Thanks Jay

I remember when the Next cube came out. Ridiculously expensive (I think they installed them in some universities)
The one big thing they had was Improv
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotus_Improv
which was better than existing spreadsheets
Did it catch on - eh no
Shame - I liked it.

Just in case you were wondering . . .AfterStep is a window manager for the Unix X Window System. Originally based on the look and feel of the NeXTStep interface,

I set up ground work for this
so you have a console with unicode and image support also
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 98&t=31254
console with unicode and image support
http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/big_bass/u ... e-9.05.pet
slackware rvxt-unicode wasnt compiled with the image option or AfterStep options so I compiled my own it has all the bells and whistles if you need it grab it from the above link
I am way to busy working on the slackware kernel pup
so I hope the pets I made will help out
puppyluvr nice desktop artwork I hope you have good luck with the WM
and you get some more puppy artist to jump on this too

Hello big_bass,
Your post was Jul 11...B4 I compiled it I searched "Afterstep" on the forum..and found squat..I coulda saved the terrible labor, OK , the 15 or 20 minutes of boredom, of compiling it.....Damn...
Afterstep looks promising, with a little tweaking...Its root window approach allows my X-toys to run directly..while ROX handles the file management..A lot like E-16 without the cool pagers and animated windows..and with ROX... But the menu setup needs work for Puppy....And 4x4 (16) desktops, I keep losing things..LOL Gotta tweak that down a bit...
I havnt tried it from unleashed yet, but it and FF301 get along great!!!

uRxvt-unicode with image support
http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/big_bass/u ... e-9.05.pet
if you want to change the background paper
hack this in bold text
/root/urxvt-unicode-paper-backgrounds/PaperBackground-01.jpg
just drop an image in that folder
and rename it PaperBackground-01.jpg
and you can have any background image in your console you want
without a lot of code edits

Looks very promising - and thanks to all for all for the work and links (lol, I have to save pages for help and that wiki page will come in very handy since my pups don't have a conn .. yet! Amazing how many simply assume a conn and leave out much needed help). domo obrigado

I've tried Afterstep now - thanks for the pet - and although it has some good effects I think it makes the windows more crowded and limits the size of the applications (Opera for instance) which can be used. The top menu bar, which occupies a lot of room, won't accept any overlap from any apps running below it.
Pity, because in many ways it comes close to being my ideal WM; for example, you can minimise applications down to icons on the desktop, which was one feature I liked in Windows 3.1.

Beauty bar none!
Hey! Thanks for making this available PuppyLover! Way to go! The way you and I seem to be addicted to desktops around here... LOL! What do we both have now? 15 each?
This really IS a beauty of a desktop, and like you'd brought out, it seems to have a lot in common with e16 in many ways, doesn't it? (Actually, where AfterStep came 1st, it would be the other way around I suppose? )
And yet... I find myself agreeing here with Col. Panic (Hi guy!) in that the pieces assembled together as a whole tend to take up too much screen space so that you're not left with much of a working environment. (I've noticed the same in the forked project WindowMaker as well it seems which I likewise have.)
I guess this is why I've come to prefer the minimal window managers the most as they're not quite so "in your face" all the time. I'm thinking here of PlayDayz's "Blackbox" WM, which I liked so much I installed kit n' kaboodle over onto my VL-5.9 Light distro, preferring it over Flux actually. Yet that could be because I had a brief stint with it as a desktop shell years ago on 98se.
However, when it comes to "beauty"? You've sure assembled a fabulous WM .pet here and I really hope those happening by will d/load it and give it a try! As always PuppyLover, you've done excellent work here!
I'm so very glad that we've got people of your calibre around here mate! Keep up the great work and experiments my Puppian Friend!
Amicalement/Cheers!

Hello,
@Colonel Panic,
Right click the ROX icon, (Home, Files, ect..)
Go to ROX-Filer/Options
Under "Pinboard" you will see "Iconified Windows"
Click there and tick the "Show Iconified Windows"
Also you can set where they are placed...
Also, everything Afterstep puts on the desktop is a "module" and can be turned on/off with a menu click, or placed elsewhere, like the "Winlist" module (the top taskbar) can be placed at bottom as well...
Hope this helps...
@Colonel Panic,
Any Puppy with ROX will do that:you can minimise applications down to icons on the desktop, which was one feature I liked in Windows 3.1.

Eyes-Only,
Yes, Afterstep makes for a pretty desktop, and is very "all inclusive" in that is even has its own backgrouds, icons, ect..
Yes, it is a real estate hog..I need to figure out how to configure it to place the modules, (Pager, Warf, ect) below active windows. and where I want them..And pare down the virtual desktops, as 16 is overkill..
I wanted to .Pet it so we can play with it and see what it can do..At 13mb, its not really "Puppy approved" as far as size, but could be shrunk down some still..( Docs, SRC, ect..)
But the current .Pet will work for experimentation..I think we should try as many new things on Puppy as we can, as we might find a jewel in the rockpile... (For example, why had no-one made an XScreensavers.pet till I did, as it seems an obvious choice!)
The modules can be turned off at will, recovering screen area, and the WM can be run without them, making it very minimalist..But the menus need converting for that to be very useful..I`ll play with it as I get time...Right now Im still working on an E-16/Wbar/Gdesklets Pup, but after some configuration and testing, I may make an Afterstep Puplet as well...
Thanks for trying it, I hope all enjoy it, and post any findings/suggestions here....

Colonel Panic,
Lots of settings there.....
In the same ROX-Filer Options menu, click Filer windows....ROX is a good desktop by and large, the only problem I find is that the file management windows resize apparently at random as you navigate through them.

Right click any Rox window and choose Options>Filer Windows and you will find the option to turn off automatic resizing of windows.Colonel Panic wrote:Thanks for the tip about ROX-Desktop, which I'm using now to create iconified windows.
