'Living Water' Pre-Alpha 4.2

#1 Post by ttuuxxx »

Hello Friends

Well I've been working on Puppy 4.2 for the past few months. Now its come to the point that I only have a small role left. A good portion of 4.2 update over 4.12 was contributed by myself. I know how it ticks one might say. Now it leads me back to the next Living Water release. :)

The first order of things to be done, is to make 4.2 even more stable and faster than the current model. Basically building a dependable responsive base model first.
4.2 has some outstanding new features that need to removed. But they don't want to listen to my suggestions so be it! The following list are things that will be removed.

-Fimenus script will be removed-The new fixmenu script takes around 3 times min to use. Why does it take so long? well because we have a new icon theme switch that changes the menu icons and the taskbar icons on JWM, plus its used with Pwidgets.
-JWM will be removed and IceWM will be the only window manager.
-Pwidgets will be removed, It sluggish, The desktop icons disappear when you move a open window over the icons, Its just pushing conky over the top.
-Pmedia will be removed Pmedia does not shutdown after you close it and continues running, it consumes too much system constant resources. Alsa Player will replace Pmedia 100% plus it has more features.:)
-PBurn and its very large dependencies will be removed
Xfburn will be included, It uses a different backend to Pburn, its not as fully equipt as Pburn, This will have to be looked at.

Next I would like some help with application Ideas, For this Project to work properly I need a few dedicated go getters:) In the past I've asked for new church related tv streams for ttuuxxxTV, Well I asked about 5 different times and only had 1 response, last time when I made ttuuxxxTv it took me a few days to sort out a nice rounded amount, it was minimal but still I received lots of great emails how people loved it so much. I could do this release solely on my own, but it will take a lot more time and plus I don't know everybody's wants and needs?

Keep in mind that this whole release could take a month or 2 before the final is released, But we have to start somewhere :) After the first final 'Living Water' release is made, Then will be the next task of a somewhat larger release, basically giving the first one a bit of bloat. After that release if people want a version as 'Church Pup' I could strip out some LIving water backgrounds, icons, make a new Icewm theme add open office, maybe a few more programs and we could call it 'ChurchPup4.2' Thats up to you guys to decide. But I did make a promise to bring out a new Living Water when 4.2 is done and well the time is now.

Thanks for your time
ttuuxxx

Well I placed enough post about project:) Just trying to gather some human resources :)
I'm just wondering what media player would people like?
Gxine/Mplayer/VLC I have VLC 8.6 down to 7.6MB but I was thinking of compiling the latest and very difficult 9 series, it takes around 40 packages to build VLC or maybe a week or so.

Best wishes! Hope that you continue to help improve 4.2, your enthusiam and expertise are still needed.

On applications, Consider including only the essential elements of KDE to make Bibletime work properly. Also, consider adding BibleDesktop as it uses the same Sword libraries and provides some additional features as well as a better capability to manage the book libraries. Also, include links to options that may be added such as Openoffice 3 sfs, KOffice sfs, Firefox 3 sfs, and Opera 10 sfs for those of us that prefer heavyweight alternatives.

Living Water is already a fine little application, but updating it to be 4.2 compatible will send it over the top.

I can't help with the coding, however, can help with your testing.

Thanks in advance for a badly needed derivative update.
Jim

Hi

A faster more stable 4.2 Living Water would be fantastic.
Even better for low ram / slow proc. laptops.

A nicely set up conky would be good.
(similar to 4.1.2 Light House)

Media Player? - you probably know better than most of us what's best.
Use that. (your smaller vlc?)

Your faster smaller Seamonkey would be an excellent browser.
(Composer is easy to use)
(we can use sfs Opera as a 2nd browser option)

And your latest smaller IceWm would also be good.
(needs a battery indicator in the tray)

Plus printing - that would be nice.

Look forward to seeing 4.2LW as and when.

Best regards - Ray

My second attempt at a reply -- now, let's see, what did i write b4???

OK _- this is cool! I've been waiting a LONG time for this.

FIRST -- thanks for your hard work on 4.2, LW, CP, and on the forums overall...

I voted for BibleTime (if the survey counted me, it didn't take my post) -- but i think GnomeSword and BibleTime are dead-even. I did NOT like Bible Desktop -- others do, but i like being able to mouse-over a word and see it in Strong's, have commentaries in sync with my reading, i want to be able to take notes on passages, etc. BibleTime looked better the seond time over compared to my first impression, but i much presfer GnomeSword or BibleTime. If the Gnome app is easier for you to configure than the K version (or vice-versa) -- save yourself a headache, i say!

TV??? I don't do much TV and movies so i didn't spend much time with it....

What about including FirePup?

Doing LW as a lightweight over the next coupla months and then thinking about doing ChurchPup -- hey that's great!!! Probably that's where i'd have a few thoughts more to chip in. I always watch this forum, tho....as long as the notifications don't slip through the cracks, as has happened.

As i mentioned elsewhere, i've been playing with LXDE and am quite impressed. First i'm impressed at how well it fit replacing my native KDE in Mepis (compared to IceWM, which i love but couldn't get to work smoothly). Secondly, the folks at LXDE seem to really know what "user-friendly" means. So, while IceWM works wonderfully when it comes pre-installed, i wonder if LXDE might be easier for newbies? What think ye?

I've tried lxde about 1yr back, and well it was nice, but I didn't find it stable, when you tried to change the preferences by clicking around the clock on the taskbar, it would crash.
During the 4.2 development I managed to build a icewm package that is around 670kb pet, it has icewm+8themes+pacellite clipboard manager+a new shutdown script I made and Hairywill added tabs to it:) + a new refresh menus button on the menu that saves you opening a command promt and typing 'refreshmenus' and then restarting icewm, now its just 1 click :) I think that will be the default WM this time, I'm really comfortable with icewm. Maybe next time lxde.
How do you feel about xfe window manager, I just compiled it and wow its real nice, it comes with themes like a kde, where it changes the icons to kde, also gnome and tango theme as well, I still have to add puppy's default icons but it really does look nice, plus you can have a jwm layout 1 window, or double screen, or even a triple screen, below is 2 images of it, you can also change the background colours. It did have 2 annoying popups, 'you are running as root' then you had to click 'ok' then when you went to close it, it said, 'do you really want to quit ?'daaaaa, lol so I altered the sources and removed both popups, so now it opens like rox, and closes like it, no-popups :)

LXDE might be stable now, not sure -- but i've ALWAYS liked Ice when it's already configured for me -- even the pupget of ice is a snap.

KFE - that's a new one for me! But if it really is lighter than Rox like their website claims, great. I didn't even know you could have desktop icons without rox-filer, look what you learn.

i'd love to use lxde but the panel crashes in puppy
so i'm stuck to xfce4 ( only in 4 mb made by gray, but can be even smaller)
openbox is also ver nice ans stable
icewm is a classic wm( but i've noticed bugs with icons when using QT4 apps)

XFE is a FILE manager?

Yes its a filemanager but not a desktop environment, so a icon pinboard would have to be used for the desktop icons. It uses the foxtool kit also, It might be a bit too big, probably around 2MB pet.
What bugs have you noticed with icewm and QT4 apps, not that we use many, the only one I think I would ever include with Living Water would be the musescore package I made, I always found fonts with qt apps in general never really look right.

the bug with icewm and qt4 apps is that instead of icon in the tray there's a black "hole2( i' ll post a screenshot later)
and look of qt apps can be adjusted via qtconfig and qt4 config( i use gtkstyle so have the same look as in gtk2)

ahhh but with icewm you can specify which icon will go in the tray, So maybe you had to add the icon for the tray, Its one of the icewm files in /usr/share/icewm/ folder.

Amarok is my fav player -- but yeah it's clunky. I ran across JuK and it has the same sorting features of Amarok and half the weight. So far, ik like it! IDK if JuK would be a consideration for LW or not. I just hate all the fussing around setting up playlists and such with other media apps, as good as they are.
There's Listen, too, which is also supposed to be lighter weight -- but i noticed a lot of Gnome dependencies....??

yes so think KDE or gtk2, lol. Remember Living water is to be small so all users can enjoy it :) around 125+/-MB then the other versions maybe.

I'm just about finished making kdelib base for bibletime, this one will be more stable than previous models, and a bit larger, But I think its the price we'll have to pay for stability. :) I already have kpdf up and running on it :) kpdf is only 265kb so I'll include that as a extra little bonus :) below is a screenshot of it, I guess Living Water 4.2 has officially moved from planning stage to building stage now :) Good news :)
I'm also still working on 4.2, but its a limited role now, Mainly fixes.
