About:
Learn more about version 01 here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=263003#263003

Size is 415 MB for the "Midi", that contains almost everything for most people.
A Mini-version (200 MB) was uploaded too, for ingredients see the next message. It has the most important programs, but less choices (not 4 webbrowsers, only 2)
A Microversion (92MB) allows to to build a custom system from scratch:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=268526#268526
A Maxi-Version (Open Office 3 in 5 languages, +Acrobat Reader, 682 MB) is available, too.
The Acrobat is german, I'll fix that soon.

It includes updated addons I had made for version 01. E.g. some games did not work, as they missed Tcl/Tk. That is included now.

Included:
wows unnamed puplet with fixes, so based on Xorg 7.4, Kernel 2.6.27.5, Gtk 2.14.
Many international translations.
Sylpheed 2.6.0 GPG
Opera 9.63
Gimp 2.6.4, with ufraw plugin
Sane/Xsane 0.996
Mplayer 1rc2
Dri/OpenGL
SDL
Gtk-themechooser
Cairo-dock
Deskicons002 (with weather widget)
Desktop-chooser (switch desktops without restarting X)
Automatic drivemount at startup
Several Gtkbasic programs like quickmount, Muppyfiler, editable dictionary
Glade 3.0.3
Tcl/Tk 8.5.3
Xaralx
ImageMagick 6.3.7
Enlightenment DR 17 (older, but stable alpha)
Wine 1.1.14 patched for games
Several games
Firefox 3.0.5
Flash 10,0,15,3
Icewm
Seamonkey 1.1.8 with composer
Google Earth 4.3 beta
Compiz fusion/Emerald
Nvidia 177 driver, with optional patch for GT8xxx
Ati Catalyst driver 8-12
Modified Xorgwizard
Python 2.5.2
Gdesklets
Gnumeric 1.8.2
Some Iconthemes
New backgrounds

Bugs:
- when you start first time, "chooselocale" is run.
It suggests to restart X.
You then will land again in the new xorgwizard.
Just install the same driver again, as at startup.
I don't know, why xorg.conf gets deleted at this point, must investigate that. Nothing critical, just a bit nasty.

- Please report more bugs you find.

Release Candidate 1 requires a small Servicepack:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=274802#274802

On old computers (256 MB), Release Candidate 1 needs some tweaks to avoid extreme slow performance:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=275026#275026

These issues are fixed in newer versions!

It is "backwards compatible" with version 01, so you can use the OpenOffice or KDE addon from that.
But avoid Muppyfiler/Icewm, they are outdated now.

Enjoy Very Happy

Mark

oh oh oh . . .
[Lobster faints with excitement]

Downloading now . . .
Looking forward to the maxi version
Yep I have 1GB of memory now - and that is NOT enough to run Vista comfortably (2GB needed - IGB just for OS)

Is this the biggest puplet yet?

Thanks Mark, Thanks Wow

Uploaded the "Mini", too (192 MB), it includes:
Many international translations.
Sylpheed 2.6.0 GPG
Opera 9.63
Gimp 2.6.4, with ufraw plugin
Sane/Xsane 0.996
Mplayer 1rc2

Enlightenment DR 17 (older, but stable alpha)
Flash 10,0,15,3
Icewm
Modified Xorgwizard
Some Iconthemes
New backgrounds

I did not yet create SFS files of the programs, that would upgrade the "mini" to "midi", so if you need one, let me know, so that I can set priorities.

Things I forgot: (planned for final)...........older Nvidia driver 9x

Could be critical - Xorg 7.4 is bad (cf Barry's Blog today) Could be the reason why Austrumi won't run on nV, Intel and old PCI cards? or Sabayon4 won't run on anything. There's a lot of chatter about Xorg7.4, but, although I know it's serious, I've no grasp for the detail or the fixes.

Sage,
I have a new computer with onboard Nvidia card. And a second card from Ati.
Both are not detected correctly by xorgwizard. I don't remember, if I had the same problem in Puppy 4.12 (xorg 7.3).

However I renamed xorgwizard, and run it from a new menu, that gives you the choice to select drivers by hand.
I attach a screenshot.

Like this, I can get both cards running.

4.1.2 runs on all my old junk (VESA if very old); my testbed uses an nV GeF2 MX400. The reason for this is that until last week, it responded either in VESA or Xorg or both to just about everything I threw at it. This week, perhaps now that Xorg 7.4 is being deployed?, I've run into three distros that won't run on it. 7.4 would seem to be the problem, not my kit. The GeF4 had become the de facto standard, but, as we all know, it's a moving target! More recent onboard video chipsets and PCI-E cards give less reliable results. Netbooks as well as laptops have only confused matters further.

yes, but on the other hand it is impressioning, if a hardwaredetection works.
The Ati 4850 is not supported yet by the free xorgdrivers. Using "vesa", I get a resolution of 1600x1200 - even if I write 1680x1050 to xorg.conf. This looks very unsharp, as the screen must be scaled down by the monitor (interpolation)
So xorg is a bad example.

But - with the catalyst driver, it runs perfect.
Resolution correctly detected, no tweaks required for compiz. Extremly snappy, even "hardcore" effects like fullscreen burning windows or games like Prey/Doom 3.
Desktopicons002 are handled better than with the nvidiacard (ok, it is some priceclasses lower). As they are new, they do not yet include like Conky dozends of tweaks to workaround incompatibilities in graficsdrivers, and you quickly see "garbage".
After all my bad experiences with former Ati drivers, I now am astonished *very* positively.

If xorg could reach such results of correct detection in 7.5, that would be great.
Until then, we definately need workarounds like my menu, to workaround the step backs concerning hardwaredetection.

Smile OK had a chance to play - using it now

- It is pretty overwhelming Smile
- Cairodock seems very stable - that is good - I remember in earlier versions it was nice but not worth the trouble - this is no trouble
- Tuxracer and Google Earth are crashing and I suspect the wrong nvidia driver. I have a GeForce7050PV/Geforce7020 built in which I think is covered by the 'Nvidia New drivers' option?
-XaraX the best vector drawing program ever working OK it seems
- Four browsers - Dillo, Opera, Firefox, Seamonkey

I would like to delete desktop icons - will the programs remain (does it just delete the desktop icons if you right click and delete?)
Any chance of squeezing 'SecondLife' into the OO version?

OK back to tweaking for me Smile

So far, so good. NYmini runs everything I tried just using startx. Bit slow in 384Mb.
Kernel panic with midi, so had to cannibalise a stick of 256 to add to the system. Works with more mem but you are correct - had to do 'force nv' to get Xorg running. Everything works here, too, except a few games. Funny, though, my (only) NIC (onboard) is detected as eth1 instead of eth0 - I've seen this happen on one of the majors, possibly Mandriva?
Shadows? What do you mean? I had the message about running in RAM persist, but it disappears behind apps. Too much to test at this stage. D/l-ing Maxi, but have run out of CD-RW so that's tomorrow's project. Right-click on rogue message boxes allows 'delete'.

added the Maxi, it includes in addition to the Midi: OpenOffice 3 (5 languages) and Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Acrobat is a mix of german and english installation files, I had no time yet to check it out.
In case it is german also for english users, I will fix it for the final.

Lob, yes, you can safely delete the desktop files.
Or just backup (move) them to another folder from /root/Desktop/ with the filemanager.

I have a onboard nvidia 7050 here. I think I just tried it with the "8000" driver out of curiosity.
Could play one round with Tuxracer.
Does it crash immedeatly?
Please attach here zipped:
/tmp/xerrs.log
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
Then I can compare them with mine tomorrow (tired now).

Yes, Cairo-dock has become really usable!
Wow had created a nice package of it, I just have put everything together.

Sage
Do you have shadows on the windows?
Deactivate them.
Here is an explanation, and atip for shadows on older hardware:

Thought so
Best to ask Smile

Well I used the Nvidia advanced or modern drivers and am using Compiz now - so working Smile

It did not even run - will try again after posting this
update OK it goes into a monitor option
- 'this input not supported - but I can hear the tuxracer music
So it would seem the script might be running at to high Mz for LCD?

Cool I am a Linux guru
typed at the console
Quote:
# zip lob xerrs.log Xorg.0.log

more by accident than design and it seemed to work

Xorg.0.log
(--) using VT number 4

This is a bug with Puppys Scripts in combinations with some graficsdrivers. I had encountered such problems, too, on my Laptop with Savage chip.
Puppy has just 3 virtual consoles.
You need to reboot, so that only 3 are used.
Once you have "4", weird things may happen.
You might encounter this, if you restart X. Then the 4th console (vt) is created.
I thought I could fix this already, but obviously not yet Confused
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=37345

I usually use the newer Ati card, but will keep the nvidia on for some days, to observe this issue, maybe I can reproduce it.

Did you create a savefile already?
I had the impression this just happens, if no savefile was created yet.
But I might be wrong.

I mean the shadows drawn around the window borders.
To draw them, the program "xcompmgr" is required (X Composite extension Manager).
It can massively slow down the speed on older computers.

I already check for CPU-speed , to decide automatically, if wbar or cairo-dock is launched at startup.
I maybe should also deactivate xcompmgr on computers with less than 1 Ghz.
Currently it is only deactivated on systems with less than 200 MB memory, but it is more a speed question.
This is decided in /etc/init.d/update_desktopchooser.

You can force to disable xcompmgr in "desktop options (the icon) - widgets and shadows".
I updated the screenshot, it displays that option.
