The file uncompressor in Puppy WILL open .tar.gz archives, but will NOT open simple .gz compressed files.
Example:
http://www.gnu.org/software/gawk/manual/gawk.html.gz
Error message:
Invalid filename
This is an absolutely necessary core function, that needs to be fixed or replaced. Maybe this is an example of something so important that there should be two tools, to make sure that one can always get the job done?
guiTAR 0.1.4 GTK+ Kemal
(Compaq P-233MMX Puppy 1.0.6 HD 128MBram 28nov05)
guiTAR won't open simple .gz file

Yep, that's a bug.
I mentioned it awhile back to the maintainer of guiTAR, but his reply didn't show any interest in fixing it, at least not soon.
Anyway, Pup 1.0.7 is using XArchive, a brilliant program.
Mark Ulrich has released it as a DotPup, if you need it in a hurry.
See the Developer News page -- it will be well integrated in 1.0.7.

gzip/gunzip
gzip/gunzip from the command line may be a workaround

You are welcome to test Xarchive/PupZip in 1.0.7alpha -- see Developer News page:
