PUPWEB.org = PuppyCentral?

#1 Post by kethd »

The Puppy Universe is expanding.
I have no objection to the proliferation of web sites. "Let a Thousand Flowers Bloom".
But it does pose a challenge, to keep the pieces linked together well enough to function effectively.

It seems to me that http://pupweb.org is the new Center of the PupVerse. (PuppyVerse? PupUniverse?) I suggest that as a standard EVERY page in the whole PupVerse have a little icon in a standardized place (upper left corner?) that takes you to the Center.
And we need an advanced-search function right there in the Center that does a very good job of searching conveniently and flexibly the whole known PupVerse. (Presumably Google-based.)
And we need a simple version of that to proliferate throughout the PupVerse. (Upper right corner?)

And we need to "strongly encourage" every webpage in the whole PupVerse to have the phrase "Puppy Linux" in the header or footer, so that ordinary folk using Google have the best chance of being able to find Puppy-related material, by including Puppy-Linux in their search terms.

Um, you could start things off by editing your post, adding an actual link to pupweb.org. :)

I guess I could put a search engine on the pupweb.org page
...is it possible to set one up that is constrained to search a given list of URLs only?

Useful

#4 Post by raffy »

Yes, that will be useful, though I haven't tried it yet. Puppian has done a search function sometime ago for the Wiki.

Kethd captured well the minimum common elements of the puppyweb pages.

The home button is easy - I guess people can choose from the few icons available now, and link to pupweb.org.

The non-programming way I can think of for achieving this centralization of search is "caching" the pages, that is, getting excerpts of the different pages and putting them in the CMS, with link to the actual page. Even individual authors can make an index like this.

My $0.02 :)

Google let's you choose to search within a site if I remember right. I don't know if it lets you choose multiple sites though.

http://tinyapps.org/ uses KSearch ... see here

Google used to have a template to make a search engine button ... something like

Code: Select all

  <form action="http://www.google.com/search" method=get>
  <input type="hidden" name="sitesearch" value="puppylinux.org">
  <input type=text name=q size=100>
  <input type=submit value="Search the Puppy website" name="submit">
  </form>
yes, it's here:
http://www.google.com/searchcode.html

i'm not sure if you can search multiple sites this way, with one click

puppian and others would know more about this than i do

simple search bar

#8 Post by kethd »

The "simple" search bar that we would like to proliferate throughout the PupVerse would just be a search box plus these tiny-print options: search this site, search the PupVerse, search the Web, and go to Advanced PupVerse Search.

The following search engine has been added to the wiki
http://swicki.eurekster.com/swickis/Puppy_Linux.htm

You can add it to your blog or web page by including this script

<script language="javascript" src="http://swicki.eurekster.com/sidebar?gro ... "></script>

It searches the following web sites as a priority:

http://www.puppylinux.org/
http://www.pupweb.org
http://puppylinux.abcde.biz/puppy/
http://www.puptrix.org/
http://grafpup.com/
http://www.murga.org/%7Epuppy/
http://freeforums.bizhat.com/?mforum=com
http://www.goosee.com/puppy/

Are search terms you feel should be added to the search cloud?

When you visit click on the up green if the site is relevant
down red if not relevant

- thus does the search engine improve . . .

www.puppylinux.com has the same content as www.goosee.com/puppy
and is hosted at servage.net.

Here is the structure on servage:

www.pupweb.org points to "/pupweb"
www.puppylinux.org points to "/puppylinux"
www.puppylinux.com points to "/pupweb/puppy"

Which means that a search of pupweb.org will also find everything in
puppylinux.com.

I don't know what you can do to avoid this duplication, unless you leave
puppylinux.com out of the search engine. Also leave out www.goosee.com/puppy.

If you setup the search engine to search puppylinux.com, not pupweb.org,
fine, except that currently there is a test directory /pupweb/test that will get
missed, probably more in the future.

Best solution (?):
Probably duplication of finds is inevitable. But, put puppylinux.com before
pupweb.org in the search list.

Forum needs to be moved up on the pupweb main page

#12 Post by kethd »

Great to see such speedy responses --
I think the Forum needs to be moved up on the pupweb main page -- definitely needs to be in the first screenful! As much as we might like the Wiki to be a core tool, I think the current reality is that most folk find the Forum more useful -- and it will always be easier to use/participate in.

I looked into the Google Free web search with site search and the FAQ says that you can just add semicolons to your list of domains to search multiple domains. I would have added it to the wiki page that has the HTML for searching the forum and wiki, but I couldn't agree to the Terms of Service (not authorized). Worth a look. Seems better than the option Lobster posted IMHO.

Advanced Search page

#14 Post by kethd »

The PupVerse Advanced Search page should have a list of the sites in the known Puppy Universe, with a standard check box before each. They would start out almost all checked. There would be "select all" and "select none" options at the top and bottom. Seems there should also be an easy special way to click on just one and choose "just search this one". (Should/could this all be integrated with the main pupweb.org page, or separate?)
Then there is the matter of how the results should be displayed. I guess the Google standard of best-two-per-site is a good kind of way to start. But maybe the user should be able to easily mod that, like "best-five-per-site"? And maybe the user would want an option not to have results sorted by site, but just straight-out ranked within the PupVerse as a whole?
