Netbook computer under $100 USD

#1 Post by namida12 »

Wow. Underpowered, but $98 is stunning!!!!!

Only basic surf the web, listen to www.sky.fm/, this may be a winner, maybe the disposable computer is almost upon us...

Think of the fashion implications, change the case colour every week?

If you can use puppy in this unit, it should run in far less memory than your Cell Phone requirements, surfing the www doing a great job accessing online e-mail, while watching a youtube video...

For a hundred USD, this is a perfect coffee cruiser... Only USB storage, perfect nothing gets lost if it becomes misplace or grows feet and walks away...

Find a free WiFi connection, use a camera, with ear buds and microphone and it does yahoo, or another messenger video phone call, or skype...
(Where is the Linux modder's tutorial & part list for a cheap Cam/Microphone)

I always wondered when, since they can sell a portable DVD player for less than a hundred, then a netbook should be priced similarly.

Rumored to be in Asia, and Europe already... No place to test drive one of these in the states, not Amazon, Fry's or Newegg -

I want one now...

new category

That's a welcome development, a new category of laptops, sub-$100.

Here is a laptop with ARM processor:
http://www.liliputing.com/2008/09/89-menq-easypc-makes-98-hivision-laptop-look-expensive.html
"$89 MenQ EasyPC makes $98 HiVision laptop look expensive"

But in terms of resemblance to a real PC, the HiVision laptop gets it.

Is this similar to the Elonex One being sold for £100 or the Maplin mini for £169/B-grade£119. There seems to be an intense argument raging about the cpu in these units. There's a whole long list of re-badge-rs for these on the InterWeb. The early Elonex seemed to contain a 300MHz x86 look-alike manufactured in China (where else!) and with a designation unheard of previously. The Maplin device is a 400MHz with a processor manufactured in Germany, mostly claimed to be MIPS - a few say ARM or x86. Maplin say that their machine cannot be upgraded, modified nor, importantly - re-installed. The Elonex One t however, which also runs at 400MHz has not been pinned down yet.
Whatever, it seems that ripoff Britain is back in business. £1=/=$1, at least, not yet. How much are the Chinese selling these for to distributors? Surely, they are the ones being ripped off - their products are worth a lot more than they are selling them for.
Either way, probably we should form a buying group, order a million units, pay BK to develop and install a special UniPup and sell them worldwide for US$99.

Ah, but it isn't quite like that, HW!
As you've read, I've been trying to get one One out of Elonex for nearly six months (no it still hasn't arrived). But you also read why I want it - to take it apart, of course. Should we buy a batch and convert some? You do the SW, I'll do the HW.

worth trying

:) Getting Sage this ready for action is something. And I agree.

Some useful links for getting started with a kernel are here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=34431

And I thought $350 for my Gateway ML6230 was a great deal! Well, it would have been if the 19-month-old little girl on my leg didn't think it needed a coffee enema. I got maybe 9 months out of the poor thing. It's parts for my wife's identical ML6230 now.

I thought a "disposable" laptop was like my buddy's. He paid $5 for an old Thinkpad A21 at a garage sale, it had been unused for years. He then spent $30 for an AC adapter, $40 for a used battery, and he's been running 2000 SP4 on it for 2 years with no problems. And when it dies he'll toss it my way and find something else to play with.

I imagine if one were so inclined, they could buy one of these $89 or $98 toys online somehow and have it shipped to the US for not too much hassle. I expect $199 netbooks on Black Friday and I'll probably buy at least one. I have seen them for as little as $250ish on sites like NewEgg, TigerDirect, and eBay. I can't imagine someone won't have a Black Friday deal on one of these hot little items.

Apart from nothing by Gateway being a 'great deal', you don't seem to have read/understood my previous advice. All modern electronics can be hosed down with clean tap water (school chemistry : clean water does NOT conduct electricity). PVC-type plastics are, of course, fully chlorinated so can be splooshed with dilute thin, chlorine bleach. The skill comes in drying it - sunshine and a judicious squirt of IPA. It's not rocket science to take the precautions of dealing with the Li-ion battery, DVD drive and FDD drive separately. Folks need to translate their basic school science into the products it provides for this technological age.

Yes, high school for me was a good fifteen years ago. I'm posting from the laptop now, but a handful of keys are still sticky. Only thing it needs now is for me to get one of those little white springboard things with the rubber whoziwhatsit for the V key. As it is now, I type a V by putting my finger where the V key used to be and smooshing the metal part with my finger to make it type. See, vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv v v v v V V V V V VVVVVVVVVVVV. Still works, just ain't pretty. This computer has a 65W power supply compared to the 200W on that Celeron box. Celeron box just went back to the kids and I'm using the laptop on my desk at the moment, praying it doesn't get splashed again. I'm thinking these GX260's, when they get here (estimated delivery tomorrow), will get Puppy on one, 2000SP4 on another, and XP Pro on the third. When the kids get used to using Puppy, I'll load it on the others as well.

The elonex onet and Maplin minibook are the same netbook. It is also sold under many different names, see here -

http://www.littlelinuxlaptop.com/

You cannot replace the os and it has a 4gig limit on drives/files.
Download a better Computer :)

Sorry, hf, but I know all that and 4Gb is overkill in this household.
Folks visiting this site don't use 'can't' - indeed, I'm relying on the smarter folks like HW to help out with the SW.
The toy is on its way today and screwdriver is poised. If you review the two relevant websites, you'll see that there's quite a lot of SW that can be added already and terminal access is the first call. I think a lot of folks expect far too much, though. For an extra couple of hundred quid extra you can get an Acer or Advent (I discounted the Asus early on as the keys fall off). However, these are heavier (the Elonex weighs 650g), use a lot more power (I^2R = get too hot on the underside) and really need the six cell battery making the package bulky and ~1.5kg, some versions reduced to a couple of hours use at best (Onet does 3-4hrs). The Elonex is also fully recyclable according to their claims.
Why not the HP with C7? Very poor reviews and outrageously priced.
Dell? Not available yet and they struggle with the WIntel cartel. They would probably prefer to use a Linux OS, which is what drives this entire market, but are still locked in with Beelzebub. XP on a sub-notebook? Are there really folks that dumb out there?
At the end of the day, it's what I ask all my clients "What do you want to do with it?" C-F, gaming, CAD, YourFace - get a luggable plastic box. But don't knock on my door when it breaks. For me, information/knowledge dissemination is what empowers us all - you can switch off the pictures and do everything a lot faster.....
As the old joke goes, Radio 4 is preferred by many because the pictures are better.

Packages that should work for kernel 2.4 are available here:
