Thanks, gray,

That oversight being dealt with, it upgrades my working configuration nicely. There's a later version of Thunar, and everything seems to work as before, except that Opera will not run at all. (If I use pfix=ram Opera 9.62 runs.)

Trying to run opera in terminal, I get this:
sh-3.00# opera
The Opera binary is not located at "/usr/lib/opera/9.60/opera".
Please modify the wrapper script at "/usr/bin/opera".
sh-3.00#

Hi all. I am in the process of switching from 4.1.1 frugal to the brilliant NOP, but have hit a problem. I seem unable to install previously downloaded dot.pup files. Previously in 4.1, I just clicked on these, and they autoinstalled, but in NOP, they open with archive manager. I hope its not too basic a question, but how do I overcome this?
ps. dotpuphandler is installed from the repos.
In the meantime, thanks for this brilliant Puppy.

NOP r1

#43 Post by gray »

shand : It is 4.10 based but with 4.1.1 fixes, so effectively 4.1.1

Henry: odd, that script should be top layer and so point to the correct place. You will probably have to edit the /usr/bin/opera script to point to 9.62 i.e OPERA_BINARYDIR=/usr/lib/opera/9.62

DaveS: Right click on a pup file and select Open with other application. Select use a custom command at the bottom of the popup gui and enter dotpuprox.sh as the application. Pup files have not been officially supported for a while in Puppy.

Thanks Gray. Sometimes there are odd .pups that I cannot get as .pets, and pup2pet sometimes does not work. I love this distro. The display on my laptop is light years better than the standard 4.1.1. Certainly the equivalent of Xubuntu, maybe better.

Compiz

#49 Post by gray »

MaxHeadroom :

After installing Nvidia driver, libwnk, fusion etc ...
Have you made sure the nvidia driver is working (you see the splash ?). If so then add the line compiz-manager & to the top of the .xinitrc file in /root. Then drop out of X (ctrl-alt-bkspc) and restart X (type xwin and enter). Compiz should then fire up. You may have to add a sleep after the compiz statement (I seem to need sleep 3).

When you installed the nvidia pet did you select the "fancy option" ? If not then you need to set up xorg for fancy graphics - see Wow's compiz thread.

Where can I find basic configuration files for things like Synaptic(?) mouse driver and menu settings please?
ps. can desktop icons be set to activate with a single click?
pps. Photobucket uploader works with NOP, but not with Puppy 4.1.1. Must be a Rox thing, wierd but good :-)

Running alsaconf show me an intel8x0 soundcard, mono, while for sGmixer its an Analog Devices AD1885...my rig it's a HP Workstation x1100.

Best regards

Just upgraded to R1, and it works just fine.

Turns out I couldn't use the Delta method since I didn't have the original iso. Ah well.

Also liked that you included some of my suggestions! Thanks! :)

Brilliant CD Remaster

#55 Post by DaveS »

I just made a re-master NOP DVD as I have it pretty much configured exactly how I want, and I notice the Dougal Puppy Re-Master is WAY more competent than the original. Totally brilliant thanks.

I am not entirely sure what to ask here, so forgive me. Is it possible to get the little network icon to display in the bar in NOP? Is it called 'Bliky'?

may be you could try modified blinky fo icewm
it's inside this pet
( you can just rename it to tgz and look inside :D )
but xfce has its own network indicator also

I got it working on my geforce 2 card with NOP 4.1

install xorg_full_dri.pet
install driver (select fancy option)
install python
install libwnck
install compizfusion package
edit /etc/profile commenting out the export argb visuals line with the # character

reboot (important otherwise emerald will crash with a segmentation fault)

mp /usr/bin/compiz-xfce

Code: Select all

!#/bin/sh
compiz-manager &
xfce4-session
chmod +x /usr/bin/compiz-xfce4

startx compiz-xfce4

that will give you a desktop equivalent to wNOP (too bad it isn't live :-) )
Taking Puppy Linux to the limit of perfection. meanwhile try "puppy pfix=duct_tape" kernel parem eater.

Thanks. I was getting lost trying to work out which file to download!

However whilst it provided high speed access to the iso link, that server is SLOW!!!!!!!!

Abiword details

#60 Post by Henry »

Edited-condensed:
Abiword is nearly everywhere in Gnome related distros, so this is about it, not Nop. These are problems with it that do not bother everyone, but should a serious writer.

Abiword (and OO) claim to "import" WordPerfect but drop formatting and graphics.

Help menu: 6 out of 7 items give no response. Yes, I know help, such as it is, is available on the web. (This may be a compilation choice.)

Tools menu: Babelfish, Free Translation, Gdict, Edit image in Gimp, Google search, URL dictionary, Wiki encyclopedia. All give no response. If I try "Install New Plugins," Abiword closes.

All grammar checkers are pretty much worthless, especially Abiword's.

It seems one should be able to close a document without quitting the program.

It seems one should be able to set a default file save format like .odt instead of it trying to make you to use .abw.

It still doesn't have "smart" quotes!

These are some I noticed; there are more at:
