Eyecandy for puppy (idesk desktop manager) |
|
idesk is a icon manager similar to the puppy pinboard but with much more eyecandy stuff such as transparent icons and highlighting.
screenshots -> http://idesk.sourceforge.net/screens.html
Also take a look at the following topic http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=4002&highlight=
download idesk.pup from this page and
imlib2.pup from http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=2369&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=imlib2+pup
edit your /root/.xinitrc and comment out rox and add the following below it
TO START PROGRAMS LEFT - DOUBLE - CLICK
To add new icons or change options RIGHT -DOUBLE -CLICK
For more configuration options go to their website and read the documentation
After taking a closer look at the the screenshot i found that BROWSER is not spelt correctly. Correct this for your self this is a sort of HOMEWORK

The transparency on that picture is no real transparency.
It is the "Eterm" -konsole from enlightenment.
If you move it over another window, you will not see the window shining through, just the Desktop-background.
Fore real transparency (that is called "transluscency"), you will need the x.org -XServer.
If has a extension called XComposite and XRender, that must be activated by adding some lines to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Then you can set a window transparent with "transset 0.5" (0.1 -1). Your cursor becomes a cross then, and you can click on the window that shall become transparent.

Bombayrockers wrote me, that the KDrive-XServer that Puppy uses can be compiled, too, with this extension.
I might try to compile that this weekend, but I don't know in how far it will increase the size.

MU -thanks!
the transparency thing could be useful, in graphics especially. I sometimes have to trace things for example, to 'simplify' them - maps in particular are a hassle. Might be nice for animation too- like a light table for tweens.
but I really just want it 'cause it looks so cool

I setup idesk some time ago for my son that wanted to have IceWM in Fedora. Something to boot fast. Actually it's the desktop manager that's used most of the time (He 'owns' the desktop, I use the laptop, the other son uses whatever is available)
I haven't checked recently but the only thing that I did not like is that you cannot drag and drop to the desktop. To create the Icons you actually need to create the desktop files.
Is it still the case?
It is very small though and has never crashed

Yeah, that's still the case from what I found...
Any programmers here up to the challenge of making it possible to do that?

The transparent panel is PyPanel and it requires Python. The only working Python for puppy is available from Grafpup packages and is 15 mbs in size. It also requires Python X libs. The code for PyPanel is only 30 kbs
Now 15 mbs just for a panel is TOOO much.

After trying more than 12 hours to compile the KDrive with the XRender-Extensions I give up for this weekend.
I had to add some changes to the installerscript, to the configure-scripts, and to some makefiles.
This is really "CVS"
I finally was able to destroy my pup001, I will try to mount it from a working one and remove X11R6 so it uses the default kdrive.
Will continue trying somewhen the next days.
