The CUPS 1.3.8 doesn't have an entry for USB printers....so, I used the following to install my HP LaserJet4Plus:

cups-install-v0.3.pup
after that, the easiest way to install a pdf printer is to use
cupspdf-0.3.pet

Not sure if these are still available for download..if not, I can put them up on a site.
