I am running the Slackware ready made live CD ISO
OK it is pretty bonkers to 'test' a difficult package
but why not
So I started with Compiz - the compiz part seemed to be installing OK
But I also needed my nvidia driver
Would the driver need recompiling with the woof devxx?
It seems so as it is not taking.
The package management system is well stocked.
Maybe I should try something easy
Update - the Nvidia config is there but the driver is not loading
Tried Xfce - was not running - but mousepad the xfce editor is running from the Puppy interface, Thunar did not load but was there and the Xfce package manager . . .
tried fluxbox - nope
OK gonna have to try a simple program . . . so many to choose from . . .

Yes, there are going to be some packages that might not work properly as-is in Puppy.
I have been contemplating a user feedback mechanism that can auomatically blacklist a certain package on a certain repo, or modify it's dependency list. This could be automatically added online somewhere for the Puppy Package Manager to read.
...this is dreaming, I don't know how to do such a thing (yet).

Always good to dream Barry . . .
The Slackware version compiled from Alpha 1 has moved on.
Just noticed the FullerScreen slide presenter (under graphics)
- that has a LOT of potential uses
Would it be easy to install in Deep Thought?
Will Woof Beta or later version be based on Deep Thought?
I notice people are already clamouring for a Woof Ubuntu . . .
What I can say is the packages downloaded OK
There are more available than in Alpha 1
Woof is already generating a lot of well deserved interest . . .

I just had a go at building a Woof Ubuntu.
Had big problems with downloading the packages - many were missing - After trying the2createpackages script and getting many errors, I ran out of patience eventually.
I then downloaded the sPup iso.
It booted ok and runs well. The CUPS daemon wouldn't start though, so I couldn't try out printing.

I am not sure if Barry fixed this - he did mention effort
was required for this situation . . .
In Alpha 1 I ran the download part 10 times (it kept picking up more packages) Eventually I hoped that was enough to compile the Slackware Puppy - it was . . .
talking of Slackware
has this been suggested /
any use?

Hope that helps

OK, a much better result this time - but with dPup (Debian) . Here's the saga:

Then I remembered Loster's advice about downloading several times until the packages were correctly accessed and downloaded.
The second attempt appeared to be much more successful with the 2createpackages script unable to find only one missing package - xorg-common.
Google could find no trace of this package, but it kept coming up with x11-common instead. So I downloaded this, renamed it to xorg-common and copied it as before, after which the 2createpackages script seemed to terminate with no errors. The download from the Debian servers by the way seem much faster and more reliable than the Ubuntu servers - so that must have helped. (see above abortive attempt with Ubuntu).
The ISO was then built with the later kernel without problems.
Aha, so lets have a try and see if it works.
This is the first ever base Puppy version that has ever been able to configure xorg to recognise the ATI Radeon 3450 video card that's in the PC.
The cups daemon starts on this version, but there are still problems. I can't see the printer on the USB port in CUPS and will not accept a current root password either. So CUPS is still a no go.
Neither Abiword nor Gnumeric would start due to missing libraries.
This version has a great turn of speed as well, so for me it's a keeper! I like the looks as well.
The problems I daresay will be eliminated over time. It sure is on the right track though.

New package manager UI
I suspect the seed is already in the ground, but the current package manager user interface needs a makeover. Something much more Synaptic-like is called for now that our PM is in the big leagues. New users (and reviewers) will likely pan the current GUI. No slam intended. It's just that the "Woof" concept has raised the bar. It's time to take the next step with excellence. I'm SURE we can find some talented GUI mavens somewhere
I m doing this on a four Gig USB flash
so I have to juggle a few things around
1) can you confirm the total package count
for packages-pet (I have 230)
2.)can you confirm the total package count for
packages-tgz (I have 353)
what could be used to tail the progress ?
or a packages.txt to compare to
I was doing some work around
the house while it was downloading
so when I came back I wanted to verify
the download
I have built with unleashed countless times since puppy 2.13
and you could download all packages with gftp
and confirm if you had all or not
here is a list of what I downloaded
is it all there ?
I added the md5sums also
Updated with my package list
sorry ,if I overlooked something
thanks in advance
will report my findings

Barry's spup-011 iso very fast
X in Barry's alpha 2 iso is VERY FAST on my desktop hardware. It's noticeably faster than my alpha 1 spup build and 4.1.2. Is anyone else seeing a speed gain?

has anyone tried using apt to get their packages for debian/Ubuntu? When I used to use .deb based systems, I would use the <10mb minimal cd and apt to download a set of programs, which would automatically download the dependencies and store a copy of all the packages in cache (I think this had to be set)
Then I copied these to my boxes that had no net access and installed them..... instead you could use this method to get your packages for woof

Okay, it looks like I need to do some work on the downloader script, so that it checks that everything has properly downloaded.
Interesting though, I went through the entire exercise for Slack Puppy, from '0setup' onward, and all Slackware packages downloaded. I did this just before releasing alpha2. But I'm at my relatives place who has super fast "naked-adsl", so maybe that helps -- maybe the timeouts I have set when wget probes for availability of a package in '1download' need to be increased.

Hi Barry, I love the woof script you're writing, however I want to be able to strip back the original packages further, not install some of the apps and install others in their place. Much like a build from unleashed. I'm assuming at some point you'll automate this more so it's similar, but until you do, can you tell me which scripts I need to hack to add/remove packages from the build? Thanks.

Hi Barry I just have a few quick questions about this alpha 2.1BarryK wrote:

Does it have the same Wireless and monitor support as puppy say 4 Series? If so then this alpha could actually be a project base, similar to what we did with 4.2. Thanks for your insight and dedicated work.
