There may be some problems with Viao - seem to remember some
but you should try the latest Puppy

Puppy Raspup 8.2Final 8)

kscleverly,

If lobster says he remembers some issues, you might want to do a forum search on viao, but I agree that you should try the more recent puppy versions.

I have a 500MHz PIII with 128MB of RAM on my desk that I use for browsing, task managment, and a couple of games and it runs great on Puppy 4.0. Version 3.01 is very stable and popular too, especially for older hardware, and it will run most everything too.

Its easy enough to try different versions with LiveCDs, so just find one you like, then get Win98 off of there and use Puppy!

Good luck!

I think I was a little vague, the vaio does not automaticly recognise usb devices. I am therefor unable to use an external dvd. I have used a thumb drive which linux can see but windows can not. I am fairly sure that the bios would not be able to see the thumb drive so i do not think i can lauch linuxlive cd. I think this is why when i searched for a verson of linux i was pointed to verion 1.0.7 as it would load from inside win98. I am able to copy files on to the vaio via a belkin adapter. So i can download a newer version straight onto the vaio, but i am unsure of how to proced from there. If i download directly to a file on the vaio do i install from windows or from linux and will 1.0.7 regognise i am updating and simply overwright. Once linux is on I am hapy to drop windows and run purely linux.
Thank you

kscleverly, have a look at the Lin'n'win NewB project

I have an old laptop with dual boot Win98 and various Puppy versions. It is just a matter of choosing which one to use on boot up. You copy the puppy files onto the hard drive from Win98 so you can use your usb stick.
