Thread ended... was User name password in CUPS?
HP Photosmart C4580 all-in-one wireless. hpijs supported. I am trying to set this printer up wirelessly.
For Device I see APPSocket/HP JetDirect and Internet Printing http & ipp. Which one do I use?
I have tried the ipp with http://localhost:631
Also AppSocket port 9100 using the Device URI socket:/hostname:9100.
I don't see my C4580 so selected C4380. C5100 is the next one up.
Asks for User name and password. Don't know what that is. I've worked days on this so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Unfortunately I still can't get my HP Photosmart C4580 set up correctly. I can't connect to this wireless printer.I have latest hplip and cups printing management. I am selecting HP Jetdirect. I've read everything I can find.

Re: hp wireless
Not that I'm aware of but....ndujoe1 wrote:Does the HP printer come configured with a set ip address?
On my XP desktop PC connected to the wireless printer via USB I see in control panel HP Photosmart C4500 series (61.81.635.0). Would that be the ip address? If so what are the steps for setup, starting with "Device" in CUPS. I assume it would start with AppSocket/HP JetDirect but the device URI for that asks for a "hostname".
If I select under "Device" Internet Printing Protocol (ipp) it...hmmm...requires "hostname" too. Don't know what that is because I'm not going through a printer router.
Thanks.

Does the above link indicate that this printer can not be used wirelessly with Puppy or any other distro?
I just removed the regular hplip and installed the hpliplite-1.8.12 successfully.

With many networkable printers you can determine their IP address by printing a test page. To configure the printer in CUPS, the standard setup would be:
APPSocket/HP JetDirect and
socket://the.printer.IP.address:9100
However, the link you give about does not sound hopeful.
Because this printer also has a USB port, I would recommend that you first get it working as a local printer. This will help you find the right driver.
Some wireless routers have a print server built in. If yours does, you could connect the printer through it.

Turned printer off/on. I connect USB. In CUPS under Device it automatically shows my correct printer. Under Make/Manufacture I select HP. Now I see 5 models listed. 3 are LaserJets so I rule them out. The remaining 2 are:
Deskjet Series 1.3 with supported languages including (en).
I select the other, HP New DeskJet Series CUPS v1.1(en). Have tried both though.
Make this my default printer.
Reboot.
Open Geany text editor and type some stuff. Will not print. Open Abiword, gives choice of printer so select my HP. Does not print.
I've had this printer working easily in a couple of other distros via USB so I'm really confused.
Appreciate all the help.
I took me a long time to get the wireless Internet working so I though this would be a snap.

This is how my C4580 is listed in CUPS:
HP_Photosmart_C4500_series_USB_1 (Default Printer)
"/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertohp failed"
Location: local printer
Printer Driver: HP Deskjet Series, 1.3
Device URI: usb://HP/Photosmart%20C4500%20series?serial=CN89QF11P1057K
I can't still can't get Puppy to print with USB. I gave up on wireless as it looks like it is not supported. One of the reasons I bought a HP printer was because of Linux support. I had an old Canon printer before and it worked.

Thanks for the help folks but I'm giving up on Puppy. About every 6 months I come back to it and work many hours just trying to get it configured but I just don't have any success.

For anyone in the future......
Here's what was going on, though I doubt the OP will see it in time to benefit from it. Had he snooped around in the forums he'd have learned that if you don't launch the CUPS wizard and answer "yes" to the "are you going to install a printer," the unused drivers are all compressed and can't be accessed. If you say "yes" it will uncompress the drivers so you have the full gamut of drivers available. Most HP printers I've looked at work right OOTB this way.
Hope that helps someone. It's an odd way that it's set up, and sometimes it makes people's lives unduly difficult.
