Follow-up: PM'd rarsa, got response, he said his first Tk 8.5.6 .PETs omitted the ttk directory, but the ones he's got up now include it:

Ok well the cups thing is a bit of pain, the last time we tried to fix it a total different model of cups was installed and it worked with the newer package supplied, maybe using some parts of the older one, So now its dead, I tried Patriot's version and it wanted me to reboot, and also use chmod etc, so I took apart my version, added barry's script and my kill print/restart script, added my .desktop file and icon and tried it and it worked: Patriot and I were both using the same Cups release so if this worked than the package below it should work. Please test it.
Just install the package,
fixmenus,
restart jwm/icewm
click menu/System/Manage Printing and you should be good to go.

I just downloaded the latest ntfs-3g source code and compiled it in Puppy 4.1.2. Tested it. Works fine. You'll find it here:

Also you'll find three other packages there. One is the latest version of Gftp (2.0.19). The other two are for adding squashfs-lzma to Puppy 4.1.2.
Barry used this for Puppy 2.17 but decided not to use it anymore because of the speed difference between squashfs-zlib and squashfs-lzma.
This uses a newer version of lzma, which is supposed to be faster, and a newer version of squashfs. (lzma457 and squashfs3.4) I'm using it right now. I used the new mksquashfs on the pup_412.sfs, it went from 92MB to 77MB using the default mksquashfs settings. The new modules will auto detect which kind of compression is used in your sfs file. I didn't re-squash the devx file or the kernel source file, so right now my pup_412.sfs is using lzma compression and the other two are zlib compression. I don't notice any speed difference, but my laptop is only 3-4 years old.

When you use the new mksquashfs you have some new options:

-lzmadic <dic_size> set the LZMA dictionary size to <dic_size>
Default value always follow the block size
Use this alone or AFTER -b option

-nolzma never try LZMA compression

Mksquashfs defaults to using lzma compression, if you don't want to use it, use the -nolzma switch. Mksquashfs is a lot slower with lzma compression, but you don't use it very often. You can get higher compression by changing the block size, but the higher the compression the slower the speed.
I compiled it against Barry's kernel source. It compiles as external modules, so it doesn't break the kernel build.

I don't know if you want to bother with this at this point. If you want to try it, download the new initrd.gz. It contains the new squashfs module and two other needed kernel modules as well as two lines added to the init script to load the modules. And download the squashfs3.4-lzma457 package and extracted it into your unsquashed sfs file. Then use the new mksquashfs to re-squash your sfs file just like you usually do:

# mksquashfs <input-file> <output-file>

Really quite easy if your using a frugal install. If this works well on modest hardware, it would gain you 15mb or so of compressed space, which is quite a bit. You could include the missing Xorg libs and other nice stuff. Most of the package size is do to replacing existing files.

EDIT: I just uploaded a kernel module (wl.ko.gz) for the Broadcom BCM4310 wifi card. Compiled for the 2.6.25.16.

I would rather Beaver over Leafpad due to the fact that beaver has Syntax Highlighting for C + C++, Html, perl, Java Script, Php, Bash, Java 2, Python. Plus I managed to get the package down to 80kb

Plus you can write your own plugins for beaver which could be fun for a lot of users, hmmm I would like to see a WYSIWYG plugin for beaver, any takers?? LOLOLOL

Desktop icons ARE "truthful" ... just not on YOUR machine!

A quick fix is to go to /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin and delete the lines referring to drives. Then restart X and all should be well.

PS. I now have the updated Tcl and Tk pets.

PPS. There will be an Alpha4, but it was fun to think we were moving on even if only for a short while.

2 fully puppy version minus cups printing.
That would make people very happy who are trying to fix cups. Its so much easier to work on system that doesn't include something like cups.
I could compile it, get it running, build a package, and have it tested, 100 %
Well thats kind of how I think It should work.
But there has been good reports with the latest version I posted yesterday.
Anyways something to think about.

Can each of you guys please make a single post listing the latest fixes for ALL of your contributions since Alpha3. Jeff (ttuuxxx) already has that on p1 of the thread, but there is so much stuff coming in that I'm losing things or picking up things later than I should.

I'm trying not to miss anything because it's all too valuable. I'm also trying not to forget anything or anyone!

On that note, Ed (Lobster) would you be kind enough to consolidate the list of contributions for Puppy 4.2 on the wiki, so when it comes to posting the release notes I have it already made? That would ensure I didn't miss anyone or their valuable input. Thanks, mate.

How about Alpha4 is simply built without CUPS? Then those who want it or need it can install the package as necessary. When it's all fixed it can then be added back in. It doesn't appear to work ATM, so leaving it out would be no biggee. Of course it would go back in for the beta releases.

Would it be impossible to revert to the exact same CUPS setup that works well for, e.g., me in Puppy 4.1.1, and only leave out the innovations until they work right? I'm not thrilled by the thought of a final alpha release with no printing!

Its a alpha release things are supose to not work ! How can we revert back to a 4.1.1 release when we weren't there when it worked, ? also that package is truely dated and needs to fixed, the main problem we were having is that, The older cups wasn't working out of the box, its been patched on top of patches, on top of patches, Its old and ugly and not so user friendly, The newer one has worked but with issues, and some of the issues is that we were applying the newer version overtop the older version, which it wasn't made to do and patching it along the way and blowing up the package size, we need a clean slate like WhoDo has kindly offered, better late then never, Its not really going to hurt anybody, not to have cups in 1 release. It might take a couple of days of testing, but the end result will be a more stable and smaller package of cups. I'll recompress the images, clean up formating etc and make it small as possible, without removing any functions.
