is something to do with file permissions if your running samba having to change var/spool/cups to temp location.
Also udev reports on bootup cant find lp - oh well keep trying.
My printer is hpdeskjet 710c on parallel port so I need this working. Usually I have to
compile a pnm2ppa.tar.gz file into the full hard drive install and place a ppd file in /usr/share/cups /model file that cups can see but I`m not sure if Cups is looking there anymore.

I tried spup (slax version of woof) from a live cd boot on a Compaq Presario with AMD Athalon X2 4800 Duel-Core Processor, Nvidia GeForce 6150 SE Graphics and 3 gigabytes of ram.
I started it with pfix=ram.
The select mouse and keyboard displays showed up and were selected.
But I got a black screen after that with a lot of hard drive activity and no cd activity.
I think that there should not be all that hard drive activity going on.
With 3 gigs of ram I should have more than enough for it to come up to a desktop.
I then tried an HP desktop with 384 megs of ram hooked up to a Poloroid TV and still got the black screen.
The only PC that accepted it is an old 900mhz Dell with 384 megs of ram and an ATI rage 64 video card hooked up to an IBM G70 monitor.
I saw no offering of Xvesa as a display option and I think a lot of users rely on Xvesa to work around display problems.
As a result of this, I think it needs a lot more refining.

Sadly, I'm having the same "Acer Aspire One" bug as with FatDog 110 & 111.
After installing on USB stick:
System loads up but no X & does not respond to "ctrl+alt+backspace", or "alt+F1, F2, etc...".
It works OK on the CD with Xorg @ 1024x600 24 bits.
It's a real bummer cause it works really nice of the CD, wifi, sound...
