you can try to add this in the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.shutdown:

Code: Select all

eject
echo "hit a key to close the tray!" >/dev/console
read -n1 a
eject -t
I did not check it, but it might work.

Just gave a try last night Muppy-mini&live 008.4c in vbox.
cpu usages on both were not going under 55%
You might try the desktop environment switcher from the menu.
For example openbox with lxpanel might need less resources.

Also remove the muppy-deskletts from /root/autostart/ (move the script to "/off" to temporarily deactivate it).
Same with conky.

Muppys "eyecandy" is not too heavy, but on a very old computer or running in an emulator, you might want to deactivate it for less cpu-usage.

On my Pentium 700 it is ok, but I use the analogclock instead of the gdeskletts.
18% with Opera running.
If I close the clock, 15%.
These values are displayed by conky.

some info about the current status:
I currently post this from Muppy 0084c4 (not available yet).
It uses Kernel 2.6.27.
I can watch DVBT with it in gxine.
Puppys gxine crashes often in this system, so I replaced it with the one from slackware.
I can record the TV to disk with the gxine keypad.

OpenOffice is version 3 final, with US, DE, NL, FR, IT support.
But the spellcheck does not work, I must find out, why.
There was a sfs posted somewhere, where it shall work, but no details were posted about the modifications.

And the password is no longer visible when you use encrypted files.
I replaced losetup in initrd.gz with the one from Puppy 4.1 for this.

I'd also like to update Opera, flash, wine and minisys.

It will take some days to finish everything, then I can upload the updated isos at weekend maybe.

Mark, Thanks for the very quick reply. I was under the impression from an earlier reply to Lobster that 1GB Ram was necessary for the "big" (Live) version, but maybe I missed the point.
Lobster
the Live CD would load to Ram, if you had 1 GB of Ram.

The other reason I was interested in the Mini over the Live was because I figured it would boot faster on a day-to-day basis, since most of the stuff is on harddrive in sfs files. How do the boot times compare between Mini, Live and the BIG DVD edition, after the initial install and creation of the save, and installation of any sfs's?

I guess if I used the Live, then all I would need is the megapack.sfs. That would be even better if the boot time was acceptable for daily use, and if 512 is enough RAM, which apparently it is.

Since I don't really understand all of the implications of the different options, let's keep it simple: What would you ultimately suggest as the optimum setup in my case (daily CD/DVD bootup, reasonable boot time, good operating speed, access to the "full boat")?

Sorry if you are getting a lot of redundancy in our questions. It is difficult to keep track of everything said in this long thread, but I think I'm getting caught up now and I want to understand this system. I think you will be getting a lot of interest in it as a self-standing distro. It seems to have almost everything.

Thanks,

Ron

ron wrote:As a fairly new but avid Linux and Puppy user, I would like to make a few comments. I love Puppy for many reasons. I have been running Puppy 4 from a CD-only and I love this system of booting fast from a CD, loading to RAM with a save file on the existing partition. I have an aversion to partitioning/formatting my existing drive (XP on NTFS) and having to deal with a GRUB on bootup. Puppy's system allows a complete, fast, "dual boot" system without the need for all of that. So far, I don't see the need for even a frugal install, at least for me, and if and when the system crashes, it is so easy to replace with a single backed up file. I should mention this Forum also; these people are the greatest.
I had the same reaction as you in the beginning, until I discovered the Lin'N'Win method.
I am on frugal now and I don't have the burden to burn CD's/DVD's anymore. I more easily try out other puplets.

Also upgrading to a newer version is a matter of minutes, once the iso is downloaded.

When I do a version upgrade, I do backup the pup_save first.
Ron wrote:but installing new or updated software is difficult for an unsophisticated user unless there happens to be a .pet for what you want
Work is underway to improve that aspect.
In the mean time I use:
1 - a search facility.
2 - a search and install pet called petch.
Hope this is helpful.
Ron wrote:swap space, unless there is a great advantage
When running an earlier version of Muppy I ran into problems when using OOo.
I had to use a swap facility. I didn't make a swap partition, but I created a swap file. But I must say, I have only 256MB ram.
Now I use swap all the time, but mostly it isn't used when running puppy.

Success.

Linux.com has released an article about Muppy:
"Minisys Linux: Puppy on steroids"

http://www.linux.com/feature/150993

Many thanks, Dmitri!

I added more apps to my current testsystem:
wine 1.1.6
Opera 9.61
Flash 10 final
Gimp 2.6.1.

And I upgraded gxine with several patches on my own.
You can download it already as seperate pet:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=34733

I also compiled the madwifi driver for eeepc and Asus One in Kernel 2.6.27.
As it overwrites the standard drivers, I will include it as optional PET in the iso.
To get it for the current versions of Muppy, look at tempestous links here (Puppy 3, Kernel 2.6.21.7):
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=24496
Kernel 2.6.25.16 (Muppy 0084c3):

If you can make mini-Muppy (probably that's the more appropriate version?) 100% functional on the range of new sub-notebooks, you could have a new business proposition, Mark?! [I mean, direct import of Chinese clones then stick your MU moniker on the top.]

Thanks for your proposal, but this did not work. The eject never occurred but the next echo did.
I tried to look how Mandriva has done it but I did not find any appropriate bash script. Probably the function is in executive "shutdown" implemented so that I could not find it.

Mini 8.4c Wireless Wizard Glitch??

#269 Post by OnAir »

Tonight I downloaded the latest version mini 8.04c and booted my laptop off the CD. It was looking good until I tried the wireless wizard.
My wireless USB stick was correctly detected and the correct Ralink driver was used, Ralink RT73 802.11abg driver 1.0.3.6 CVS.

I scanned and found my network, it showed the name and Encryption 'On'
I selected WPA/TKIP and entered my network key, which is alphanumeric, 8 characters one of which is a number.
Then when I pressed 'use this profile' I got a message saying 'Shared key must be either alphanumeric between 8-63 characters or 64 characters hexadecimal'. Then I was<kicked back to the wizard start screen with the message 'wireline configuration cancelled!'. I am currently using Puppy 4.1 (not retro) which has the same wizrd but works perfectly.. I have never seen that message about the shared key characters before - Has muppy an extra check here which is maybe not set up properly (rejects 8 characters)??

please try the latest networkwizard:
Network-wizard-oct-16th.pet
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... &start=390
Muppys inbuilt network-wizard is outdated, and will be replaced with the new one in version 008.4d.

Here I am back talking to you thanks to Puppy 4.1
I tried the PET file and it was different but now I'm getting an error message about someting wrong with the WPA Supplicant.. too tired to try anymore, I'm going to bed... You should fix this in a complete release.

small white square

#273 Post by recycler »

Hi Mark, Puppy live has been running on a machine here since it was released. Really enjoying the look and responsiveness of it but having a problem that 3 times now (in the last couple of weeks) it will fail to load at the stage of starting up X. Instead of a desktop we have a small white square in the middle of the screen. Turning the computer off and trying again sometimes works. But just now after 3 goes I manually restored the backup Muppy had created to get it working again. Do you have any ideas of what I could do to prevent this happening and a possible cause? The machine is a Dell Dimension 2400 with 500mb of Ram and a 2.6 ghz processor. Muppy is the main operating system and gets daily use for email and web browsing.

Many thanks
Leon

The machine has run Puppy 4.0 without any problem. Any help or information would be much appreciated.

Hi Mark

I have a question about adding the add-ons. According to your website, I should "download an extension (with the suffix .sfs) to the main folder of the same hard disk.
If your save-file was created on your Windows drive C:\ , then save for example C:\addons-US_083.sfs."

I installed MuppyMini 08.4 on my hda1 using the puppy installer, frugal method, installed grub to the MBR, and copied the default grub "instructions" to the new menu1st file.

I have downloaded your games, office and addons to add to Mini for my ultimate distro. But, I can't figure out where to place the files. I don't quite understand which directory to place these addons. I have placed them in the /home directory, the /mnt/home and the /mnt/home/puppy084 folder, all with no success after rebooting each time. Where do I put these files to add them on?

Additionally I checksumed the files and they checked out. I downloaded the extensions for the mini only. I checked out the article on Linux.com and followed those directions, placing the files in /mnt/home and using the start>system>bootmanager program to choose which files to use when starting up. When I click on the choose button it comes back saying "sorry there are no sfs files to choose from", all the while I'm looking at my /mnt/home folder and the programs are sitting right there in front of me.

Another white box...

#278 Post by zgp152 »

With Muppy 0084.s, in low right corner, overlapping the digital clock, there is a white box, 1/3 the height of the digit. It is not a great problem. I added 6 spaces to panel definition. As a result the clock moved left.

The box is loaded after the wallpaper but before the icons.
I wonder whether it is a small error somewhere.

Alright! I was downloading the addons from your site Mark. But the extensions for Mini are 083.sfs and I'm using the latest 084. I read the review on Linux.com about Muppy and it linked to a different website that had the new 084.sfs addons. So I downloaded them to my /mnt/home and used the bootmanager configurator to easily add the addons. Works perfect! I gotta say MU, I have games and addons and this thing is a beast! Every imaginable thing. Well done.

I now have an ALARM saying that I have less than 100 megs left on my save file. I need to figure out how to make my save file bigger. I'll search and see if I can find it otherwise I may need help.
